Can't login to Puppy Linux WIKI

Post by snoring_cat »

Hi all,

Does anyone know how to create/register a new login into https://wikka.puppylinux.com/HomePage? The Login/Register page only allows login not register. I emailed the owner, Micko01, a couple of days ago, but haven't gotten a reply.

@snoring_cat I don't think I even can login into the Wiki. We'll have to make access easier to achieve.

If we can't login to the Wiki, and no moderator/administrator is available, should we set up a new Wiki?

I will make some inquires as to what is going on with the Wiki since it's residing on our server and what is the point of that if it is unclear who exactly can access it? Doesn't sound good to me when the main admin's of the server are out of the loop, so I will make an effort now to regain control of it.

EDIT: these are the admins 'Micko01,RaffyM,lobster,JeyRey,coolpup,darkcity,Darry,zigbert,mrmicko'

I have been able to login to the wikka system as an administrator.

First problem is the End Of Life for the Wikka software has been reached:

So long, and thanks for all the fish

It is with a heavy heart that I am announcing the end-of-life for WikkaWiki. I have been an active developer with the project for 15 years, and am currently the last of the original devs. A lot has changed in the wiki landscape (and my own life) over the years, and TBH I have not kept up with the changes in the PHP language. In addition, it really doesn't make sense for me to continue offering new functionality for an ever-dwindling audience of WikkaWiki users. To that end, I will maintain ownership of the github repo and related issues database, but it's doubtful there will be any more development. Of course, in the spirit of F/OSS, anyone is free to fork the project and go off in their own direction.

Currently, Dario (one of our early visionaries) maintains ownership of the wikkawiki.org domain; I host the various websites. I will be shutting down the demo website, and will keep the www and docs websites alive for at least a few more months. During that time, I will capture the content of both sites and post the SQL tarballs (purged of user data) here for posterity.

I've truly enjoyed this journey, and I don't consider this the end, but the beginning of some new journey I've not yet realized. To those of you who have stuck with us, thank you so much! It makes the time spent on this project worth every second of effort put into it.

With the project now discontinued and so far I have not found a fork, there can be no upgrade of our Wikka system.

Now I am considering using the MediaWika system to replace our Wikka setup.
A conversion of the database must be performed, with the open question...does such a convertor tool exist?

Some research will need to be done to be able to decide how to proceed to preserve the Puppy Linux Wikka pages.

Just upgraded a woof-CE built Bionic64-CE's Hiawatha web server to use PHP7.4 so I can set up a test platform for running MediaWiki. It needs PHP7.3+ to operate and Bionic64 supplies PHP7.2+ so I went right to PHP7.4.

A symlink is needed in /usr/lib to get PHP7.4 to work,

Now to add the needed PHP7.4 modules and extensions.

Success! Setting up the web server to run PHP7.4.27 and I did a successful install of MediaWiki

The testing platform is on a Dell Optiplex 990 running Bionic64-CE (woof-CE built) with:

  • Web Server = Hiawatha v 10.10

  • PHP Version = v 7.4.27

  • Database = 10.1.44-MariaDB-0ubuntu0.18.04.1 - Ubuntu 18.04

  • phpMyAdmin = v 5.0.4

The next step involves finding a converter to adapt the Wikka database to the MediaWiki database. Once the data has gone through conversion and the tables work and MediaWiki runs well on this local machine instance, I will install a copy on the puppylinux.com host server and eventually switch over.

This will mean the need for a team that deals with the administration of the new Puppy Linux Wiki.

While this is the goal, it will take some time. The faster we find a conversion utility or make one..........

Calling all logo artists!

We need a Logo for the puppylinux.com MediaWiki site. We could use the standard or something more custom. Below in the screen shot is the location of the logo on the upper left hand side of the page.

I'll probably try to do something later. After the situation in Kazakhstan stabilizes (I have relatives there, and the news is alarming).

Different devices. Different approach.

