Has anyone got Steam player working in Fossapup64?

Post by xenial »

I notice that the steam player is available for download on fossapup64.
My 8 year old son is kind of interested in steam and i was wondering if anyone has successfully got this up and running in fossapup.?
I don't want to just dive in and install if there are any issues to be known.

Thanks.

Do understand that Steam is a program for accessing the Steam web site and navigating around on it.
Basically a repository of software games and ways to download and install them.
If you search for free Linux games.
There are some you can download and install.
Games shown to work in Steam OS+Linux are ones that should work in Puppy Linux.

For Fossapup64 9.5

First do the Fossapup update by using the program Quickpet (icon on desktop) -> Info -> Fossapup update

Reboot making sure to update the Fossapup save so now using the changes.

Install Steam offered in Quickpet.

When you first run Steam.
It will most likely do an update.
That seems to happen about every time you start Steam. They are constantly tweaking it.
Carefully do anything that is required for the Steam update to complete.
At times it may look like nothing is being done. It can be slow and the progress indicators may not change.
Make sure the Fossapup save gets updated with the changes.

For Puppy Linux.
I find the older less demanding and complicated games work best.
But several factors can determine how a game will work.
Computer hardware abilities, dependency software needed, game minimum requirements, etc......
Usually the game listing will provide info.

The things you do not tell us, are usually the clue to fixing the problem.
When I was a kid, I wanted to be older.
This is not what I expected :o

I am provided with games from Steam and GOG by local pirates. Therefore, I do not use an official client.

However, I think everything is fine there. The program is developed and maintained by Valve.
Besides, Phil probably tested it before putting it in Quickpet ;)

In general, one day it is necessary to implement three projects in Puppy (related to Steam):
1. Luxtorpeda.
2. Steam Tinker Launch.
3. GameHub (Tolya (author) from Simferopol, which is in the Crimea, now it is Russia. If you have prejudices, principles and other nonsense... then it's better not to use it :) )

I ran all three using Conty. But I prefer "manually".

Fossapup OS, Ryzen 5 3600 CPU, 64 GB RAM, GeForce GTX 1050 Ti 4 GB, Sound Blaster Audigy Rx with amplifier + Yamaha speakers for loud sound, USB Sound Blaster X-Fi Surround 5.1 Pro V3 + headphones for quiet sound.
