How to use Thinpad 11e wifi in Puppy?

Post by Pupper »

Hi again everyone!

OK so I have a thinpad 11e
AMD A4-6210 APU @ 1.80GHz
64 bit architecture
4 gig ram
~500 gig hard drive

my device manager on windows says that I have the following network adapters:

Broadcom 802.11ac Network Adapter
Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller
WAN Miniport (IKEv2)
WAN Miniport (IP)
WAN Miniport (IPv6)
WAN Miniport (L2TP)
WAN Miniport (Network Monitor)
WAN Miniport (PPPOE)
WAN Miniport (PPTP)
WAN Miniport (SSTP)

I am guessing that the Realtek is my wired internet driver, and I am guessing that that means that the Broadcom is the wifi driver?

In puppy I click on "Barry's simple network setup" and the only option I have under the "interfaces" tab is:

eth0 Wired r8169 pci RealTek RTL-8169 Gigabit Ethernet driver

I also have an option to click "Windows" but it says it wants a windows xp driver in .inf format.

How can I make my laptop connect to wifi???

Hi pupper.

Until one of the regular helpers responds, you can report more information about your wifi interface so they (and I) have something to work with.

Specifically:
Run
dmesg | grep 'irmware'
to see if it is a firmware issue.

Run
lspci -nn | grep 'Network'
to see the hardware ID of the wifi adapter, to be able to find the correct driver.

I assume from your other posts that you are using fossapup64. Good.

Hi Richard!

here is the output of those commands you mentioned:

root# dmesg | grep 'irmware'
[ 1.391524] ACPI: [Firmware Bug]: BIOS _OSI(Linux) query ignored
[ 1.416331] acpi PNP0A08:00: [Firmware Info]: MMCONFIG for domain 0000 [bus 00-3f] only partially covers this bridge
[ 32.029585] [drm] Found UVD firmware Version: 1.64 Family ID: 9
[ 32.098751] [drm] Found VCE firmware/feedback version 40.2.2 / 15!
[ 32.539301] bluetooth hci0: Direct firmware load for brcm/BCM20702A1-0489-e07a.hcd failed with error -2

root# lspci -nn | grep 'Network'
01:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Broadcom Inc. and subsidiaries BCM4352 802.11ac Wireless Network Adapter [14e4:43b1] (rev 03)

and yes I am running fossapup64 :thumbup2:

Thanks for that information.

I searched on the "BCM4352 802.11ac Wireless Network Adapter [14e4:43b1]" text and found some info at:
https://askubuntu.com/questions/590442/ ... 14e443b1-r

No need to be discouraged by the building of the ...source package. The device is apparently supported by only the Broadcom proprietary driver, wl. Fortunately, the driver has already been built by ozsouth and is available here:
viewtopic.php?p=34408#p34408
This is usable with only the kernel built into fossapup. Be sure to install wl in a test environment before "adopting" it.

A second issue: the bluetooth part of the device needs firmware, indicated by:
"bluetooth hci0: Direct firmware load for brcm/BCM20702A1-0489-e07a.hcd failed with error -2"

Maybe someone else can give you a "puppy" way to resolve that problem, if it is important. However, I found this as a possible source for the firmware:
