Using FUZZY search to find and use things via the terminal

Post by Clarity »

I saw this: "Fuzzy Search How to" on Tom's website

Puppy has Pfind, but this offers a much faster method to find and use what you're looking for. This does NOT advocate to be a replacement for pFind, rather an additional terminal-level command entry in the PUP system to find things.

Enjoy it.

I really like fzf, it has enhanced my local search fu greatly. I use it with Fatdog64 and Raspberry Pie OS. At 2 MB it isn't exactly small for a command line utility but I think it's worth having.

A while ago I posted a gtkdialog script that uses fzf, see f4 - fuzzy file finder script for Fatdog64, FossaPup, FossaDog and Slacko64.

Fzf is in the Fatdog64 repo. If it's installed then findnrun, the application finder, will use fzf when fuzzy search is enabled in the options menu. In Fatdog64-812 the hotkey to start findnrun is Win+S.

It would be interesting if someone came up with a locate/fzf hybrid - using fzf to fuzzy search through the locate database. Perhaps it's already out there... who knows.

Thanks @step for sharing your experiences with us.

Yes, that combination of locate and fzf in the terminal subsystem makes finding stuff INSTANTANEOUS! Yes, after I had run a test in FATDOG, I had opened this thread.

Almost every PUP forum developer will LOVE this entry to the base system.

Thank you very much @Clarity !

Was not aware about this very helpfull command line tool till yet.

Installed it and love it. :thumbup2:

Need some time to get using it but it is very helpfull.

Tryed installed it also on a i686 machine but it failed sadly.
Will need spend some time to debug it and find a solution how to get install and run it on a i686 machine.
Maybe some dependecys are missing.
Looks like go missing libs.

Thanks @ARAN for your update.

If your 32bit is a PUP distro you might try posting in under USERS on the forum, OR, IF it is a WoofCE PUP, you could post under its heading in "Mainline Puppy Linux Distros" for any needed assistance or experiences.

Like you, I find this compelling.
