@fredx181 :-

Right, Fred; a wee 'poser' for you.

After installing the xbps-tools package, it does indeed show up in the right-click stuff. However, despite that 4.7 will now handle extracting .xbps packages, it's not actually working here; needs package

Code: Select all

unzstd

.....which isn't in the Void repos. What d'you reckon? Have a nose around over at pkgs.org, perhaps? Just thought I'd better mention it, like....

Mike. ;)

Ah yes, Mike, "unzstd" is part of "zstd" package (available from Void), here's the package again with dependency zstd added (will be automagically installed).

Well, despite that it won't download through the package manager (says it can't find the mirror signature at edu.clarkson something-or-other), I found the exact same package over at pkgs.org. Installed libzstd using your "Install-xbps" utility.....tried UExtract with an xbps package.....still bitching about "no unzstd found".

However, your "Extract-xbps" utility handles it with aplomb, so it's something of a moot point; UExtract still works for everything else! Perhaps in this case a dedicated tool is better than one which attempts to be "one-size-fits-all".

That's the first time I've ever had UExtract fail on me!

It's just "zstd" required to install xbps-install zstd, then should work with Uextract too , not ?

You may need to update the repositories, adding -S will do xbps-install -S zstd

I uploaded KLV-Airedale-alpha7 Link in the first post

Added all of fredx181's latest utilities (I think! anything missing let me know)
xdeb for installation of Debian and Ubuntu .deb packages included
pFind, UExtract, Packit, Syndownload are built in.
Puppy Linux Kernel 5.15.12oz from @ozsouth

Some other fine tuning as well. It should work just to swap the 07KLV-airedale_rootfs.sfs into the previous alpha's and remove the SFS files that have been removed from alpha7's setup.

The first link to Alpha 7 I get a 404 Not found. The bottom alternate link does work.

Yes, in path, "Airedale" missing on first link to Alpha 7, so should be this:

That seems all fine on alpha7, except that "zstd' isn't installed.
As this has different kernel from alpha6 I was hoping that the long delay at boot for me (on old HP laptop) would be be solved, but not, still 30-40 sec delay, after "Booting the kernel" (I don't have this problem with kernel 5.15 on DebianDog, btw).

Another thing: why the separate sfs modules ? (e.g. for tas, screencontrol), these are very small, could as well be part of the main rootfs sfs, I think.

@fredx181 Good points !! I am right now in the process of including those SFS's into the build rootfs. Also I have to add zstd which will happen in the next hour or so. Just doing it in stages to prevent me blowing the thing up.

I also have a boot delay on one machine but not the other. I think later today I will try out different kernels and see how they perform and if boot speed increases.

Okay.

Downloaded Alpha7; opened the ISO, and swapped the 07KLV-airedale_rootfs.sfs over. Re-booted, annnd....everything working nicely. Apart from the fact that I can't find this 'Syndownloader' of Keef's.....

@mikewalsh Sorry about that. I left out the .desktop file. It is in /usr/local/app just click on it. Adjust the download directory path inside the app in the script syndownload-launcher.

Bugger! Didn't think of that.... :D

I've just thrown one together for it. Used a big bright green downward-pointing arrow for an icon, so's I can stick it in the panel as a launcher, over in the notification area and it's immediately obvious what it is.....

(*shrug*)

I've built so many of 'em over the years I can do 'em with my eyes shut now. Takes me all of about 2-3 minutes!

@fredx181 I wonder if the mismatched firmware.sfs is causing the boot delay??

I got the iso from the first link in the first post of this topic.
https://rockedge.org/kernels/data/iso/K ... alpha7.iso
.
Should it have, those other SFS files, that you are not showing in your posted image, of what you have in alpha 7 directory?

@bigpup I replaced the version you have with the more complete one that is there now. You can replace what you have currently with a new download. Same link.

The alpha7 doesn't need those SFS files because those components are now built in.

Also discovered that for the TAS "edit" button to work, one needs to create:

/usr/local/bin/defaultpaint

Code: Select all

#!/bin/sh
mtpaint "$@"

then in a terminal:

Code: Select all

ln -s /usr/local/bin/defaultpaint /usr/local/bin/defaultimageeditor

Some other small things:
- zstd is not installed, so extract .xbps won't work (needs unzstd, part of zstd)
Solution; install zstd: xbps-install zstd or re-install xbps-tools package here:
viewtopic.php?p=46347#p46347
- Rox doesn't have right-click "Uextract"
Solution: reinstall uextract package (with fix) from here:

I was thinking this is not what was really suppose to be posted as alpha7.

But now it is time to see what alpha 8 can offer.

When you get to something that is looking closer to being a finished version.
I will hit it hard, testing all I can.
Right now I am looking for big issues or problems and general overall operations.

