HP OfficeJet 4655 Printer issues in Bionic Beaver(64) 18.00 frugal install[SOLVED]

Post by Sky Aisling »

Hello, :)

OK, here we go again. The ole printer install questions.

Yes, I am studying rcrsn51's tutorial on installing printers in Puppy.
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewto ... 080#444080

I've got a 'new' machine to me:

Computer Vendor: LENOVO
Product Name: 10117
Version: Lenovo H535
Serial Number: ES13191202
6GB of RAM, no HDD, broken card reader, desktop model, but whiz bang fast compared to my 12 year old HP laptop. :D

Distro: Bionic Beaver(64), frugal installed on flash drive

I used CUPS 2.2.7 to load "HP OfficeJet 4650 series" as choice of printer.

The printer goes through all the normal actions to print, but, then doesn't print. The printer hangs on 'printing'.

Log says print job completed. Copy function works. Xsane says Scan doesn't recognize computer.

I'm thinking a new HPLIP app is needed? Version 3.20.9?
I have downloaded the lastest HPLIP from the HP developer portel, version: 3.20.9 hplip-3.20.9.run.
hplip-3.20.9.run didn't want to 'run'

Is there a .pet for the latest hplip for a Bionic Beaver(64) frugal install?

Thanks in advance,

Sky

I finally got my HP printer (Deskjet 3700 series) to work when I loaded hpcups 3.18.6 (all others failed just like yours), but only via usb, wireless no luck. The differences in the printers may mean you need a different driver, I don't know.

I'm running my HP 15 laptop with BionicPup64 v8, frugal on a stick, same CUPS as you.

Thank you for your response.
Where did you find the .pet for hpcups 3.18.6?
And, did you mean hplip 3.18.6 rather than hpcups?

hpcups 3.18.6 apparently came from the printer when I let CUPS 'find new printer'.
BTW, hpcups 3.18.6 is a 'copy and paste' right out of CUPS.

I'd suggest removing all the old info, rebooting to clear everything out, connect via usb and let CUPS 'find' the printer, you may have a different driver show up, try it, it might work.
As for the other features on your printer, it's 'Shultz' time, "I know Nothing".

@Sky - this may be another dry well, but I made a .pet for HPLIP 3.18.6 for bionicpup64. It is 20mb. Use at own risk.
Install by clicking on it in ROX-Filer & try to install printer. Good luck.
.pet is here: LINK EXPIRED.

ozsouth, pet works, both wired and wireless.

I set up a new save file, so I wouldn't have any accidental file carry over from what I've been using.

However, I found a problem, and not just in your HPLIP 3.18.6, but also in my hpcups 3.18.6. Image size seem unalterable. I only use this printer for book covers (8.5 x 14) so I didn't notice. Since I only have copy on the front cover and spine, I didn't see the problem, but when I was checking your .pet, I found it. I tested with a text page with .5 inch margins and my copy was out of position by 7/16" on the header, and cut off on the bottom of the sheet by a good inch and a half.
I switched over to the one I set up, and got the same results.

While it works for what I do, I can not recommend it to anybody else.
In my earlier post, I said I was like 'Shultz' "I know Nothing", looks like I proved it.

@ferretgrandpa - I can't test it which is why I said 'Good Luck'. Would be interesting to see if different software (Libreoffice, Gimp, something else) would have a different outcome. Guess I was just hoping to get Sky's printer going in some fashion.

Hello all,
Apologies, ozsouth, for being slow to see your email. I'm getting use to using this forum. Looks like each time I post a topic or reply I have to check the box to receive notifications. Also, using the @ sign correctly when notifying someone their name is mentioned is a new habit to me. So, back to the topic at hand...

I've downloaded the hplip-3.18.6 from http://www.filepup.net/files/6aba32a51604493175.html.

Pet failed to install.
EDIT: Pet did install, please ignore the above whine.
I'm going now to see if it activates the printer. Back in a few...
EDIT @ozsouth @ferretgrandpa BINGO! Thank you ozsouth, the .pet worked. Printer working now with hplip-3.18.6 on Bionic Beaver(64).

I would like to see that you get 'thanked' for your assistance. I see some members accumlating 'thanks' but not others that I have thanked so I'm thinking there is another button to push in the forum so that members can be thanked. Does anyone know how members get accumulated 'thanks'?

Should just click on the thumb up icon on the post you want to thank.
I just did it to your post above this one.

Thanks names accumulate, as people click on the thumbs up icon, for that specific post.

Hi Team,
Oppps! all of a sudden the HP printer fails to connect through bb64 to the Lenovo machine.

Computer Vendor: LENOVO
Product Name: 10117
Version: Lenovo H535
Serial Number: ES13191202

Distro: bionicpup64 8.0
Window Manager: JWM v2.3.7
Desktop Start: xwin jwm

Printer: HP OfficeJet 4655
All-in-one printer

I used ozsouth's suggested download site last month to download the HPlip-3.18.6 driver.
http://www.filepup.net/files/6aba32a51604493175.html.
All was working fine until yesterday.
The CUPS printer manager does not acivate.
Printer prompt screen says printer is not connected to Lenovo machine.
I downloaded another HPlip-3.18.6 then attempted to install. See error message below.

