Fonts and asceticism

Post by Grey »

The American company Monotype, which owns the rights to the fonts Times New Roman, Arial, Verdana, Tahoma and Helvetica blocked Russian users from accessing their font library on the site.

If you go to the page with VPN enabled, the directory becomes available. But nevertheless.

How can I live without Times New Roman and Arial now?!
Okay, I'll get over it. In this world, there are analogues that are visually similar to the original :)

In general, I need to look at a collection of fonts and pick up something beautiful or new.
Otherwise, I'll just become like some kind of ascetic... Sans, Monospace, Sans, Monospace... :)

The more the women/children/baby killers are cut-off from the rest of
humanity the better. Russian' are one step lower than ISIS.

Would be nice if the Puppy Forum didn't support them either.

Thank you for your kind words. Your opinion is very valuable to me  I hope you sent at least a kilogram of sweets and cookies to children in Donbass, when they were systematically killed during the previous 8 years.

All killers anywhere in the world should be cut off from the rest of humanity.
My wish is that it does not affect ordinary and decent people.

Good. But how will this stop the manifestation of violence in the World?
Well, let's say you live in a rich, happy country. On TV, the talk show hosts told you that if you isolate an undesirable country, everything will get better right away. And how will it get better? Have you tried isolating the United States during the events in Iraq, Libya, etc? Or "this is completely different"?

Did anyone try to find out the reasons at all? "We got bored... oh, an idea was born... let's attack a neighboring country today!?" This is not a bandit raid. This is a political crisis with military actions.

Oh, God. How anybody can look at those fonts & find them attractive, I will never know.

My long-standing personal favourites, in wide-spread use throughout the 'kennels', are these two:-

Exo 2

....and:-

Genos

Far nicer to look at. Unfortunately, due to Times New Roman being kinda the default M$ font for so many years, it's propelled it to being the most widely-used font on the planet.....

-----------------------------------------

*Observation:-*

Guys, let's not turn this into a "hate-fest", please. I know it's tempting to tar ALL Russians with the same brush, but from my observations, Grey seems a decent sort; it's not his fault he was born into & lives in an authoritarian state. While I agree with the sentiments, we shouldn't make this personal......especially given that with the Ukraine situation, feelings are running high at the moment.

I daresay most ordinary Russians are like the majority of folks world-wide; just wanting to be left alone to get on with their lives. Putin is in a class of his own, and cannot be compared to the population he rules over.

Yes, many people are used to this font. Recently, some documents were issued about grain and wheat, well, some of the management of agricultural enterprises in the area require this font in the document. They just got used to it, they say :)

@Grey
I'm sorry, you probably misunderstood me.
My intention was to soften the statements I read in the second post of this thread because I felt that they were too harsh (otherwise I would not have contributed to a similar discussion).

I do not mean isolating nations or countries, but specific dangerous individuals around the world. But this is practically impossible to do.

At this time, I feel a great bias in my country against everything Russian, and I am sad about that.
You know, I visited Russia years ago and met nice people, just like in other countries.

Here's an answer from the powers that are..........NO. I'm about to lock this one and remove the off-topic section altogether.

If anyone wants to test my resolve then do so and this section will be totally deleted faster than anyone can type the characters to ask why.

Here is the answer to any technical questions.......no and not possible.

Any questions concerning the violation of ethics by censorship that I might be accused of, the answer is probably well covered by all the other dictators operating world wide. So if one needs inspiration to find the answers you will not need to go far to find it or them. Pick the excuses that fit best for you.

The better bet is to not write on this board anything at all about the world order and war.

If one does have any issue at all about my actions there is always Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Tik Tok and all the other "social networks" to have an attitude on. Plenty of room for armchair soldiers and deep thinkers on those platforms. Ask Elon, and he'll tell ya....it's all about power isn't it?

As they say "Let sleeping dogs sleep".............. your welcome. :thumbup2:

I did not expect that the conversation would not be about fonts at all. There is no need to delete anything, let it be for history, so that years later we will remember what passions raged around.

But just in case, I need to ask. Can I lock up my topic on my own in the future? I've never done it and I don't know.

... and the 200,000 Russians partaking in levelling of Ukrainian cities, paedophilia, brutal raping/killing of women/children, intentionally targeting civilians, driving millions out of their own home/country. I think on that scale all of them should be tarnished with the same contributory brush Mike. Putin was a liar from the start, stating internationally that he wasn't going to invade Ukraine the day before they did, lies to his own so little wonder he also lies internationally. But Russians obviously support him, so drink from the same well.

But what goes around ... I very much suspect that Ukrainians henceforth will be most brutal to Russians following recent events.

A cheap trick. Your mistake is that you consider "the whole World" a certain number of countries that hate Russians. It's not the whole World.

