Forums won't "Remember me"...

Post by Grogster »

Hi all. :)

Whenever I sign in to this forum, I tick the "Remember me" check-box, but the forums won't.
How long does the forum remember for?
Is there a default time-out?

I often find that after about three hours, if I have not posted or read any other threads, I have to sign in again.
Despite having ticked Remember me.
Is that normal, or do I perhaps have a cookie problem at my end here?

I guess that’s a security thing? I have a program on my work computer that logs me out automatically if there is no input after 45 minutes.

HP G71 Wins10 64 bit, 2.2ghz 320gb hdd, Bionicpup64 on a WD 500gb portable HDD.

There is a set time period of no activity, that will log you off.
Not sure what rockedge set it for.

Rockedge, the forum administrator, had to do a complete redo of the forum to a new server, because of someone hacking the forum and completely breaking it.

I think right now, the remember me feature is turned off.

Really rockedge needs to answer this topic.

That FAQ is being updated to better answer specific question.
Right now use this:

The things you do not tell us, are usually the clue to fixing the problem.

@ BologneChe:

Quote from the link:

Why do I get logged off automatically?
If you do not check the Remember me box when you login, the board will only keep you logged in for a preset time. This prevents misuse of your account by anyone else. To stay logged in, check the Remember me box during login. This is not recommended if you access the board from a shared computer, e.g. library, internet cafe, university computer lab, etc. If you do not see this checkbox, it means a board administrator has disabled this feature.

OK, but I have done that(checked the Remember me box). Forums still do not remember me.

I don't care really.
It is just an annoyance.

@Grogster It sounds like a cookie problem. The Forum generates a session cookie to indicate your login status.

Most cases such as this either it is expiring or your browser settings are not accepting the session cookie.

This happens to me regularly in some installations with Puppylinux. I fairly regularly go through my profile and delete 'Remember Me' tokens, as it builds up to dozens. I set up a new one the other day, it remembered me for 2 boots, then this morning had to login again. I know it's a cookie issue, but not sure why. I checked my cookies and currently have 3 Puppylinux.com cookies. A couple of other forums I log into I don't have a similar issue. This is currently in a KLV Airedale Beta 14.

I have no expectation for anything to be done to correct this, it's just a minor annoyance.

@TerryH I found a small detail in the cookie settings that I have adjusted. Because the forums are sub domains the configuration should be slightly different. Please test and report if it's either
1 broken
2 fixed
3 same as it ever was

I'd say broken, because I couldn't login anymore with my default browser (firefox) had to use a portable browser with fresh profile to be able to login and post this message.

@fredx181 I have been fiddling with the settings so the forum's cookie's were working differently. I think it might be better now. I had to actually go into the database to change the setting since I no longer could login at all to switch the setting back.

Should be okay again. The portable chromium browsers seem to expire the session cookie regularly.

Same as it ever was, same as it ever was.... Nah, just got carried away then. It appears to be holding at present, 3 shutdowns or reboots and login has been remembered. So I would give a 2.

Thank you.

Hmm.

My Brave-portable quit even accepting a log-in AT ALL middle of this afternoon. Chrome, SlimJet, Ungoogled_Chromium and Opera all seem OK.

Cookies, you say? Where do we clear or re-set these?

Mike. :?

I had same issue. Had to clear cookies to login. I haven't tried Brave. But chrome allows you to navigate to website, click the padlock, and select cookies and them delete them. I think Brave might do this too.

@mikewalsh an easy method to delete the forum's cookie(s) exists at the bottom of the pages ->

@rockedge :-

Every other Chromium-based portable is behaving itself fine, Erik. It's only Brave.....and I suspect it's related to a hard power-off I had to perform earlier today.

I had a runaway script, that was duplicating files at an alarming rate of knots, and wasn't responding to attempts to shut it down. (In around 90 seconds, it had duplicated some 2,800 files totalling a little over 3 GB!)

So a hard 'power-off' it had to be.....and as luck would have it, Brave was open at the time. I rather think I've got a corrupted user-directory, so it'll be a case of delete it & start from scratch again.....

Bugger!

-----------------------------

EDIT:- @sfein1000 :-

A-ha! Thanks for the tip, mate. I'd forgotten you could do that. I've been using these Chromium-based browsers for almost 14 years by now.....& I've probably forgotten more about the darned things than most people have yet learnt.

That's fixed it. Posting from Brave ATM...

Cheers! :D

As I understand, these forum cookies are kept on the forum, for use by the forum.
They do not get placed on your computer.

I do wonder if cookie preference settings, in the browser, could affect how the browser would react to them being used.

Just wondering if this adjustment has been undone by the recent forum upgrade. The 'remember me' setting seems to have recently regressed, on my installs firefox is not remembering.

@TerryH All the settings are checked and are the same. I could recommend going down to the bottom of a forum page, and in the footer and using the Delete Cookies link to flush all of the board's cookies on your system. Then log in again

Hopefully that will fix it....otherwise let us know!