I tried running printer from another computer (Dell Inspiron) that runs bb64 (the same version as running on the Lenovo).
Same results: printer not connected to machine messages.

I tried running from yet another computer (HP Notebook) that runs Dpup Stretch 7.5 using HPlip-3.14.4 (with patch).
Results: The printer works normally.

The issue seems to be with HPlip-3.18.6?
Where to start looking for more clues?

Sky

@Sky Aisling - strange. Did you load anything else? Shouldn't just stop working.
You would have to uninstall my .pet via Puppy Package Manager (see Applications/Setup menu) before installing another.
Does this printer ever face Windows & if so did you do an HP update in it? That can change settings.
I guess you've turned the printer off & on again.
The fact that a separate PC has the same issue suggests a printer problem.

@ozsouth

Well, I've managed to construct a work-a-round.

I used the Grub04 Cyan (blue/green) screen to boot up BB64 in RAM only.
CUPS management system worked.
The driver for the HP OfficeJet 4655 didn't show on CUPS first list they presented.
I searched their 'other' list.
The 'other' option did show the correct HP driver which I chose.
I downloaded HPlip-3.18.6 .pet from your suggested site and put it in root file 'downloads'.
http://www.filepup.net/files/6aba32a51604493175.html
Tested printer. Printer worked.
I moved HPlip-3.18.6 .pet to my storage partition (created as a partition ext4.)
(Puppy s.f.s. is on a Fat 32 partition)
Tested printer. Printer worked.
I powered off and made a new session-save.
Powered back on choosing the new session-save. The printer still works with no issues.
Now, there are two save-files to choose at bootup, the old problematic set up and this new setup that prints but needs to be customized again to suit my preferences.

So now, I guess my choice is start over customizing this printer-working setup.

Maybe that is best as it looks like Firefox browser blew up tonight for everybody. Firefox appears to have lost all saved bookmarks. They have a big warning banner when Firefox comes up that the bookmarks feature is trashed. Sigh!

Thank you, ozsouth for your response.

Hi Puppers, long time no see. :P Hope you all are weathering the C19 thingy in good health. I'm fine, just 2 years older.

Well, here we are a year later and the same issue has arisen as my original post in this thread last year.

The printer still is a HP OfficeJet 4655. BionicBeaver-64 is still the puppy in use.

Today 12-4-21 the printer won't scan using Xsane v .0999. All other printer functions work.

I downloaded geo_c's new HPlip viewtopic.php?p=42045&hilit=hplip#p42045
The .sfs was put in /initrd/mnt/dev_save and loaded.
.sfs says hplip is version=3.20.3.

I turned off printer.
I rebooted system.
I turned on printer.
I executed Xsane via terminal.

Xsane says 'no devices available'.

Is this an issue with HPlip.sfs (per geo_C's working version)?
or
Is this an issue with Xsane v .0999?
or
Is this a combo of the two?

Note: two years ago the Xscan worked. I was able to scan on the HP OfficeJet 4655 printer using Xsane v .0999.

Thanks in advance for any assistance you care to offer.

Sky

Try:

Code: Select all

sane-find-scanner

and if you got info about your scanner try this:

Code: Select all

scanimage -L

You should get info about your scanner again.
Try to scan something.

Looks like contradictory information? First screen says USB scanner found. Second screen says 'no scanners identified'. ?

@puppy_apprentice

The tip on HOWTO/Scanner... says:
"First, don't despair. If you're sure you've done everything correctly up to this point, all the right modules are loaded and all the configuration files tweaked as outlined and you know you're hardware is supported, check your permissions. In order to access scanner hardware you must have read and write access."

Where do I go to find 'permissions'?
Here?

See Section 3.3 for more info.

But we are root so we have all permissions. So try to follow rest of How-to.

Just to eliminate one possible cause.

Try using a different USB cable, to hook it to the computer.

Also, make sure the two connection points (ports), are clean, and the tabs inside, are not bent or dirty.

Make sure, when the USB cable is plugged in, it feels tight, not loose connection.

The metal sides of the computer connection port, can get bent outward, so it is a too loose a connection.
You can carefully bend them back to normal position.

If the computer USB connection is on the front of the computer case.
They have internal wiring connected to the motherboard.
That motherboard connection can get dirty, corroded, loose, etc......

The things you do not tell us, are usually the clue to fixing the problem.

Try using a different USB cable, to hook it to the computer.

All other printer functions work.

Geo_c needs to confirm if scanning actually works for him.

Note: two years ago the Xscan worked. I was able to scan on the HP OfficeJet 4655 printer using Xsane v .0999.

Using which hplip package? Does that pre-date the above 2020 discussion?
