*SOLVED* Audio ads while visiting the Puppy forum in Chrome but not Firefox

Post by ozsouth »

Not sure if this is my setup, but only when visiting the Puppy Forum in Google Chrome, sometimes Audio Ads start playing, whilst I'm browsing this site.
I've turned off popups & notifications. Doesn't seem to happen with Firefox.

** EDIT: Solved - removing Simple Volume Booster Chrome extension fixed this **

@Flash - some are non-english; latest one was for an Australian bank (not mine).

What ads?????????????

This is a really bad sign!!! Please describe everything about these ads and where they are appearing.

There should be NO COMMERCIAL ADVERTISEMENT anywhere on these forums or wiki.

If the offers of whores and banks are local - in this case, Australian - then this is most likely the fault of a particular browser/computer (which picked up something), and not a specific site.

Different devices. Different approach.

This has happened a few times now - seems to be when I first go to the Puppy Forum after bootup or suspend. No visuals - just audio. Today, I recognised an ad from Commonwealth (Australian) bank. WOWWWW!!! some ads are playing right now!!!! Is in chrome. Only started this month. I'll see if I can get it to happen in Firefox - so far no.

Only the Puppy forum? Have they ever happened when you were on any other website?

Some versions of chrome allow audio to play in backgrounded browser tabs, especially if you have multiple youtube tabs open.

The correct behaviour (in my view) is that any tab not having current focus should "shut up" - but this behaviour seems unstable in Chrome.

(In my opinion just one of the deliberate "mistakes" that are typical of both Microsoft and Google).

Are you seeing this issue when only one tab is open?

Had an hour or so using Firefox, including logging into this forum. No problems. Went back to Chrome (just 1 tab open) - within a minute an audio ad played. Only on this forum. Now trying different pcs to see if a rogue issue on just one.

@ozsouth / @greengeek :-

I doubt it's the "fault" of either MyCrudSoft or Big Brother......well; not specifically, anyway. All of these Chromium-based browsers are using the same "engine", hence largely the same behaviour.

Some who build on top of the base Chromium pay more attention to how tab infrastructure works, or provide more options to control them than others do.

I'm guessing this is a purely "local" issue for you guys down there. I've never, EVER had anything similar happen here in the UK.

It's also entirely possible you're in the middle of one of Google's "trials", ATM. They periodically run trials of various upcoming features, to gauge user reaction.....and the geographical area is sometimes chosen for a reason, though more often it's selected at random. The annoying thing is that the user is not always aware this is happening; sometimes there will be toggle controls somewhere in 'Settings' to allow you to opt-in or opt-out of these trials, sometimes the user gets no say in the matter at all.

Look through Settings->Privacy & Security, and check for 'Privacy Sandbox'. If they're running any trials, it'll usually be inside here. No guarantees, mind!

Mike. ;)

*SOLVED* - Audio ads while visiting the Puppy forum in Chrome but not Firefox

Post by ozsouth »

I might be on to it - didn't happen with a similar box, so I checked differences - the offending machine had 'Simple Volume Booster' extension added to Chrome. I've removed it, cleared all caches/cookies, rebooted & so far no issue. Some update may have triggered it, as it has been installed for at least 3 months. Still don't know why only problematic on this forum though.
EDIT: a day later - seems chrome extension was the cause, so solved.
