Questions
-- Muted system. Please help me get some sound
-- How do I get youtube via browser running with sound. Rght now video runs but there's no sound & from what I read pulseaudio is what browsers want to get them to talk . They won't get along with ALSA ( ?). Elsewhere I read ALSA is good enough and pulseaudio can be scrapped. Dont know what I should do to get this puppy talking.
-- deadbeef isnt working command line or front end ( deadbeef is deadbeef ) .
-- I installed sfs with addtional media utils including Audacity & none of em work.
How do I fix these

pulseaudio is tricky in Fossapup64. I will have time in an hour or so to give some help....

have you tried to use the ALSA setup to select your sound card?

Try this script from the old forum, https://oldforum.puppylinux.com/viewtop ... 9#p1025219 it worked for me, downloads the latest Firefox.

Remove the .gz to run the file in a terminal

ffportable-inst.gz
(1.85 KiB) Downloaded 77 times

.
Builds a Firefox that contains the files needed for sound.

Re: check the Auto-Mute-Mode box and set it to 'Disabled'

Post by geo_c »

I don't have any insight into the scripts that drive sound in puppy, but I do use a lot of browsers and change sound cards quite a bit, I also use a jack based system. In all of these instances I sometimes find browsers not accessing sound, most notably Palemoon and Librewolf (firefox) sometimes Ungoogled Chromium.

Usually I rectify the problem by closing the browser, running the multiple sound card wizard, choosing a sound card to test, making sure the test sound plays, Then choosing that card as the default.

Then I use the ALSA sound mixer in your screenshot above. I adjust all the levels being sure that PCM and speakers, headphones, etc are all at a reasonable volume and active.

Then I right click the speaker icon in retrovol, sometimes located in the tray, if not I run it from the menu and configure the retrovol to include all of the volume controls, and in particular I check the Auto-Mute-Mode box and set it to 'Disabled'. I noticed in ALSA you have it set to 'enabled.' That is often the issue.

I restart the browser after these settings have been tweaked and 99% of the time everything works as should.

If not, it is sometimes helpful to restart X.

In other words, I ignore the Pulse Audio aspect of it.

@sieger707 :-

PulseAudio, despite making some things easier - especially if you're used to it from other, 'mainstream' distros - has always been a complete PITA to get working correctly under Puppy. A lot of this is due to Puppy's 'running-as-root' model, which longtime Linux users just cannot get their heads around.......having had it drummed into them from day one that running anything as root is a cardinal sin!

Here in Puppyland, we run ALSA.....and where PulseAudio is expected, we make use of 'apulse' to satisfy the beast. What are you having problems with in particular?

What output d'you get from

Code: Select all

aplay -l

.....please?

Mike. ;)

@Geoffrey I just ran @fredx181's script from the oldforum and it built a working Firefox 99.0.1 with sound.

Replaced the Firefox I had which ran the CPU hot and sound wasn't working with the finished product. Sound works and CPU is nice and cool

Choosing the correct device to provide the sound, is most of the time, the issue.
When you get the correct one set, sound is usually no longer an issue.
Anything identified as analog is good to use.

Running the multiple sound card wizard.
Choosing the correct sound card to test.
Making sure the test sound plays.
Then choosing that card as the default.

Fossapup64 9.5
Quickpet ->info -> Fossapup updates
This provides a few fixes and updates for stuff.

Never had a problem with Pale Moon and sound in Fossapup64 9.5.
It does not need apulse or pulseaudio.

If you tried to install the full complete PulseAudio.
You probably broke what was already in Fossapup64, to provide just what is needed to get sound working, with browsers that have to have it, to provide sound.
apulse is in Fossapup64 and when used in the command to start a browser, it usually works to get sound working in that browser.
Examle:

Code: Select all

apulse firefox

to start Firefox.

The things you do not tell us, are usually the clue to fixing the problem.
When I was a kid, I wanted to be older.
This is not what I expected :o

Yea, the script works well, I'm still using XTahr with the graphics applications adrive I made, the only problem I have is that the old browser was next to useless.
The new Firefox crash's but I did keep the contained /extralibs and ff script, transferred them to firefox-86.0.1 that I downloaded, this seem stable enough for the use I need, the only problem I found was it crashed if the "Print" function was tried, it still try's to update firefox to the latest version but there is a fix for that too, in the "firefox" directory make a folder called "distribution", inside of that a file called "policies.json", with this.

Code: Select all

{
"policies":
   {
     "DisableAppUpdate": true
    }
}

This is the one to select in the multiple sound card wizard and set to default.

What is providing sound output?
Speakers, headset, speakers in a monitor, speakers in a laptop.... ???

