Wine app does not work in bionicpup64-8.0-uefi

Post by quasar »

Hi,

I made a complete Puppy install on a Flashdrive. It seems to be running quite well. I then installed Wine with Quickpet and also the 32bit compatibility sfs. I am trying to install a Window application (Metatrader 4) that will allow me to trade Forex. I am able to do that with my Ubuntu distro on my hard drive. I tried to use all Wine files to install the app, but every try fell dead.

The link to download the exe file is:
https://download.mql5.com/cdn/web/metaq ... n=download.

If anybody could give me a few hints for the app install on Puppy, it wil be higly appreciated.

Thanks and regards.

What specific Puppy Version?
We always need this information to help you!!!!
There are about 300 active versions of Puppy Linux.

Have you done a complete reboot and save so Wine is fully loaded and installed?

Have you run winecfg in a terminal or wine config from a menu entry?
This will install a few other programs needed.

In the GUI for wine config.
Select drives tab.
Do autodetect to get all drives identified.
Applications tab.
Is the correct version of Windows set for Wine to emulate?
Good to check settings in all other tabs for anything you think is needed.

In Rox File Manager
Click on eye icon to show hidden stuff.
Wine makes a hidden directory (.wine) in /root/
download the file into /root/.wine/drive_c/Program Files (x86)
Left click on file to run it.
(actually the file should run from any of the normal places in Puppies file system when Wine gets configured so it has /root/.wine/drive_c/users/root)
Stuff installed by a Windows installer program are usually putting stuff in /root/.wine/driive_c/Program Files and Program Files (x86)
Not going to get Puppy menu entries for Windows programs you install.
.
This is running in Fossapup64 9.5
Wine 5.5 (installed using Quickpet)
.

This is the main Wine topic for Puppy Linux
viewtopic.php?p=270#p270

May want to download and install the Wine extras pet.
https://archive.org/download/Puppy_Linu ... s-v2.1.pet
It makes a lot of useful menu->Utility entries to run different programs that are in Wine.
Note:
Some of these menu entries start programs that will be slow starting.
So it may not look like it is working for a few seconds.

@quasar :-

Hello, and Image to the 'kennels'.

WINE. Mmm.....

Much of what Bigpup has said is true. Now; when you say "Every try fell dead", what are you telling us? That you don't see a Menu entry for the app? Or that it failed to install?

As stated, WINE does not create Menu entries in Puppy. (It may in Ubuntu, but I haven't run that for over 5 years, so have no current experience with it.) You need to look in the hidden .wine directory in /root, ->drive_c->Program Files. If it HAS installed, there will be a directory for it. Inside that directory, you should then have an .exe file to fire it up.

This file can be dragged to the desktop to use as a launcher, or we can very easily help you to create a .desktop file to place in /usr/share/applications. After a re-boot, this will then give you a Menu entry.

First thing is to check whether or not you even have a hidden .wine directory! Did you run

Code: Select all

winecfg

.....to set WINE up after installing it? Without doing that, the /root/.wine "prefix" will not even exist.....

(EDIT:- Just tried installing this in Bionicpup64. I can't get beyond the first set-up page, because it wants proxy server details & all sorts of other network stuff; I presume you know what needs to go here. But the installer DOES run.)

My guess is that you haven't configured WINE correctly. Ubuntu makes a lot of this super-easy for you, and many of the background steps are run automatically. Pup's a wee bit more "hands-on". Let us know exact details of what you've done, please. Over to you...

Hi,

Thanks both of you for your answers. I am using the bionicpup64-8.0-uefi.iso version. I'm glad to know that the exe app is supposed to be working so I'll work it out.

My Wine Config menu doesn't give any result, nothing happens. Typing winecfg in a terminal gives this:
Image. It's hard for me to understand all of it, but I'll try your suggestions and see how it goes.

Here is an update.

I realized that I had two installed version of Wine, one that installed from Quickpet and another from the application install module. I figured that installing all available Wine files could solve the problem, but obviously it didn't. So I uninstalled everything and reinstalled Wine from Quickpet which has the wine64-3.15_v4.1 version. Now all Wine menus are working fine.

I configured Wine as suggested, as you can see in the image:
Image

I moved my broker's Metatrader application (fxglory4setup.exe) in the \root\drive_c\program Files (x86) directory, used the path in winecfg and clicked with the left button of my mouse on the exe file in Rox_filer, but nothing happened.

What am I missing?

Thanks in advance.

@quasar :-

Part of the problem may stem from the fact that you're using WINE64.

This doesn't refer to your using it in a 64-bit Linux distro, BTW. Most of us tend to 'load' the 32-bit_compat_libs.sfs package:-

http://distro.ibiblio.org/puppylinux/pe ... cpup64.sfs

.....type 'ldconfig' into a terminal before we do anything else (wait for the '#' prompt to return; it's then all set-up), and then use a 32-bit WINE package from version2013, who's been building Puppy WINE packages for several years.

WINE64 is problematic under Puppy, and often doesn't behave itself.

I am using 64bit Wine in Fossapup64 9.5 with the Fossapup64 32bit compatibility sfs loaded.
It runs for me.
So I do not think it is a 64bit Wine issue.

I do have Wine set to emulate Windows 7.
Could try to set wine config->Applications->Windows version to Windows 7.

That output you got when running winecfg looks totally wrong.

So, I do not think you got Wine installed correctly.

Bionicpup64 8.0 is installed how?
Full or frugal?
Installed on what device?
USB, hard drive, SD card, CD/DVD?
If frugal or live install on a USB or CD/DVD. Have you rebooted making a save, so now Bionicpup64 is running using the save?

