Constantly logged out. Why?

Post by Semme »

Comfortably running the latest 64b Slimjet.

What might one of our forum admins contribute this to?

Highly doubting the issue is on my end, what might an experienced forum member suggest?

Perhaps there's something I've overlooked?

If you mean you're constantly logged out of this forum, the forum automatically logs you out after 2 hours of no activity.

2 hrs would be good.

Regardless which browser I run it's more like ten minutes.

Hmm, perhaps ISP related?

That topic you provided a link to has several things to try.

Have you tried them?

Try delete cookies at the bottom of the forum page.
“Delete cookies” deletes the cookies created by phpBB which keep you authenticated and logged into the board. Cookies also provide functions such as read tracking if they have been enabled by a board administrator. If you are having login or logout problems, deleting board cookies may help.

Completely close and restart browser after you do this.

The things you do not tell us, are usually the clue to fixing the problem.

@ this point the combination of my hot spots "never turn off" option and leaving Pups "remember me" login choice unticked seems to be the ticket. I'll keep track of changes and update my findings as time goes by.

Thanks to those of you who took the time to offer suggestions.

Did you ever try this?

Try delete cookies link at the bottom of the forum page.

Shutdown and restart the browser.

The moderators of the forum would like to know if this has any affect on the issue?

While it's funny I've never noticed that button before, all my browsers are set to dump cookies on exit.

As per your request, I'm still on the bubble since my last login -- over ten minutes and counting.

35 minutes and still logged in.

Hour and a half later? Hot spot swapped over to a ten minute time out.

Tick, tock, tick tock...

7:06pm and I'm BOOTED!

Still -- Pretty good run.

Was having the same issue.
Could log in but was logged out immediately after clicking into any topics.
Tried various browsers and different devices, all the same.
Clearing cookies etc..did nothing.

Would be nice to know how it has been fixed if indeed it has been??

Cheers

@Tahrbaby
If you are still having a problem, start your own topic about it.

you are both talking about something a lot of others are not having issue with.

Each of you are totally different computers, Puppy OS, browser, internet service providers, etc..........

Strange to say the least. I have experienced this also on different combinations of operating systems and browser but never quite figured out why it happens.

The configuration settings for cookies and sessions seem correct.

What I suspect is the problem is an out of sync system clock. The session cookies are created with a hash created from the system clocks. If the clock is even slightly out of sync the session cookie will expire immediately.

Please try to re-sync your system clocks! Let's see if that helps.

While that didn't change for the better, I'm in agreement that our systems should be time synced.

Thinking my ISP is might be in the mix I'm now running out of a proxy. So far we're looking good.

@Semme Please let me know how it goes connecting via proxy. Will be interested in why your ISP may be the root cause. I can check the web server logs to see what there is.

It's a longshot, but I had a mix of http and https urls bookmarked for a while so whenever I would, for example, switch between my "Unread posts" bookmark and my "Debian Dog" bookmark it would seem like it was logging me out.

Like I said, a total longshot, but I thought I'd mention it.

While this may take longer than expected, thanks for everyone's feedback. Appreciated.

Truth is we have yet to understand what this screwy behavior might be attributed to.

Arbitrary?

Not!

There IS a bonafide reason.

One we WILL uncover!

I just read a post on the phpBB forum about this log out issue.

They tried a bunch of different things with some improved results and some not.

The big thing that seemed to help is what browser was being used.

Chome browser seemed to be having no problem, and staying logged on.

Final suggestion:
Look at the cookies in the browser check for the "expires on", or any setting like that.
Also check cookie configuration/settings, for a setting which limited cookie lifetime.

Yo, Dan.. just started to investigate your "longshot."

The forum seems to work fine without SSL.

And BP, I've been running Chromium these last few.

I'll keep you boys posted in the days ahead.

Thanks for your input.

I've checked the htaccess file for the forum and it looks to be in order. Perhaps one setting could experimented with but that will depend on how it goes for @Semme and if the forced logout continues in the latest tests

The clue is in the fact that others ARE having the same issues bigpup!

Only a few people and at no specific time or dates.

Unless people are just not able to inform the forum administrator.
Contact us link is at the bottom of the forum main page.
That provides an E-mail address to send an E-mail to.

If it was a lot of people at any specific time.
Than it most likely would be something wrong with the forum.

No one did anything to the forum and now you say it is working OK for you.

Is anything commonly used by all of these devices?
Same WIFI router?
Same internet provider?
Anything?

One thing to look at is what channel your WIFI router is set to use.

If someone in the area around your location, is using the same channel, on their WIFI router.
Your signals can interfere with each other.

You want to check what other WIFI signals, you can pick up in your area.
What channel they are using.
Try to set your WIFI router to use a channel not being used.
If not much choices, try a channel used not as much.

Change channel to lower wireless signal interference
https://oldforum.puppylinux.com/viewtop ... 9#p1014949

If you can use WIFI 5 GHz signal.
Use that instead of 2.4 GHz

24 non-overlapping channels.
Little WiFi congestion
Very little non-WiFi interference

Selecting the proper WiFi channel can significantly improve your WiFi coverage and performance. In the 2.4 GHz band, 1, 6, and 11 are the only non-overlapping channels. Selecting one or more of these channels is an important part of setting up your network correctly.

Each channel on the 2.4 GHz spectrum is 20 MHz wide. The channel centers are separated by 5 MHz, and the entire spectrum is only 100 MHz wide. This means the 11 channels have to squeeze into the 100 MHz available, and in the end, overlap.

However, there are three channels that don’t overlap: 1, 6 and 11. Co-channel interference is where devices take turns talking, so the more devices on one channel, the longer it takes for a device to talk since it has to wait for its turn.

All WIFI routers have a way to get into their settings.
Usually done in a browser, by using a specific address, to go to the WIFI routers setup options.
One of the settings will be what channel to use.

@bigpup

Thank you for your suggestions.

Unfortunately I live way out in the sticks and therefore don't have a landline available.
I use a TP link portable router with a SIM card for our internet. We get by very well considering the weak signal.
Also,we have no close neighbours so the changing channel idea is of little use although I had already tried this.
This router cannot be changed from 2.4GHZto 5GHZ either.

I have been logging into this forum without a problem for the last few days but today I notice its back to doing the same as it was before.Won't let me change page or do anything else without it logging me out.
I don't see this issue with any other websites that I use.

So the mystery continues.

After further testing.

Tried other browsers etc..
Rebooted router and now for the time being it stays logged into this forum..
So,as you say bigpup,it could very well be that this issue is down to me and my equipment only ;)

We get by very well considering the weak signal.

Well, a weak signal is never a good thing.

The old if nothing else, turn it off and back on, will maybe work! :D:

I have sure used that one many times. :D

This is the kind of stuff that keeps me from using my computer in a room with a window!

Next time it happens with this forum.

Quickly try to go to another location that requires logging in.
See what happens.

Maybe this will give us a clue to what may be happening.

Something about changing channel.

You may not have other WIFI signals in your area.

But there are things in your house that can affect specific channels.
The channels are a specific frequency.
Other electronic equipment, wall structure, etc.....
https://eyenetworks.no/en/10-things-tha ... i-signals/

Maybe using a different channel will have an affect on this.

It sure helped me, but my big issue was other WIFI signals using the same channel.

I am wondering now if the weak signal is somehow causing the router to disconnect from the device periodically causing a clock sync issue which is making the current session cookie invalid.

It is always going to be a session cookie problem when login/logout is concerned.

I am not hearing or seeing more reports on this issue so at least it is not wide spread.