And please be so kind, don't make statements about children and women that you haven't witnessed. Otherwise, it turns out that during the events you invented, you stood next to the participants and "held a candle" so that you could see better.

But if the FBI and the CIA come to the administrator and demand to "impose sanctions"... the Russians will understand his decision.
But such "snitches" as you, dear sir, are not loved anywhere.

If someone was my "enemy", wouldn't I want to keep them "close to the vest", as in nearby and in clear view as possible?

My entire life has been under the constant threat of nuclear conflict with the once Soviets and now Russians.

A total buzz kill and a heavy drag on the soul. all of it. There will be no victory.

The Hegelian dialectic is very tired. Unfortunately it's still effective.

I think banning 'enemies' from accessing fonts makes about as much sense as calling 'French Fries' by the name 'Freedom Fries,' because the French opposed us leveling Iraq.

But of much more critical importance is the fact that I must admit I don't even know how to add fonts in puppy. And that's a BIG PROBLEM. I sort of limp along with the 3 or 4 stock system fonts.

I'm sure it can't be that difficult in Fossapup. What I do first? Say I wanted to add and configure@mikewalsh's suggestion of Genos: https://www.fonts.com/font/typesetit/genos

Hah. Sanity, at last.....back to the original 'subject'.

It's quite simple. Download your font; extract it if necessary. You want to end up with a .ttf file. You then stick this in /usr/share/fonts/default/TTF. I couldn't find 'Genos' at my favourite site (it's relatively new, and part of a 'custom' collection I found somewhere unexpected a few months back!), but I normally get 'em from FontSquirrel.

You may need a restart of 'X' for it to show up, then Menu->Desktop->JWMDesk Manager. On the 'Desktop' tab, select 'Screen Font'; in the window that appears, click the button in the bottom left-hand corner, "View installed fonts". You can also make fonts larger throughout Puppy on this tab by setting the global font size across the other side. This normally comes as '90' by default, but you don't want to go any larger than '102'/'108' at most. Again, a restart of "X" helps, otherwise stuff only shows up piecemeal as & when you start apps.

Don't be afraid to download several & try 'em out. It's quite astonishing how you can transform the appearance of an entire OS simply by changing fonts. It's also not unusual for summat that looks great as a 'sample' to NOT seem so great when installed..... :?

-----------------------------------------------------------------

To get them to show on the desktop (pinboard), right-click in ROX->Options->Pinboard->Use custom font. For everywhere else, JWMDesk Manager again->GTK theme. There's an option somewhere down the bottom to select the font you want, then apply. Now re-start 'X'. (This also sets the font for inside ROX's windows).

If you want to change fonts in places like the Menu, or window title bars, etc, it takes a wee bit more doing. You have to edit /root/.jwm/jwmrc-theme; not hard, but it CAN take time and a fair bit of experimenting to get things exactly the way you want them.

Simple as that, mate. Any questions, feel free.

Mike. ;)

More a case of expressing condemnation rather than not. The Puppy forum in not taking action could be seen as not condemning and hence supporting the Russian atrocities, more so when there are clear and direct links included within the site/forum. Which could result in repeated until permanently being down attacks ... or worse (if black hats enter into the realm of targeting/destroying the individual that can lead to long term devastation - as in a decade+ long period of repeated despair arising out of identity theft).

Why's that Mike? I'm using 144 DPI !!!

One thing I've struggled with in the past - so many different places to change things. For console/framebuffer 1366x768 resolution I find Terminus 32 bold works well for my needs

i.png
i.png (63.44 KiB) Viewed 1310 times

(that's my real terminal font as in Ctrl-Alt-F2 (framebuffer image captured using fbgrab/fbcat).

I reflect similar larger font sizes inside Puppy/Fatdog, easier on the eyes. But that can blow out some things, such as IIRC running Puppy Apps Manager.

Also in .Xdefaults/.Xresources for other X apps, (xfontsel, xcalc ...etc.).

You also have to change things like seamonkey config files (under ~/.mozilla/... somewhere, UserChrome.css or something like that) to get its menu bar fonts larger/different. GTK2 choices, GTK3 choices, Qt choices ...etc. etc.

A beauty of frugal and boot/no save is that you can just save after making changes that you like, otherwise reboot into the exact same session as before, and if the changes aren't to your liking reboot/shutdown without saving - and the changes are gone.

I forget that safety sometimes when using a full install system such as Windows, and then get hit by a cold shiver upon remembering that any errors could be critical.

Frugal with the option to save or not, and you can boot, try things out, maybe totally screw things up, and a reboot has you back to how things were before.

Well if it's truly a question of network security, that's certainly a different matter, and definitely above my pay grade as a piece-meal, contractual musician type, computers being a simple work tool, as well as a hobby for me.

