Drag and drop issues. Bad mouse?

Post by peppyy »

Recently I have been having an issue with drag and drop or highlighting an area.
When I drag a file sometimes it stops before I get it to the desired location. Like dragging a file from the folder for my camera to the MPV shortcut on the desktop.
When highlighting or selecting an area or group of files, it sometimes starts over in a different place. I find this especially when working on graphics, cropping, selecting etc.
I have tried 2 different mice and they both appear to do the same thing.

I am guessing it is a hardware issue of some sort. Any ideas?

hi @peppyy

it's usually sync issues if it's happening when dragging from a mounted camera/phone. mtp isn't the best and may work better if you let it settle for a bit

@666philb Even when dragging and dropping or simply highlighting a group of local files to move them or copy them to another directory it acts the same way.

It also (drops out) when highlighting text in most applications for copy and paste in a single window. Cropping images is getting unbearable.

@peppyy :-

Do you run the proprietary driver for your AMD graphics card?

I only ask because I had much the same problem when I first started using Fossapup64. Phil recommended that I install the Nvidia driver .pet he'd put together, because he admitted he'd had the devil's own job of getting the in-kernel 'nouveau' driver to play nice with the window compositor.

That 'tamed' the problem, all right. Although I turn picom off anyway, because I've never seen the need for the subtle effects that a window compositor gives.....most of which you have to look closely to notice, TBH.

I just wondered if the 'fglrx' Linux driver would have the same effect for AMD cards, that's all. Felt it may be worth a mention.

is this an MTP mounted drive? ie a camera or phone?

@666philb I access the drive via network. It is an ip camera and it has an sd card. I open that folder in a browser, (Palemoon) and drag and drop to whichever player I am using, usually MVP.

@mikewalsh The only thing I really use picom for is conky. I have it shut off for now to see if that helps.

It is odd that it only started happening recently. I will have a look for the nvidia pet.

EDIT: I need the Radeon driver correct?

@peppyy :-

Yup, that's right.

  • 'Nouveau' is the open-source variant for Nvidia.

  • 'Radeon' is the open-source variant for AMD.

I know that because my old rig was AMD-based; had an ATI Radeon XPress 200 chip built-in. Under normal circumstances I'd be using the Intel driver on this thing.....the Coffee Lake Pentium G5400 has a UHD610 GPU built on-die.....but I bought myself an Nvidia card (for reasons I won't go into), so the Nvidia driver it is, given that Puppy has its own native installer for Nvidia cards.

I was curious as to whether the 'radeon' module plays up under Fossa the way the 'nouveau' does. It sounds as if it may well be doing just the same thing...

It is odd that it only started happening recently.

Anything you did just before this problem started to happen?
Added some program.
Changed some settings.
Deleted something.
anything?

You say you use Pale Moon browser.
Is it the latest update?
One older update version, did have some strange issues, they quickly provided a newer version, to fix.

666philb should know, he developed Fossapup64 9.5
But should not hurt to make sure you did it.
Updated Fossapup64 using Quickpet->Info->Fossapup updates?
It does fix a few issues and makes Fossapup64 better.

How exactly is Fossapup64 9.5 installed? (OK frugal)
Installed on what type drive?
When dragging and dropping from one location to the other.
The locations are on what type drive and what formats?

What type computer?
Laptop or desktop?
How old is it?

Is the mouse wired or wireless?

I have fixed a lot of strange problems with computers by simply opening up the computer and looking around inside it.
Dirty inside with dust bunnies clogging up all kinds of things.
dirty anything can cause problems.
Corrosion on connections.
Loose connections.
Bulging or leaking capacitors.
Well, burned spots is a dead giveaway, that whatever, is bad.

The things you do not tell us, are usually the clue to fixing the problem.
When I was a kid, I wanted to be older.

@bigpup
Anything you did just before this problem started to happen?
The only thing I can think of is changing the cache size in the GIMP, however that was after the problem had started

Added some program.
Nothing since this started a week or two ago.

Changed some settings.
Shut picom off yesterday after it started getting worse.

Deleted something.
Deleted a bunch of .264 files from my documents that were used temporarily for movies I was making with openshot. That was also after this started

anything?
About a month or 6 weeks ago I changed my wireless card, went from an intel to a Qualcomm Atheros AR5418 Wireless Network Adapter [AR5008E 802.11(a)bgn] (PCI-Express)

You say you use Pale Moon browser.
Is it the latest update?
Always. I also use firefox for several sites that will not allow Palemoon, banking etc. and it is also always updated.

