Booting from a USB or CD with a UEFI Boot Configuration

If your computer is any of these it will probably be using the UEFI boot configuration.

-2007 or newer
-came with MS Windows 8 or newer

During boot most computers will show a hotkey to press to enter the Bios/Setup. You can also check the internet for your make and model to find the hotkey.

-boot the computer
-when the hotkey screen is displayed start pressing the key repeatedly

The Bios/Setup should open, unfortunately, there is no "standard menu". Use the keyboard arrow keys, enter and any hotkeys shown on the screen to navigate and select items.

- disable Secure Boot

Newer computers will also show a "Boot Menu" hotkey during boot, you can use this to select the USB or CD during boot. Otherwise, look for an entry in Bios/Setup called "Boot options" and then "Boot order" or something similar. Set the USB or CD as first in the boot order.

-Save the settings and exit the Bios/Setup

If the computer is running MS Windows:
- boot Windows
- disable Fast Startup (Windows 8 or newer)
- do normal shutdown
- do not use hibernation
- reboot using the USB or CD

NOTE: booting from a CD is slow, you'll need to be patient

It is hard to make general statements about UEFI and Windows OS.

If the computer is running MS Windows:

Correction about fast startup.
Windows 8, 8.1 and 10
Windows 8 and up have a feature called 'Fast Startup'.

So, not all Windows OS versions have fast startup.
Any before Windows 8 will not have this.

As far as I know, some computers dont have access to BIOS.
1. create a UEFI bootable USB using Fatdog
2. boot the target computer
3. create GPT internal disk
4. install Fatdog

MacbookPro intel core 2 duo (2008)
Nvidia Geforce 9600GT.
Wifi Broadcom BCM4322.

Fatdog64, xenialpup64, scpup64, quickpup64, devuanpup64, fossapup64, fossadog64, voidpup64, jackalpup64, bionicpup32, slacko64, jesos64, weedog, klv, easyos.
All work as frugal multiboot.
The problem is some dont have video driver support (nomodeset required), no wifi or no sound etc.

Fatdog and xenial work ok sofar.
