The "Help" button brings up a very extensive and detailed explanation of what it does and how to use it.
You use it for making audio calls and sending instant messages to other people.
A bit like with e-mail, where you get yourself an e-mail address and use it to send e-mail correspondence to other people's e-mail addresses.
You get yourself a SIP address, which looks similar to an e-mail address, for example sip:yourname@somedomain.com
Then you use it for calling and messaging others via their SIP addresses, all for free.
You can also sign up with providers and make calls to normal telephone numbers. Usually you will have to pay for the calls you make to numbered phones, but you can receive calls from other people's phones at no cost to you.

Oscar,
I got my sip: addy.
Though the login button never completed the process, it's left hanging. The loggin' in dialog appears, and it's not doing it.

You probably need to post more details about exactly what you are doing. I have tested in Slacko32 7.0 and it works for me. You click the Setup button in PSIP. The Preferences dialog box opens. Use the Account tab to fill in your details of full SIP address plus the other fields. There are pop-up tooltips when you hover mouse over those fields to help you fill in things correctly. Make sure you include the "sip:" prefix including the colon where needed. Once all the details are correct you can close the Preferences window and click the "Logged out" button in PSIP and it should change to a "Logged in" button with a green dot. The message that you are logged in also appears along the bottom. I have no problem logging in with SIP addresses I have registered with several different domains.

Oscar,
Can u show what should be selected in the other tabs, not only in account? Audio is clear, so only the other 2?
Btw there's a field - pstn phone, when registering. What it's for?

I am not sure which field during registration you are talking about, but pstn phones are just the normal land-line and mobile phones which you call by using a normal phone number.

For logging in you should not need to make any changes to the other tabs in Preferences.
Are you still not able to Log in?
What SIP provider are you registered with?
There may be some incompatibility because of TLS or something. Maybe try registering a free SIP address with iptel.org or linphone.org at least to prove to yourself that the Log in process works.

Another test which you (and others) can do:-
Press the "Calls" button to open the Call window
Type in "sip:thetestcall@iptel.org" (without the quotes)
Press the Make Call button
Follow the prompts to do various tests via the number keypad:-
Record and hear back a message
Real time echo test
Music on hold
Audio tone sweep test
DTMF number testing
Read back of your caller ID
And more
This should work even if you are not logged in, but really you need to be logged in so that others can contact you and for things to be fully functional

I registered with iptel.org, that's the first thing ever I did.
All tests worked, though loggin' in is still the same. Can I call smokey-01 address & see what happens?

I am surprised that an iptel SIP address will not log in if you have filled in the details correctly. I wonder what type of internet connection you are using?
You could try setting a port number in the Network tab that is different from the default 5060 but otherwise I don't know what to suggest.
I am not in a position to suggest that you call Smokey01. All I can say is that your call would probably go through if the tests work, but your caller ID would not display if you are not logged in. People may not be on-line to answer anyway. Iptel does have a voicemail service, but the user would need to have it activated.