One older update version, did have some strange issues, they quickly provided a newer version, to fix.

666philb should know, he developed Fossapup64 9.5
666philb has replied above and is aware.

But should not hurt to make sure you did it.
Updated Fossapup64 using Quickpet->Info->Fossapup updates?
It does fix a few issues and makes Fossapup64 better.

Currently updated to 04/07/2021. I check about once a month.

How exactly is Fossapup64 9.5 installed? (OK frugal)
Installed on what type drive?
/dev/sda: solid state drive,128gb total. Ext4 partition of 118.2 GB on sda2 107.8gb free. reports Checksum: correct.

ATA device, with non-removable media

When dragging and dropping from one location to the other.
The locations are on what type drive and what formats? Even just highlighting text. Acts like a bad mouse button, have tried several.

Any and all, meaning that even within my home directory from one folder to another. Even when simply highlighting this text to copy into Geany I had issues. Acts like a bad mouse button, have tried several.

What type computer?

A mutt.
Desktop, specs in signature.

Laptop or desktop?
How old is it?
Depends on the parts. anywhere from 2002 to 2020

Is the mouse wired or wireless?

Here is an example of opening files with MPV when it works. I am dragging from the directory in palemoon and dropping onto the shortcut for MPV in this instance. Sometimes it drops the link part way and moves the icon on the desktop instead.

@bigpup The last thing I added was smplayer front end,
smplayer-21.8.0-qt5-x86_64.pet on Febuary 4th, about 3 weeks before this started. I have set it as my default player for several multimedia formats.

Hardware wise, I got a nice new lexar card reader RW500 usb3.0 about the same time. I only plug it in when I use it though.

@dogcat I do know that my keyboard sometimes duplicates the letter o on occasion. Of course I am not much of a typist. I set the repeat slower and that seems much better.

@rockedge I have tried a couple. I don't have any new ones though. Most are at least a couple years old. You did remind me though that I have a cordless mouse somewhere that is fairly new. I didn't like it because of the way it was shaped and it ate batteries but if I can find it I will give it a try. I think it was 10 bucks from a chain store and came with a keyboard that was too small and had no number pad but, I think it worked fine.

@peppyy what is that is a good question! I can't say I 've seen those. The other error you showed yes I have seen those, you can ignore that one.

These are USB mice? Same port for all the attempts with the different mice?

Just to see what happens.

Try booting not using the save.
See how drag and drop works running that way.

If OK now.

Something in the save is causing the problem.

Here is a list of bios updates to the motherboard you have.

Select see all downloads.

Could compare and see what bios version you are using right now.

The latest one says:

To add to what m'colleague has just given you, FYI, it IS possible to flash the BIOS/UEFI update stuff while in Puppy.

I did exactly this with the old Compaq rig when I was upgrading to a dual-core Athlon64 X2, back in 2015 - with assistance from another Puppian (whose name escapes me ATM!) - utilising the flashrom utility (available in the PPM). The Puppian in question spent a couple of years working in a computer repair shop when he was younger, and performed a LOT of these.

Apparently, flashrom has been around almost as long as the Linux eco-system, but it seems to be a well-hidden 'secret', since many Linux users still go into a Windows install to do this stuff.....partly because they don't know about it, but mostly because the Windows stuff is usually all GUI-based, and easy-to-follow. This is CLI-based, but pretty easy to use, for all that.

A very good resource for assistance with this is this article in the Arch Wiki:-

https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Flashi ... from_Linux

Just thought you might like to know!

@rockedge They are usb and I have tried different ports. There is something about that though. Last year I got a card reader, 5.25 Media Dashboard with 6 usb 2.0 and 2 usb 3.0 ports. I had an issue with the CF slot and went back to my old usb reader. Perhaps when the CF slot died it shorted something?

@mikewalsh Last time I checked the bios was up to date. I haven't used the fancy push a button to enter the bios while the operating system is running option. Probably just for winblows anyway. I just do it the old way.

@bigpup The guy that gave me the board last year is a big gammer and updated everything he could get his hands on. I didn't see anything newer there but thanks.

I suspect it might be. I also had a USB card reader die and it damaged the USB port on the PC.

Well after trying as many mice as I could find, In multiple usb ports, it appears I have found an older Dell mouse that works correctly as far as the left button goes. The right button is questionable. I will do more testing today after I repair a tire and get some dirt moved.
