Is there a way to suspend Puppy instead of shutting down?

Post by jm03 »

As per the heading...

Is there a way?

My usual practice on all my computers is to "suspend" to RAM, so that when I turn the computer back on I have all the programs and documents still up on my screen.

I really dislike having to shutdown Puppy Linux.

Is there a way to suspend it instead?

Kind Regards,

My "Puppy" suspends to ram perfectly. But long time ago, some Puppies I used found it difficult or impossilble to do it.

Sometimes it was due some misconfiguration, or the lacking of certain files, sometimes for incompatibilities with the equipment or some drivers.

Please, for starters, tell what Puppy you are using and the specs of the machine in which it runs and let's see

Also how Puppy is installed?
Full or frugal?
Installed on what storage device?
HDD, USB flash drive, SD card, CD/DVD?

If Puppy is installed on a USB flash drive and maybe a SD card.
Because of the tight controls on when the save changes are written to the save.
It is blocked from suspending, because it can block writes to the save.

The things you do not tell us, are usually the clue to fixing the problem.

Easy OS is not Puppy Linux.

Not a good idea to try stuff from Easy OS.

Even if it seems to work. It may not be working 100% correctly for Puppy.

I run several puppies. (frugal installation to a hard drive)

Generally speaking, the computer suspends to ram when the lid is closed.
When the lid is opened, the machine resumes.

Another method to get the machine to sleep is to use acpitool.
Install the acpitool package through the package manager.
Run the following command, and the computer will sleep with the lid open.
# acpitool -s

How to get the machine to resume depends on the manufacturer. For example, IBM/Lenovo ThinkPads will resume when [Fn] key is pressed.

In some cases, computers cannot suspend to ram due to attached devices.

Hi mate!

I am running Puppy "Tahr" on two machines:

1. Lenovo ThinkPad x220i

2. Samsung NC210 Netbook

Puppy is installed in "full" mode, taking up the whole hard drive.

Hi thinkpadfreak!

I installed acpitool via the Package Manager, and I'm now able to suspend to RAM via the "acpitool -s" command.

Thanks so much for this piece of advice!