Mm. I agree; it doesn't look at all how it should do. Having installed two different WINEs wouldn't have helped; it's almost a certainty files got left behind, which would create issues when another version was installed/loaded.....

How exactly did you uninstall everything?
Did you use Puppy Package Manager (PPM)->Uninstall????
Did you reboot just to make sure the uninstall completed.
Looked to see if there was no /root/.wine

Bionicpup64 8.0 has been around for some time and does have some bug fixes.
Run Quickpet->Info->Bionicpup updates
That will download and install all updates.
Reboot to make sure the changes are now being used.

To make you feel like a total, you know!
Tried your Windows exe program in my Bionicpup64 8.0
Wine installed using Quickpet.
Windows program runs for me.
Wine is emulating Windows 7.

Hang in there we will figure it out!

You are our eyes, so the more detailed the information the better!!

Guess we need to tell you this:
PPM can get stuff compiled for other operating systems. So not 100% perfect that it will also run in Puppy.
Most stuff does, but can have issues to work out.
Bionicpup64 8.0 PPM can get stuff from Ubuntu Bionic repositories.
Plus PPM does list just parts of programs. So sometimes hard to figure out if you are getting parts or the complete program package.
Welcome to Linux Software for Puppy Linux.

Quickpet is all stuff specifically compiled for Bionicpup64 8.0
Stuff in this forum is compiled for Puppy, but what version of Puppy is important.
Any software needs to be compiled for a specific OS and even version of that OS.
Some can work across a lot of different Puppy versions.
Others not so much.
Welcome to Linux software.

Really it is the same way in Windows or all OS's.
Try to run a program compiled for Windows 10 in Windows XP

Hi, I made almost all the suggestions kindly given:

- I typed Idconfig in a terminal but the command was not found.
- I installed the 32bit compatibility sfs.
- I proceeded to a Bionicpup update.
- When I uninstalled preceding version of Wine, I used the Puppy Package Manager (PPM). I then reinstalled Wine from Quickpet.
- My Puppy version on my USB Flashdrive is a full install.
- I put the exe file in the Program Files (x86) directory and specified the path in winecfg.
- I then rebooted while saving the session.

It is now working. I selected Windows 7 instead of Windows 10 in winecfg. I now have a proxy server problem, something I did not have with Ubuntu:
Image

but I think it is an issue I have to deal with my Forex broker. I will discuss the matter with them.

Many thanks for your answers.

Me again. I explained my problem to my broker and he told me that I had to disable my firewall, so I understand that the problem comes from my part. So I did disable the Firewall in the Network menu, but the problem remains. All suggestions are welcome.

I guess they gave you no information on what the firewall would be blocking???
So I did disable the Firewall in the Network menu
Maybe you did.

Look on the right side of the desktop tray.
Right click on the firewall icon.
Select turn firewall off.

To check.
The color of the icon should change.
Right click on it again.
Right click menu option should be changed to turn firewall on.

oot# wine /opel/Run.exe

Your wine binary was not upgraded correctly,
or you have an older one somewhere in your PATH.
Or maybe the wrong wineserver is still running?

After reading through this and ten years of using wine and troubleshooting complex Win applications on it like CAD, I would like to suggest that we simplify everything. To me right now there are far too many variables in the present system. Things added, things removed, etc. Who knows what is going on.

1.) Start up a fresh instance on a thumb drive, CD, or wherever of Puppy. On boot-up choose to run Puppy from ram.
2.) Set the date, time, and network access as usual.
3.) Use Quickpet to install Puppy update
4.) Move the 32 bit compatibility sfs to the base folder of your Puppy media
5.) Go to Boot manager in Puppy menu and load the 32 bit compat sfs for future bootups.
6.) Go to Puppy Package Manager and update the databases
7.) Install the Wine package you will use with this application. (if the app is 64 bit, choose 64 bit wine) preferably a Puppy Wine version
8.) Go to /root/.wine and drag the icon for drive_c onto your desktop. Now it's easy to access Program Files and your application.
10.) Before doing ANY testing, shut down puppy. You will be asked to save a frugal instance. Do that, and add the name "test1" to the savefile name. This will complete a frugal installation.
11.) Open a new instance of puppy in ram again. Find your test1xxx savefile and make a copy named test2xxxxxx. You now have two clean savefiles. Test2 is your working savefile. Test1 is a template for making new clean test savefiles.
12.) Close and open a new Puppy instance and choose Test2xxxx to load.
13.) Navigate through drive_c Program Files to your application's main program file and locate the .exe file that starts the program. Without starting it, right click Window>Terminal Here. That will open a console window in that directory.
14.) If your program is named greatstuff.exe, type into the terminal ./greatstuff.exe
15.) You'll see lots of messages, and eventually your program will open. Or not, and the prompt willl return. The last messages will usually point to the fatal error, and it often complains that a needed dependency is missing. That can usually be remedied. If your program does start up, then proceed here in this forum to troubleshoot. If you do want to try different wine configs (like alternate OS's) go ahead. You can always start fresh by deleting test2xxx savefile and making a new copy from test1xxxx.

Boof and DixieDog you're confusing the issue here, at least for me. Please open separate threads for your Wine issues.

Quasar, re your firewall, the proxy issue seems to be more specifically related to communications on port 443, according to the MT4 forum:
Thank you for reply, your answer was not clear enough right away.
I solved the issue by adding a firewall rule to allow mt4 installer connect outbound to port 443.

those who have similar issue, ensuring outbound connections are allowed temporary during the install process is the easiest way.
after installation is complete, add additional permanent firewall rule for "terminal.exe" to remote port 443.
this is only needed if your firewall blocks outbound connections by default.