You going to put Gparted in this thing?

Any kind of installer program you thinking of having?
I was starting to see how well Frugalpup Installer and all it's different installers, would work.
Now I will try it in alpha 8.

@bigpup before we reach the Beta phase, GParted will be included I think. I have been installing it as I need it but have not tested it out more than format Virtual machine virtual hard drives.

Alpha 8

Installed Gparted using OctoXBPS
Seems to be working.
Had to download and install some of the other needed required software.
Mainly e2fsprogs, to get support to do anything with: ext 2, 3, or 4 formats.

Only adding e2fsprogs.
Here is what file systems are supported now.
.

.
Here is file system support with the following added:
e2fsprogs
mtools
f2fs-tools
The ntfs support was already in alpha 8.
Note:
Did not install dosfstools.
By the chart, it does not seem to be needed, only mtools.

Alpha 8.

To get Gparted->Help->Contents to show the manual.

Had to install yelp.

Not to sure if that is also needed by some other stuff.

Before I try using this or even if I should.

There is the OctoXBPS Notifier, that tells you about updates to stuff, that is available to download and install.

Should we try doing this updating or leave it alone?
Keep whatever is in the iso release, as it is?

@bigpup :-

Thanks for the info about e2fsprogs, mtools, etc., & yelp. Now I know why gParted didn't actually show anything IN the partitions with regard to space in use, etc.

I wonder why the Void package manager didn't pull those in when it installed gParted?

Some ideas:

- Load swap at boot
As Mike pointed out earlier it can be done by editing /etc/fstab.
But that way cannot be integrated in the ISO, since the swap partition is probably different for everyone, this is the "Puppy" way (similar):

Code: Select all

#### Load swap ####
 echo "LOAD SWAP"
  for ONESWAP in `fdisk -l | grep ' Linux swap' | cut -f 1 -d ' ' | tr '\n' ' '`
  do
    echo -n "Loading swap partition $ONESWAP..." >/dev/console
    swapon $ONESWAP
  done
#########################

- Create "/mnt/home" symlink (pointing to the partition you booted from):
EDIT: Needs testing, works for me but not sure if it works in all circumstances.

Code: Select all

#### Create symlink /mnt/home ####
MNTHOME=$(mount | grep "/mnt/layers/merged/mnt" |  cut -d'/' -f3 | cut -d' ' -f1)
ln -sf /mnt/$MNTHOME /mnt/home
#########################

To make it run at boot, put above in a script and point to it from e.g. /etc/rc.local (system-wide) or /root/Startup

Also, a fix for "filemnt"
A bit annoying that it fails to mount the chosen .sfs IF the directory/mountpoint in /mnt already exists (leftover from earlier session)
Fixed by checking if directory is empty (rather than if it exists)

filemnt.tar.gz
(4.16 KiB) Downloaded 66 times

Contains also "filemnt-thunar" script that will open the mounted SFS in thunar (therefore need to set it to "open with" in Thunar (or make "Custom Action"))

Alpha 8

I have been testing Gparted.
After installing the needed additional software to support working with the different formats.
Seems to be working as it should.

One more additional software needed.
Gparted->Device->Attempt Data Rescue......
This needs gpart added.

Gpart is available from OctoXBPS.
So was easy to add.

gpart
Partition table rescue/guessing tool

Note:
Gparted does start, by scanning all possible drives on the computer.
Gives drop down list, of which one to choose, to work on.
Have to take a look at how Gparted is started, in normal Puppy version menu, that gives you selection of what drive, before Gparted opens.
So Gparted opens, only looking at that specific, selected drive.

On alpha8 the octoxbps program doesn't run from Menu, reason is probably that /home/spot isn't owned by spot (is owned by root).
Fixed it by running chown -R spot:spot spot
(and similar is needed to be done for /home/weedog and /home/void I guess (also owned by root))

EDIT; Looking back I see:

Well, I actually installed Gparted in Alpha 7.

When I updated to Alpha 8, by manually replacing all the KLV-airedale SFSs.
I kept the save directory from Alpha 7 (sorry, I am not using KLV right now and forget the name of the directory)
So, all the stuff I installed using Alpha 7 is still there.

My Alpha 8 install, seems to be OK, getting OctoXBPS started, using the menu entry.

I am on my Rasberry Pi 400, right now, running Raspup.

I will ,check my install of Alpha 8, in a little while, and see if I see what you posted about, for your Alpha 8, and getting OctoXBPS to run from menu.

I favor all @bigpup has shown for Gparted.

I request, that when Gparted in a part of the distro, it ALSO has it with ExFAT support since so much is now being provided using that partition format.

This distro is wonderful as it evolves.
