Unable to watch DVD movies after installing BionicPup64 on flash drive (Solved)

Post by DeeMal »

Compaq Desktop
AMD Athlon 64X2 Dual Core Processor 4000+
2 gigs of RAM
1280x1024 video

chromiumerror.png

Bionic Puppy 64-8.0 uefi
Installed on 15 gig Lexar Flash Drive
2-4 gig swap file (I increased it twice and can't remember which size I did last.)
1 gig of RAM
Downloaded OS last week & burned it to a DVD on a different faster laptop.

Third, I am unable to watch DVD movies ONCE I have saved my OS on my flash drive. It will not load in player or VLC which I downloaded. Is it the same licensing issue that you have when you install Ubuntu or their derivatives. If so, is it the same solution or is the only way I am going to look at the three stooges is by inserting my live DVD, taking it out once it boots, and putting my DVD in my drive? Not asking for a friend.

Does anything happen when you put a DVD movie in the drive? Does the drive light flicker like it's doing something?

LG Slim Portable DVD Writer

I checked to make sure that the writer worked on my everyday Zorin OS computer as I had to throw one of them out months ago. It booted the Puppy Live CD and I am able to play DVD movies with no issue. Of course, this was done after jumping the extra hoops that are required to jump in playing DVDs on Ubuntu & Ubuntu derivative distros after the initial install: https://itsfoss.com/play-dvd-ubuntu-1310/ There is a program that is a lot easier called Kodi that I install from time to time, but I digress.

On the system that I hoped to use Puppy on the most, a Compaq desktop, the lights come on on the writer and show the icon of the unit on the desktop while asking me this question:

DVD message4.png (11.15 KiB) Viewed 378 times
DVD message4B.png
DVD message4B.png (123.53 KiB) Viewed 378 times

After that, it does nothing. Sits there like it hasn't asked me anything.

In addition, I have attempted to boot from this drive the live disk on the Compaq. It no longer will boot on this machine even though it notices it and you may choose it when changing boot parameters. And again, but when it did boot, in the past, I was able to take out the live disk, insert the DVD movie, and look at it without an issue UNTIL I installed Puppy to the USB Drive. This is of course secondary to the other issues but my desktop screen is larger. LOL. However, I could perform the PITA & connect the screen to my laptop and play them through the Zorin OS.

Thanks.

VLC should have a log option, what do you see in there when attempting to read off it? (Generally sensitivity level to warning is good enough, but if you want debug you can set that too)

They do have a log option but I uninstalled it when it didn't work. The program that comes bundled with Pup runs before installation and after it if -- for the last time -- I take out the live disk, and replace it with the DVD movie. In fact, it doesn't even ask the question which I included in the pic here; it just plays. It just works.

This issue is resolved! I am able to watch DVD movies through VLC. While it does not automatically load and is not as elegant, I am not that fussy. I just choose the correct mounting device which is wrong by default for some reason. Who knew?

Thanks to everyone!
