How to create a bootable disk or usb?

What are the tried and tested free software that works on windows and linux to create a bootable dvd or usb

First of all to puppy forums and puppy itself.

I don't remember particularly, but I think I used this softaware- https://www.pendrivelinux.com/universal ... -as-1-2-3/. As I said, I am not very sure, so maybe it was rufus using which I got my puppy (fossapup64) files successfully copied to a pendrive, and the pendrive even booted.

Otherwise if you have a virtualization software on your windows system, then you can create a bootable disk/pendrive by booting into virtual puppy and choosing the option of installing puppy. There you could even format your partition to ext4(recommended)/ext3/ext2, which I personally feel better to be used than fat32/fat16 or ntfs.

For initially creating a bootable USB with as many iso's as you can fit on it (including Puppies) then Ventoy is the goto https://www.ventoy.net/en/index.html. You can prepare Ventoy on either a Windows or a Linux PC - just follow the instructions. Ventoy will also work with Legacy or UEFI BIOS settings. Having got Puppy up and running from the Ventoy USB stick then Puppy has its own programmes to prepare USB sticks and these can give you a Puppy USB stick which can give you a save folder and give you UEFI and Legacy capability.

DVD/CD
Haven't used these for many years. The Windows goto for Puppy users wishing to get started was https://www.imgburn.com/ which is still going. Puppy and other Linux Distros will have burning software as well. It is best to use a slow burn to avoid errors.

You can also use the dd command to write an iso to a USB stick. You can also just copy the iso contents to a USB stick and add a Puppy boot loader.

You may want to try Puppy on optical media first. If you only have Windows now, there is no need to install an .iso file burning program. Windows 7 and later have this tool built-in.

Download the .iso file of your chosen puppy. Insert the optical media. In windows file explorer, right click on the .iso file and choose "burn disc image".

As for the size, a CD should be sufficient (for most Puppy iso's).