Try this script from the old forum, https://oldforum.puppylinux.com/viewtop ... 9#p1025219 it worked for me, downloads the latest Firefox.

Remove the .gz to run the file in a terminal ffportable-inst.gz.
Builds a Firefox that contains the files needed for sound.

I ran this. What the sh does it find out Arch, Locale etc and d/l the latest ff and then un-tar the 2nd file into the 1st extract folder. So now this is the latest n greatest - albeit portable ff. I made it my default by copying that entire portable dir to /usr/lib/firefox & I am on 99 by default.

Code: Select all

root/Downloads # firefox -v
Mozilla Firefox 99.0.1
root/Downloads #

I think I may hav come close to a soln. Suspecting that I tinkered a file or 2 , should'nt have ...I booted to puppy without 2fs - RAM only option that used defaults. Over here if I choose the default sound card and pre-fix apulse firefox I can get some sound in youtube but its faint ( after all other mixer levels are at hightest ) ...so would it worth it if I copy the the only RAM settings of audio onto the sfs file ( after mounting it ) while I am in the only RAM ( ==No 2fs mode ) . What files should I be copying over so I can reset my audio defaults

I can get some sound in youtube but its faint

You can run the sound wizard.
I think you can enable a software equalizer.
Just enabling it might increase the sound volume.

On my machine, if I'm using headphones, if I set the speakers to zero and mute, the sound in the headphones is louder and fuller (more bass)

The configuration is in /etc/asound.conf

My asound.conf for HDMI is:

Code: Select all

defaults.pcm.card 0
defaults.pcm.device 3
defaults.ctl.card 0

My asound.conf for analog is:

Code: Select all

defaults.pcm.card 1
defaults.pcm.device 0
defaults.ctl.card 1

Your numbers may be different. aplay -l should tell you.

An application, like Firefox, will use the new configuration when it next runs.

I got rid of pulseaudio and the sound came back on. For the "woof test" ( sound card wizard) but youtube and others still not working. i noticed that even the former works only if in retrovol both loopback mixing and Auto-mute mode are both disabled. Still trying hopefully will get this soon

but youtube and others still not working

Have you tried starting Firefox from a console command?:

Code: Select all

apulse firefox

Sound volume low issue.
This may work.

From the menu:

Settings > Setup > ALSA sound Wizard > Sound Card Wizard 2 (click the tool icon)

Select your default sound card

Select Equaliser and Software volume control with 20dB preamp

... then click the mixer icon and push everything up to 100. (Have to use the arrow keys for this but it's pretty straightforward.)

The things you do not tell us, are usually the clue to fixing the problem.

My colleague's suggestion may help, but there's one other Retrovol adjustment that I've always found to work wonders for an apparently low audio output.

Right-click the volume icon->Config window->Tab 'Main'. For the first entry, 'Volume Scaling", use the drop-down to select 'Logarithmic' (you're probably on 'Linear', since this is pre-set by default).

If this still isn't enough for you, give 'Exponential' a try. DO be warned; this one goes VERY loud, and will quite possibly blow laptop speakers out! I basically go to around 40%, then the output is adjusted from the volume control on my powered speaker system.....which works for me. This is an elderly 40W RMS Goodman's system with separate sub-woofer; nearly 20 years old, but it's still plenty loud enough for my liking.

(All the other two 'Scaling' settings do, apparently, is to use different multiplication factors on the base output. 'Linear' is a direct 1:1, whereas 'Logarithmic' varies between 1:1 and around 5:1 the further up the scale you go. 'Exponential', I've never dared go all the way up with it, but it's more like between 10:1 and 15:1..!)

----------------------------------

I suspect your "issue" was self-created, almost entirely due to trying to treat Puppy exactly like you would a mainstream distro.....without checking with the community - BEFORE starting - to see what differences there are with Puppy operation. You're by no means the first to make this mistake, and I very much doubt you'll be the last..! :D

Mike. ;)

G'even folks
ALSA equalizer complained its not enabled. There's a hidden file which after It was created got Eq to work.
I now can finally get youtube .. on firefox. The problem was I ran apulse `ff` where $1 in the former was an alias for

Code: Select all

firefox -profile <path>

it fired up ff alright but without sound. Palemoon had sound but it crashed on flash earlier so I made ff my browser /usr/local/bin/defaultbrowser. I had to call ff without alias on that command.
So far all is well with sound. Now trying to wrap around BT. But that is for another one if at all I hit a wall.

yes speaker levels were Log
on a side note - my W-10 runs like crap. Is it possible to get a Virtual player onto puppy and use my existing install as the OS import rather than a fresh ISO. Wonder if that happens, can I install programs hitherto non existent on the physical install on my virtual OS ? I will open a new thread sos needed.
