No connection to the web - not Puppy related (solved)

Hello all and woof!

Am looking for comment about failure to connect Puppy Linux to internet (via our product called 'NBN' - national broadband network. Note: This posting has everything to do with connecting to the NBN using ethernet and nothing to do with Puppy Linux.

My hardware & system.
My PC -> Ethernet cable -> Netcomm Ethernet/Wireless modem -> Copper wire to exchange. -> NBN
I am running uPupBB32, but believe the OS has nothing to do with failure to connect.

NBN is the name given to the copper wire and optical cable system that runs internet around Australia. The setup above gave me access to the web (via NBN) for many years w/out a problem. Also, see below where I explain I have connection (now) via USB and my mobile phone.

Now to the problem: Last week a logical disconnection from the n/w occurred - i.e. nothing physical was moved.
Before I call the NBN service technician I want to get any info (using ping etc) about where the fault may be. Do I have a faulty modem, copper line or some other identifiable place?

The last time a technician called (years ago) to service loss of connection he floated a shonky story about the nature of the fault. When challenged he admitted he reset the fuse at the exchange and waived (what would have been a bogus) call-out fee. So any info that may avoid calling the tech will be appreciated.

PS You probably ask how I made this posting if I can't get connection to the NBN/Internet.
Answer: Using a USB cable and mobile handset with wireless I made a connection.
PPS: I have easy access to the junction box where the copper wire comes into my house.
I have a multi-meter.

Could be the modem - my NBN connection died last week & I was told modems are only good for about 3 years these days.
Near the end, they become very susceptible to power blips.
Mine was rebooting every 2 mins or so. Software reset failed. Last resort was a hard reset (push straightened paper clip
into reset pinhole for about 7 sec til reboot). That worked. Just need to know your settings first.

Could be a bad Ethernet cable.

Got a different cable you could try?

Also unplug cable and closely check both Ethernet connection ports for dirt, bent pins, loose connection of cable.

First thing I ever do with issues like this.
Power off whatever device is providing the service.
Wait 1 minute.
Power it back on.

Thanks for the observation that the problem may be the modem.
I wondered about the failure modes of a modem.
The response time at the moment suggests I have a temporary reprieve, not a complete solution.

I have a spare - I'll swap. However, at the moment I have a connection - as in times past.
Your observation about life of a modem made me think.
I will drill some ventilation holes in the cabinet to reduce the internal temperature.
Half a dozen 19mm holes top and bottom will reduce temperature by increasing air-flow.
In general, every 10 degrees (C) rise in temperature knocks significant life from an electronic item.

Hello. I keep the modem router on the floor, since the air flow from the window blows into the floor and, accordingly, it is cooler there. Yes, the dust also settles more on the floor, but it can be wiped off... dust cannot be completely defeated even on the table

By the way, how are the wires going to the house there? Underground or on poles?

The fibre optic cable goes to a large terminal box about 1km from my home. It's on the foot-path. Very obvious.
After that the signal travels along copper wire to another terminal box a few meters from my home.
The box is on the foot-path. The box fills with water when god sends rain. (Perhaps 40 or 50mm plus).
After that the copper cables go inside a plastic conduit to another terminal box in my kitchen.
Then to the modem where (magic) turns it into еthernet. Speed (I think) is about 10MiBits per second.

No cables in the air.

Hello all.

After some days w/out internet (and lodging a complaint) I have a final report.

I rang and spoke to 'technical service'.
Me: "I have a problem with connection to the internet."
Tech: "We checked. You internet is fine."
Me: In the terminal the ping command reports 100% losss.
Tech: I'll speak with technical. (then) yes - the is a problem.
Then: Do you want to book a tech? If the problem is on your premises (for example in your modem) the fee is $150.
Me: I'll wait until after the weekend.
(Over the weekend I 'connected' via mobile phone (and USB cable). Puppy did this easily.)
On Monday: the service was restored.

Conclusion: I doubt the ability of these fellows to run a complex system.

I have never had NBN.

I hotspot with Circle Life.
My first year was $28/month and now it is $38.00 for 100 gigs.
Some people hate them but I've been happy enough.

Before that I hotspotted with Aldi mobile for a year.

So no modems to worry about, and no idiots digging up the cables.
Before that I had TPG for over 20 years, Dialup, and various ADSL plans.
If you knew how to contact them at North Ryde or with their reps on Whirlpool Forum, you had better help.