I'm not sure how relevant this would be, or the comfort level your team has when it comes to Emacs, but to give you a comparison, the Emacs Org Mode team basically uses a set of '.org' files to create their wiki which untangles easily via org-babel to an HTML wiki page:
https://orgmode.org/worg/worg-about.html

Just putting this idea out there since Emacs will always be around :)

Should the logo be vector (.svg) or bitmap (.png)? If the latter, then with what resolution?

@Grey has the situation gotten any better?

I would like both .png and .svg! I will need to start the machine into the Bionic65 to run the server to check the exact size.

MwImporter is a HTML Pages Converter to MediaWiki. If you save all pages from old wiki using wget maybe it helps in conversion?

Here's what I found https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:F ... _the_logo?
135 and 150. 160 vector. The logo cannot be installed by simply rewriting the built-in one.

My relatives just decided to fly away from an unpredictable area without waiting for further changes. Not a very brave act :) , but the children will be fine.

@Grey I can use this method ->

How do I change the logo?
The logo that appears in the top left of each page is determined by the $wgLogo configuration line in the LocalSettings.php file.

There are two ways to change the logo:
Upload a picture to your wiki using the normal file uploading interface. This allows the logo to be replaced easily, so you may want to protect the page if you use this method.
Then add the $wgLogo line to LocalSettings.php, for example:
$wgLogo = "{$wgUploadPath}/6/62/mylogo.png";
Upload an image to your server by other means (such as FTP).
Add the $wgLogo line to LocalSettings.php, for example:
$wgLogo = "{$wgScriptPath}/mylogo.jpg";
(In this example, the image is in the same folder as the LocalSettings.php file.)

If you want to change the logo in only specific pages, override #p-logo css's background-image property or use third party extension like Extension:LogoFunctions.
Caution! Caution: Do not simply overwrite the default logo installed with MediaWiki (/resources/assets/wiki.png); this file will be overwritten when you upgrade.

I have now on a local web server hosted by a Puppy Linux Bionic64-CE that is running the cutting edge MediaWiki 1.37.1 and the stable LTS 1.35.5 mediawiki systems. Also now an almost fully functional WikkaWiki with it's Puppy Linux database intact., is running.

I am getting ready an attempt to use the conversion tool MwImporter though first must generate all the existing Wikka pages into html format to be able to use the tool.

The conversion exports and imports should be "easier" when side-by-side on the same server.

Logo

We had an Old New Year here yesterday. The need to celebrate the New Year twice in two weeks greatly hinders and distracts :), but such is the tradition.

Now I'm sitting and thinking how to cram the plot into 150 pixels. I would like to depict a door with the letter W, which would hint at both a water closet and a Wiki. And plus a puppy with an encyclopedia with the same letter. I have to place the fantasy in the available pixels :)

Different devices. Different approach.

Any reports on the use of MwImporter?

If you have a couple of html pages from the wikka, would you be kind enough to zip and attach for experimentation?

@williwaw I haven't got that far yet. I do have the entire Wikka running on the Bionic64 though. Once I have a couple of things straightened out on the KLV alpha12 we'll see if we can get some pages to test with.

Does the running wikka allow you to copy pages of the wikka in its markup or export to other filetypes, rather than generate to html?

@williwaw I have only briefly looked at the export possibilities. But from what I saw was not straight forward. Might be something that writes XML files....but don't quote me on that

maybe exporting to another file type might be overkill for my needs, although if you are considering generating html from wikka in order to migrate to mediawiki, have you seen http://wikkawiki.org/HTMLHandler ?

my thought though is to convert wikka markup to some other markup, maybe markdown as it could be usable to keep documentation at a github repo. When time allows, could you see if there is a way to copy and attach a few pages of the older documentation, if you can access it in text with the wikka markup?
thanks

The Puppy Linux WikkaWiki is FIXED!!

Existing users can login with their previous credentials.

New users can now register accounts on the wiki.
