FIDO a lot of things not working HOW DO I FIX THIS?

Post by Mike3 »

So, I wanted to try to run puppy as user Fido, to have restricted access and added security.

But it seems a lot of things do not work when using puppy as Fido.

I could not get the firewall to start!

And also I couldn't easily switch back to root. Is there a way to easily switch between being in Fido mode and Root mode?

And then I couldn't run my web-browser from spot when in Fido user. Why?

I also can't see the drives and partitions of hard-drives and usb's, is there a way of seeing them as user Fido?

I checked Barry's blog and he writes: "fido is not quite mature, so not yet recommended to be used".

I think Fido is an excellent idea, but does it work?

Also It is possible to to go back to permanently being logged in as Root, from the login and security manager, but is there a way to switch back to Fido mode without reinstalling?

There is a similar warning in the os. I heed it and try to work with spot.

Fido never got completely finished.

It was more about seeing if it could be done, not actually getting it 100% working.

Bad thing is it actually got into a few Puppy versions.

Fossapup64 9.5 has Finn
Same idea as Fido.

Menu -> System -> Login and Security Manager -> Help
This tells you about Finn

However, not 100% sure Finn got fully 100% operational.

The things you do not tell us, are usually the clue to fixing the problem.

This is not what I expected :o

Makes sense.

If you're logged-in as user "Fido", you're not logged-in as user "spot", are you? "Fido" can't run "spot"s applications; just as "spot" can't touch anything in the "Fido" directory. That's the whole idea of user separation.

Try changing

Code: Select all

run-as-spot

to

Code: Select all

run-as-fido

.....instead. Will the browser NOW run?

------------------------------

Puppy was never built as a multi-user distro. It was always intended to be a single-user, "hobbyist" distro, designed to appeal to 'tinkerers' because of its basically "bomb-proof" nature.....along with ease of restoring previous settings when summat goes wrong.

In this latter respect, it excels.....and is why I will never, ever use anything else now.

Mike. ;)
