How to create a .pet or .sfs for Zoom under EasyOS 'Dunfell'?

Post by Maybe »

Hey! I really want to learn how to compile programs for Puppy and EasyOS. First of all, I really want to learn how to compile Zoom for video calls. The portable version @mikewalsh works great in my FossaPup64 from @666philb and Easy Puppy from @BarryK . Too bad it doesn't work in any Slako puppies and EasyOS Dunfell from @BarryK . I would like to learn how to compile Zoom.pet or Zoom.sfs for example EasyOS Dunfell. Perhaps there is a lot of information in this regard. I ask you for help, can you please tell me where to start and where to read the instructions?

@Maybe :-

I'm afraid it's no use asking me how to do it. I know very little about EasyOS and how it's designed to work, and even less about "Dunfell"....which is, I believe, an even more radical approach than earlier versions.

I can only repeat what others here on the forum have stated, viz, that normal packages simply will not run in "Dunfell". I suspect it's probably nothing to do with the packages themselves, rather that you're attempting to run "Dunfell" as a 'normal' OS.....which it isn't. I think you need to learn to work with the OS, rather than against it.....and to learn to use packages in the way that"Dunfell" has been designed to handle them.

Beyond that, I cannot help.

If you need information about how to do things in Easy OS, any version.

You need to post in the EasyOS section of this forum.
viewforum.php?f=63

EasyOS is not Puppy Linux and it does not work exactly like Puppy.

The things you do not tell us, are usually the clue to fixing the problem.
When I was a kid, I wanted to be older.
This is not what I expected :o

Read this blog post:

https://bkhome.org/news/202110/chrome-9 ... eated.html

This is for EasyOS 3.x, not for EasyPup or any other pup or dog.

Ok, thanks a lot for the advice!

Dear @BarryK, please tell me how relevant is the article from your blog about the new2dir, dir2pet and dir2sfs utilities?
https://easyos.org/dev/coding-for-easyos.html

I tried to create pet or sfs myself using the tips from your article. But I can't. Here's what I did:

1. I downloaded zoom_x86_64.tar.xz from the official site, in search I used the file for other Linux systems.

2. Unpacked zoom_x86_64.tar.xz. And renamed the folder to Zoom_5.8.3

3. Opened this folder and using "~" on keyboard opened the terminal

4. In the terminal I entered the command:

Code: Select all

new2dir make install

Then I went through several transformation steps. As a result, I got an empty folder zoom_5.8.3-amd64 and some other file next to the folder Zoom_5.8.3.

5. An attempt to follow your instructions and start dir2pet or dir2sfs failed.

Hi Dmitry

if starting with zoom_x86_64.tar.xz,
try "dir2sfs" in the search bar at https://bkhome.org/news/
for me, it brings up https://bkhome.org/news/201811/dir2sfs-take-2.html

An attempt to follow your instructions and start dir2pet or dir2sfs failed

How did dir2sfs fail?

once the zoom directory is renamed to work with dir2sfs, (for example, zoom_1.2.3-1_amd64) the gui should come up. useful documentation about the various steps can be found with the help buttons.

quite a few steps, how far along did you get?

Actually, I have to agree with Barry's observations regarding the Chrome browser app for Zoom.

From experimentation, it actually works better than the desktop client. I've kinda given up on the Zoom-portable package, because for the last several releases, the Puppies I most want it to work with just produce a black screen.

The Zoom app, as Barry says, WILL only work with Chrome itself. I haven't been able to make it work with any other clone; this appears to be because Zoom have determined that Zoom MUST have WebGL to work....and like Skype, the desktop client & the browser app are to all intents & purposes the same chunk of code.

You can enable WebGL in any of the 'clones', but good luck with actually getting it to function.

Google's "Duo" & "Meet", Jitsi's "Meet" and the Skype web-app, on the other hand, all just work.....and several of these will accomplish everything Zoom can.

What IS this "obsession" with Zoom? It's no better, or worse, than any other video-conferencing tool.....and certainly nothing special! Beats me....

Oh, dear @mikewalsh ... It's not that simple here in Russia. The company where I work only uses Zoom. Other methods such as Duo or Skype are not used. I have to adjust because I cannot change it. I use Zoom from my phone, as my laptop is too weak and the web camera image is slow. I want Zoom to run smoothly, so I'm looking for ways to lobby for that. I really want to use Zoom in a light distribution of EasyOS or Puppy, since I fell in love with these operating systems!

There is another post about attempts to get Zoom working in EasyOS. Failures, unable to detect microphone I think, testing the Zoom plugin for Firefox.

However, Easy 3.1.10, out soon, will have pulseaudio and hopefully Zoom will work.

EDIT:
Here is the other thread discussing attempts to get zoom to work:

viewtopic.php?t=3446

mikewalsh,
Yes, I also was only getting the black window with the standalone app.

As 3.1.10 will have Firefox builtin, it looks like the best way to go will be the Zoom addon. As long as we can get audio to work.