As to the point of lack-of-condemnation being the equivalent of showing support, I can't help but see that as a hallmark technique of Hegelian dialectic, in other words a 'forced choice' litmus test, forcing people, entire societies even, into a bi-polar argument. Certainly we can observe the many facets of that manipulation playing out in our modern world.

My grandfather was on the USS Helena in Pearl Harbor when it was bombed by the Japanese. His ship wasn't hit in that attack, but he fought the war until his ship was sunk by a Japanese sub in the Philippines in '43 I believe. He was rescued after 10 hours in the water. He never talked about the war. But the last time we saw him before he died my brother asked him, "Grandpa, did you kill anybody in the war?" to which he replied, "Boys, that is something that has weighed on me every day of my life, that those Japanese sailors had wives and children waiting for them at home just like me." And that's the only thing my grandfather ever said to us about the war. I took that to mean he didn't view them as his personal enemy to be condemned. He understood their humanity and their mutual predicament.

Do we have a choice once the powerful world forces divide us into camps? I haven't been conscripted yet, so I refuse to make enemies of those who haven't explicitly made me their enemy. I also hated high-school pep rallies, so that's just me. I have always been uncomfortable with group psychology. People are irrational in large numbers.

Well if it's truly a question of network security, that's certainly a different matter

I guess I'm swayed by personal experiences and dealings of being on the opposite side of dark-hats in the past. The Ukrainian IT army is around 400,000 and rising and noticeable initial amateurish attacks are beginning to become more sophisticated, as are Russian defences, tending to lead to alternative sites/systems being attacked. Inclined to lead from simple DDoS to other methods such as targeting individuals, and where some consider things like having obtained credit card payment details from perhaps domain registration hacks being used to register/pay for paedophilia content and flagging such access to the police. Having their targets door smashed in at 4am and being arrested is a beers/hit-tick celebration for them, but obviously devastating for the individual. Some take that to further extremes, to the extent of decades of identity theft problems such as debts/spending/driving offences etc. in their name. As some fake their own identity theft (run up debts and claim their identity had been stolen) courts can struggle with whether the defence are actually innocent or not. I know from 15/20 years ago that it could take a lot of time/effort to investigate - months/years, and that was with relatively small amounts of equipment (single laptops/desktops), with multiple devices, phone/laptop/gamestation/USB's/etc. and much larger amounts of data (TB instead of GB) forensics timescales are I suspect even longer.

Put yourself in DH mindset and finding targets more difficult and ... oh look, Puppy Forum doesn't have a flag waving saying it supports Ukraine, and has Russia links, let's add that to our target set and where one individual or a group pick that out as their target choice. First wave DDoS and the uplink cuts the site off, a hit/tick for them. Days later, oh look its back up again, DDoS doesn't work so they resort to alternative attacks/methods.

@rufwoof I never banned Americans from the site even with the United States being ACTIVELY INVOLVED as the main actor in 2 wars being fought simultaneously for trillions of $$$$ and then abandoned in the typical American way. That's 2 wars in my lifetime that the Americans have had to creep away by pulling out with helicopters off the roof of the embassy. Babies being handed over the wall...just like Vietnam.....Strange don't you think? What do those troops do in Africa by the way?

I don't recall ever having vote or say in any of these things

Then there is me not banning Americans from the Puppy Linux sites for the atrocities committed in secret in Central and South America. Nothing you can tell me will change that fact. I heard stories directly from guys who were deeply involved.

I'm not changing anything. It's really funny listening to Americans complain about righteousness.

"Freedom Fries"???!!! I should make that the title of this story. A target of attack because of a link?

@rufwoof you know as well as I do the Internet is bi-directional and what goes around comes around.
.......most Americans can't find Ukraine or Russia on a map.

Puppy Forum doesn't have a flag waving saying it supports Ukraine,

Come on, rufwoof, relax at last. Tell us better which fonts you prefer.

Just don't do it in the style of "I don't like vector fonts, but bitmap fonts... the letters of which depict dead Russians hanged, and the letter "T" is suitable for the crucifixion of Russians instead of Christ" ;)

Fossapup OS, Ryzen 5 3600 CPU, 64 GB RAM, GeForce GTX 1050 Ti 4 GB, Sound Blaster Audigy Rx with amplifier + Yamaha speakers for loud sound, USB Sound Blaster X-Fi Surround 5.1 Pro V3 + headphones for quiet sound.

Thanks, I understand what you mean a lot better. From what I have seen in the past decade, this kind of targeting could be coming from anywhere, Ukraine, Russia, or worse yet, the American FBI. The world in all of it's progress over the last century isn't any less brutal than it was hundreds of years ago. In fact, in many ways we are facing a new barbaric age driven by relentless technology.

Well, when it comes to fonts, I downloaded about a dozen, and just like when I began downloading GTK themes, it seems I still like the ones that make my computer look like a text-based console. I like my computers to look and act like what they are, dumb digital number crunchers!
