Re: VLC .pets- links
Some have extra optional dependencies added, others not so much. They should all just be install and go (if installed in matching Puppy version) including Qt GUI interface and they should be more compatible with Puppy (and smaller) than using PPM.
You should treat them as experimental packages though.

Re: VLC .pets- links
this is my first report on my attempt to build/obtain
a (somewhat) portable vlc media player
maybe a flatpack will work
or maybe the other formats snap appimage etc
maybe remaking a pet
or remaking a dcore sce file
or remaking the vlc player that works in tinycore 10
we have fredx firefox so we have a perfect specimen to reference
anyway maybe i'll learn something
wish me luck
i'll report back when i have something of possible interest

Re: VLC .pets- links
am trying oscar talks vlc.sfs files now one by one
i also made an sfs file from the vlc.sce file made by dcore stretch
until i figure out how to loop back an application
so that it uses its own folder
as in fredx firefox
sfs files are definitely the way to go
they are equivalent to tcz and sce file in tinycore and dcore
so far they all run but stop with errors
for the dcore sce i added the libs that were missing
until it requested a newer glibc
will keep trying and report my progress

Re: VLC .pets- links
into both puppy and tinycore with the cp -a command
this would make it easier to add and test missing dependencies
before you squashed it up
will look into that as well

Re: VLC .pets- links
I've no idea if this will be of any use to you.
I've just uploaded another one to the Drive directory Darren linked to in the first post. I cannot remember where I obtained this from; I don't recall if I downloaded it from somewhere else, or if it was a "by-product" of my experimenting with Fred's AppImage creation scripts (Fred's scripts seem to do this as part of the AppImage creation process).
It's a 64-bit RoxApp of VLC 2.2.8 "Weatherwax".....it's pretty big, but completely self-contained with absolutely everything needed to run. I use this regularly in jrb's lightweight spin on BK's original Quirky April 7.0.1, and it's as reliable as they come.

Stick it anywhere you like; click on it, and it just runs....
Mike.

This works well. A much needed VLC upgrade for an old Puppy like Precise. Plays VP9 and H265 videos. Good work.OscarTalks wrote: ↑Fri Aug 28, 2020 10:58 pm I have compiled an experimental build of VLC 2.2.8 from source in Precise Puppy.

Re: VLC .pets- links
Just come across another one in the "store-cupboard"!
This is a 32-bit build of 3.0.6 "Vetinari"; I believe it's one of watchdog's 'experimental' builds, though don't quote me on that.....a lot of Puppians were doing experimental builds when the 3-series came out. It has "chroot" in the file-name; I haven't got a clue how this was put together, but it fires straight up in DPup Stretch, and probably Xenialpup32 too, since these have the same vintage of glibc & deps. Should run in DPup Buster, I reckon, as well.....
It's just a single binary, though fires up when clicked on. Either statically-compiled, or turned into an AppImage with Fred's scripts. Couldn't tell you which. Seems to play absolutely everything, without complaints.
You can find it at my Google Drive:-

Hope that's of some use to some of you.
Mike.
Re: VLC .pets- links
thanks much for the vlc links will try them out
sorry i took so long to get back and thank you
but i didn't realize you had posted on this thread
because with all the subdivisions
things get kind of hidden if someone else posts
will make a point of checking even if i don't notice anything right off
anyway thanks again very much

Edit: reuploaded.
Re: VLC .pets- links
for what its worth
i am going to move this request/discussion to the corepup thread
since it has to do with putting a portable vlc into tinycore11
and falls under the wider topic of putting sfs and pets into corepup/tinycore
also that way i only have to keep an eye on one thread
thanks for all the help
i am still figuring things out ( mostly dependencies but also symlinking squashed vs unsquashed folders etc )
but as i said i will post all about that on the corepup thread

Re: VLC .pets- links
Lua is enabled
The only thing I had to add was libmatroska (this is included in the package - I used the official Ubuntu Fossa library).
Without this I found that some audio formats did not play in .mkv and .webm containers.
This is a later version than the one offered by Ubuntu and will not drag in unneeded dependency bloat.
Runs as root out of the box.
Some rox right-click associations added.
Experimental build uploaded for testing along with some others here:-

Re: VLC .pets- links
This is my experience running the @OscarTalks .sfs:
The h264 error is trying to play the original source file in .mp4.
The audio plays but the video doesn't.
The WMV2 & WMA2 errors are the source files converted to .wmv format in FFConvert. No audio or video.
I boot Tahr to run VLC but thought I'd give 32 Xenial a try.
It doesn't seem to make a difference running the larger or no-dependencies version.
The era of the Oscar/smokey version is close to Tahr's & that's what I'd prefer to run in Xenial perhaps with fewer dependencies in the .sfs.
UPDATE:
If you want Xenial install the .pet
https://disk.yandex.com/d/nxx9TP2i3HcXB5 vlc-2.2.8-i686-xenial.pet
or the .sfs I made from it: viewtopic.php?f=88&t=3964
They work.
