Helping new users-Your First Boot

Post by wizard »

NOTE: This topic has been transferred to "Getting Started and System Requirements" at the top of the forum. You may still leave comments and suggestions here.

Here's the 4th topic in the Helping new users series

Thanks

********************************Draft2 Your First Boot*************************
This topic covers booting from either CD or USB.

If you are booting from a CD and your computer is any of these it will probably be using the MBR (legacy) boot configuration.

-made before 2007
-came with Windows XP or 7
-CPU is a single core

NOTE: booting from a CD is slow, you'll need to be patient

You will need to set the computer to boot from the CD first (boot priority). During boot most computers will show a hotkey to press to enter the Bios/Setup. You can also check the internet for your make and model to find the hotkey.
-boot the computer
-when the hotkey screen is displayed start pressing the key repeatedly

The Bios/Setup should open, unfortunately, there is no "standard menu". Use the keyboard arrow keys, enter and any hotkeys shown on the screen to navigate and select items. Look for an entry called "Boot options" and then "Boot order" or something similar. Set the CD as first in the boot order.

Some newer computers will also show a "Boot Menu" hotkey during boot, you can use this instead to
select the CD.

If the computer is running MS Windows:
- boot Windows
- do normal shutdown
- do not use hibernation
- reboot using the CD

If your computer is any of these it will probably be using the UEFI boot configuration.

-2007 or newer
-came with MS Windows 8 or newer

Boot into the Bios/Setup (see above)
- disable Secure Boot

If the computer is running MS Windows:
- boot Windows
- disable "fast startup"
- do normal shutdown
- do not use hibernation.
-reboot using your CD or USB

@rockedge

The "Your First Boot" (original title) topic is about both CD and USB booting for the first time. The title changed to "Booting from a CD with a Legacy Boot Configuration" makes it sound like it's only about CD's. Lots of computers out there that are legacy/MBR and USB bootable. I own about 15 :P

Also, some of the topics refer the user to other topics by name. Just give me a heads up when you think a change makes sense and I'll let you know what references need changing.

Let's add this as the first sentence in the topic to help clarify it's for both CD and USB booting:

This topic covers booting from either CD or USB.
