Pale Moon webbrowser virus

Post by Mike3 »

So I read Pale Moon was infected with a virus back in December 2017 according to this article:

https://www.zdnet.com/article/pale-moon ... -versions/

I'm using puppy linux 6.9.9.9 that was made and added to ibiblio back in july 2017. It includes palemoon 27.3.0 released in April 2017.
Does this mean the palemoon version I got is safe from the virus due to it being from before the virus infection?

Or could a later version or some things have been added later or with some update when installing the os or something?

In other words am I safe from it?

The article says that the archived (older) versions were modified or substituted. The version in Slacko 6.9.9.9 would have been the current one at the time, so not in the affected archive section.
Furthermore, it looks like it was the Windows versions (.exe) that were contaminated, so highly unlikely that the Linux versions were affected. The malware appears to be something which would only run under Windows, so even if it was in the Linux versions it probably would not actually run.
In any case, it is always best to upgrade to latest Palemoon anyway. This is easy to do. Just ask if you need any help with doing that.

@Mike3 :-

If you want to, you can do as a number of us do, and run 'portable' versions of a lot of browsers, instead. It's an easy way to keep 'em completely self-contained, and you can move 'em, and run 'em, from anywhere you like (outside of the save-file/folder. naturally!)

I've just upgraded the PaleMoon-portable packages this morning to 28.13.0.....released 48 hours ago. If you're interested, take a look here:-

Usage instructions are in the post. Hope that helps.

Looks cool. The only issue I have with my current Pale Moon version is that recaptcha doesnt work.

Will it work better in a later version?

Is it more secure to use the portable version?

Short answer - no. All the files will be in one place, so easier to get rid of and re-install if needed.

why pale moon?

did B. K. use PM one time  ?

why FF?

we are using the Mozilla suite    ...

her name is today seamonkey for all : browser, address book, IRC, editing sites and HTML (if clean, ALL that is clean  !). but new hobby developers have better impressions about what is good or not :geek:

and forget the user of the rich tradition of Mozilla suite in Puppy (no continuity in email service in seamonkey etc. ... Thank you, new developer offering such poor solutions...

better:

- NO browser
- NO email client
- NO would like to be a real HTML
- NO not compatible address book!

I think Barry K made PM, then others took over.

I dont use html or address books for now any other reason to switch?

Does Seamonkey have recaptcha support?

Your wording is a bit hard to get? Who are you calling "hobby developers"?

you ...

... can offer in

OPTION

all that what you want (also the chip of Elon Musk for the brain :thumbup2:

but NOT in a Puppy some other brother "fully integrated"!

if, do nothing in it, no browser, not email client, no "better" HTML editor, of IRC-like client, no address book and let the puppyist himself download what he is using (and perhaps, also for compatibility with his data on board, prefering  !)

such inconsiderate attitude harms Puppy

all the time since 2004 did Puppy people try to introduce new browser. with other browsers (opera etc.) did MU made "legendly" working with 7..11 MB ISO-size (only online working!!!).

of course did BK try sometimes somewath different.

but,

as his own «site builder» is based on Seamonkey :thumbup2: (yes, BK has also a own site builder!)

I know that Seamonkey is a MUST.

I follow BK since 2003 and use all his goodies, rox, mtpaint, didiwiki, etc. etc. and

Seamonkey!

(but I write actually out Palemoon  ! it is so, because josejp2424 did use it, it is not my choice... :!:

and I did thank those developer integrating some Chrome in her Puppy's because google offers sometime different options

but not always!)

FYI, oui is from the French/German border area. English is something like his 3rd (or 4th) language, and I believe he makes liberal use of Google Translate. We're all used to how he communicates by now, but it does take some getting used to for the uninitiated..!

I believe you'll find the reference is to do with Puppy essentially being what's known as a "hobbyist" system.....meaning it's not just for those who wish to install and simply use. It's equally for those who enjoy tearing their system to pieces, and re-building it the way they want it to work. Thus,

Puppy developers = "hobby developers".

(At least, I think that's what our Gallic colleague is referring to...)
