Copy and Paste paths + filename to documents from XFE

Post by wizard »

After several years of using XFE I learned this new trick by accident. In the past when working on a document, script or in a terminal and I wanted to insert a file name and full path I would copy and paste the path from XFE's location box and then highlight the file name, choose Rename, and copy and paste the name. Would sometimes use Rox in a similiar way. Really useful for long paths/filenames for those of us with poor memories and keyboard skills.

Here's the new trick in XFE.

-highlight the file
-right click>copy or ctrl c
-change to your document
-right click>paste or ctrl v

This inserts the full path and the file name.

Your new trick will work in ROX,is a kind of standard in Linux.

Not to digress, but just in case, when you visit ROX:
Try
hold CTL-Left + left-click on the items you want to select.
the path/filename(s) will automagically be copied to the clipbuard
release CTL-Left - when the selections are done.
press Escape - Escape deselects the selected items.
(Not required - but it may be prudent not to have dangling selections)

go to the editor, terminal, apps for pasting
middle-click to paste the copied path/fileitems

In pcmanfm, right-click on file -> Copy Path(s)

and then you can paste full pathname of selected file into document

Which version?
In "classic" ROX-Filers Ctrl+C will trigger the copy dialog with only the basename highlighted. Ctrl-V won't paste anything.

Just tested in Fossapup64. Doesn't work either. Appears to copy but doesn't paste.
I know that in some Puppies the clipboard manager is configured to copy the primary selection to the clipboard, in which case the ROX specific Ctrl+shift leftclick selection ends up in the clipboard and paste would work, but that certainly doesn't apply to all Puppies.

Good you are awake.
Ok -if you say so.
So much for standards and puppies.

I am on FatDog64
Ctl+left click and middle-click works.

I use both Rox and XFE at the same time. Due to my poor habits when I used only Rox I would find myself with 6 or more instances of Rox open in the tray, not knowing which was which. When doing a lot of file management I prefer XFE in 3 pane mode for its speed, power and seeing 2 directories side by side in the same window. The copy and paste of full path/filenames is just a feature I hadn't found before. Handy if you're working in XFE.
