PPM doesn't list Ubuntu repository? (Solved)

Post by benali72 »

I've been upgprading some instances to FossaPup64 9.5.

Using PPM, I searched for several packages that it didn't list. But PPM found them in the Ubuntu repository and installed them just fine (eg, Seamonkey, ReText, Aisleriot).

I wondered: from where does PPM get the list of packages it displays? (It doesn't appear to list all the Ubu repository packages)

===========================
On another topic -- after the installs, Puppy didn't boot, giving me the message PAM Failure, aborting: immediate abort

I found the answer in this forum post, applied it, and Puppy then booted fine (https://www.forum.puppylinux.com/viewto ... ure#p23613). Thanks!

Have you run PPM>Configure>Update Database?

You need to do that, really before you use PPM or do it every few weeks.
PPM keeps a database file, that is just a listing of what is actually in the repositories.
PPM uses this database, to determine what is and is not in the repository, to download and install.
The repositories are constantly adding and removing, what is in them.
But the PPM database, only knows about what was there, the last time you updated the database.

Keep in mind, that these non-Puppy repositories, are for the specific Linux OS.
They usually only provide stuff, that is not already in the specific Linux OS.
That may or may not be exactly the same, as what is already in the Puppy version.

Thank you, Bigpup, I have updated the PPM listing.

What I don't understand is -- why doesn't the PPM list all the Ubuntu packages I'm allowed to install?

For example, I used the PPM search function and located Aisleriot, then installed it.

But neither before nor after the install does PPM include Aisleriot in its listing of packages.

(The default sources used are -- ubuntu-focal-main, ubuntu-focal-multiverse, ubuntu-focal-universe, puppy-fossa64).

Thank you.

I have Fossapup64 9.5 fully updated by using Quickpet>Info>Fossapup updates

Tried it using PPM in my install of Fossapup64 9.5
Did a search for aisleriot in PPM search.
Shows in the package list, to select for download.
Seems to download and install OK with a couple of needed dependencies.
Runs OK.
Not a bad game, with lots of optional versions of solitaire.

It lists it installed in the PPM uninstall list, where it should show it, when installed.

Thank you, Bigpup.

Yes, I am able to search and install Aisleriot.

My question is, why does PPM not list Aisleriot in its list of available repository packages?

I have a set of packages to install. I'm able to search for, find, and install them all from PPM. But PPM doesn't list any of them in its list of available packages.

(examples are Aisleriot, gnome-cards-data, ReText, Ghostwriter, etc).

From the standpoint of accomplishing my goal, this doesn't matter at all. PPM does the job.

It's more an curiosity... PPM will find and install Ubuntu packages, but it doesn't include them in its lists of packages from any of the 4 radio-button repository options. Very odd.

Thanks.

The search in PPM does a search of all repositories and all categories at one time.
It filters nothing out.
It will list stuff, even if it is already installed (has a green check mark and statement: it is already installed)

The normal listings of the repositories, require specific filtering selections, to show what is in them.
You select the repository to look in.
You select the category, to show contents of that category, in that specific repository.
The listings will filter out stuff you already have installed and those will not show in the list.
Each repository will have specific software.
So looking in a specific repository. It may not have what you want listed, because that software is not in that repository.

Jeez, how dumb of me. I was ignoring the CATEGORY button.

I get it now, I just have to point PPM at the correct CATEGORY to see all the listings.

Bigpup, thank you for your patience!

Cheers
