Rainlender2 PIM 64-bit

geo_c's post, viewtopic.php?p=57884#p57884 brought rainlender to my attention.

See Wizard's instructions, viewtopic.php?p=57973#p57973 to eliminate screen-tearing under Bionicpup64 and Xenialpup64.*

I'm a big fan of Osmo. But, if I recall correctly, it didn't run OOTB under some recent 'Puppy-Variants': Weedoged? And there's been a problem with Osmo's Contacts Module in some recent Puppys. Moreover, there is no Windows version: so there can't be synchronization between a Puppy's version and a Windows version.

The free rainlender2 lite, on the other hand, has both Windows and Linux versions. It can be obtained here, https://www.rainlendar.net/.

As the screenshot indicates, it provides a desktop calendar, a ToDo List, an Event-view and Main-GUI. Each section can be independently moved to wherever on your desktop you want it to appear. The display of some can be turned off and, when wanted, turned back on.

I downloaded the generic version and used UExtract to unpack the tar.bz. In the extracted folder was a binary named rainlender2. Under Fossapup64 Right-Clicking>ListDD showed no missing dependencies; and Left-Clicking opened it OOTB.

Right-Clicking any of the displayed modules provides a pop-up of available options. Right-Clicking either the 'Main Module' or the Calendar brings up Exit, among other options.

I don't expect it to be difficult to create a menu entry or (thereafter) add it to /root/Startup.

I know that some 32-bit versions for Windows will run under Wine. Untested is the 2013 32-bit Linux version from here, https://download.cnet.com/Rainlendar-fo ... 96339.html Edit: Won't open. Missing a library which can't be found in currently searchable Repos. Note the date of publication. I even unsuccessfully tried to find it in Ubuntu's archive.

* Just a note if anyone wants to fully portablize it [with its config files in its own folder] and use that one folder with multiple puppys: wizard's instructions can be applied under Fossapup64 without ill effects.

D/l-ed the Generic Linux one. Runs in Bionic, opens three windows. But the graphics are garbled, barely legible. I went to the trouble of finding an icon if anyone would like, since one isn't provided.

I can confirm GMBudwrench's observation. The same applies to Xenialpup64. Rainlender2 would not open under Voidpup64. ldd indicates one library was missing.

Three different skins are built in and others can be installed. But the problem seems to be screen-tearing, and that under a couple different kernels.

Wiak, IIRC, except for BarryK's compile for EasyOS, the Contacts module of recent versions of Osmo --including the one from Void's repo-- was broken or entirely absent. If someone had to accept that absence, I figured Rainlender's ability to synchronize with Windows provided something to ease the pain. I guess not.

Might have to do some exploring of EssentialPIM. Bad idea. It's only free to try.

Treesheets.? Can import Osmos Contacts exported as a cvs. There's a Windows version but it seems to be old. Edit: Nope. Can import as a CVS, and the now treesheet's info is searchable, but not modifiable. Well, you can delete, edit, but not add contacts.

This was useful, because at one point I tried to upgrade to version 2.15 using the deb package and it didn't run. So this time I downloaded the 2.18 generic package which is truly portable. In fact I moved my old profile folder from /root/.config to my system config outside the pupsave and symlinked it. Now it's uniform across my fossapups and jackalpups. I've been using calcurse for a couple weeks now, but also just for the sake of it, exporting to ical format to be opened by Rainlendar in case I feel like looking at it in graphic view. It only takes a second to export in calcurse. Type x, i, and the directory/filename-that-rainlendar-uses and open up rainlendar. Best of both worlds, quick entry and editing in calcurse, nice graphical view in rainlendar. The only downside to that approach is calcurse doesn't import rainlendar's export, so I don't do any editing in rainlendar, but I don't actually want to!

Just loaded Rainlendar2 (Ubuntu) in bionic64 and got the tearing graphics. Did this:
Right click calendar>Options>Advanced>Transparency type = Copy

Looks good at that point.

Osmo contacts tab working fine for me in latest build, but Rainlenders looks good. I don't myself really use PIMs; too many programs, so tend to only use cherry tree for everything except reminders when I just use cron

I used infoCentral which is actually the best, but it only runs under Wine. I'll have to take another look at Cherry tree. I recall exploring it a year or so ago. But by now it's just a blur. Which, of course, is why I used InfoCentral for many years and you use Cherry Tree.

Cherrytree isn't a PIM per se of course, but can hold Contact info and todo lists of course. I've tried so many similar systems, but always come back to cherrytree. It is not perfect, and has its limitations (for example, has tables support, but these are very limited in functionality and I prefer to link within cherrytree to actual spreadsheets), but unlike the plethora of other apps, many of which are basically just markdown editors, you can cut and paste rich text and web page snippets into cherrytree very effectively (can't do that with markdown editors). It does strip a lot of the css, but some formatting remains and very useful - actually it can be handy that it strips out some webpage junk at time of pasting. Another limitation is that there is no android version and no cloud support worth talking about anyway (if only... that would be a dream; it does have SQLite file support so I wonder if a version couldn't be worked on to use MySQL on a server... I have no idea about such things however).

Also, as you know, you can insert images and links to webpages and files and more; I haven't used these facilities as much as I could (and maybe should and will...). Considering I promote its use so often I really should master its use personally since I believe I would really be surprised how powerful it really is. Note that "code blocks can be executed" in cherrytree. That might prove to be a hint/mechanism for simulating some further PIM-like functionality (you could even automate cron with this; for example to work like Pschedule or even open pschedule). I experimentally found a cherrytree 'trick'. Rather than use a code block I simply created a shell script with my own made up extension (I used .xte; .xterm might be better? Just don't use existing well-known mime type) and made that executable and with right-click from file manager arranged for that extension type to always be opened by Terminal Emulator. Then in Cherrytree I inserted a Link to that file (using Edit -> Insert -> Edit/Link). Then simply clicking that link in cherrytree causes it to immediately run in terminal editor without asking any questions to verify that's what I want... Alternative of using a 'Code Block' and F5 key to execute the code always seems to ask if I actually want to run the code... safer of course, but I prefer it just to run! (inside my shell script I just used command:exec xterm -hold -e cal, or use, exec xterm -e "cal;bash" - rubbish of course, and could do better... but you get the idea). Also can use construct such as: exec xterm -e "cal;read" and then Enter key closes the result, or simple app launching via say: exec appname
EDIT: Had a thought and just tried: can use Edit -> Insert -> Edit/LInk and choose a desktop file. That's even easier to create a list of apps on a page as app Launchers from cherrytree. The link (app launcher) doesn't need to be a text string; you can first insert an image and set its size to say 24x24 and then Edit that as a Link. My life could revolve even more around that app.

But no, it is not a Calendar app, so if you want that kind of thing then Rainlender2 or Osmo or similar may be what you want. I should move this post to a cherrytree thread, but I haven't looked for one yet.

Hi mike, I've successfully tested Rainlendar2 (Ubuntu download) in xenial64, bionic64, and fossa64. In xenial64 and bionic64 you have to set Transparency type = Copy
That clears up the graphics tearing.

Mention this since you might want to change the topic title "Rainlender2 PIM 64-bit FossaPup ONLY", which isn't accurate.
