Steam for Linux is a 32bit program.

you need to have the 32bit compatibility sfs loaded, so any 64bit Puppy version has the needed stuff to run 32bit software.
For Fossapup64 9.5 You can get it from Quickpet -> Useful
Other 64bit Puppy versions will have their own 32bit compatibility sfs file, located someplace for download.
Have this loaded before you do anything about Steam!

Steam is constantly working on there software and web site.
It is now best to get the latest version of steam directly from them.

Just to add what I did to get Steam running in Fossapup64 9.5

Went to steams web site.
Top right is install button.
Clicked on that and it offered a download of steam_latest.deb.
Downloaded it and left clicked on it to install.
It puts Steam in menu -> Fun
Puts a steam.desktop file in /usr/share/applications

To get it to run.
In /usr/share/applications/
Opened the steam.desktop file in a text editor.
Edited the exec= to this:

Exec=run-as-spot /usr/bin/steam

Dragged and dropped the steam.desktop file on the desktop.
Use this to run Steam.

First time you run it.
Steam will go thru an update.
After the update make sure the Fossapup64 save is updated.

Click on the Steam desktop icon and it should now run offering the login screen.

Seems to not want to run by using the menu -> Fun -> Steam
Have not tried to figure out what it needs to run as spot.

Note:
This update process seems to not be very good sometimes or will have an issue.
I had to stop trying to run Steam.
Do a menu ->Leave ->restart graphical server
Then try to run it again, to finally get it to update, and start displaying the steam login screen.

If you get an error that there is a missing 32bit libdrm.so.2 file.

I have found that the older Linux games work very well in Puppy Linux.
Ones that are not real graphic intensive ones.
Plus a lot of them are free to use.

Please try again but this time install it with quickpet.

Note:
The Steam offered in Quickpet is a very old version.
Not sure it will update when first run it.

Just make sure the ProtonDB is enabled within steam settings,in fact tick all the boxes pertaining to Proton.

I've just installed fossapup64, tried installing Steam via quickpet, but it won't run. First error message is:

Couldn't set up steam runtime. Are you running low on disk space?

The icon for disk space is flashing red, and clicking on it says:

Error saving /root/config/rox.sourceforge.net/ROX-filer/globicons: no space left on drive.

I'm not familiar with Partview, so I don't know which partition it's trying to write to. The recovery file has 568M free, and the main drive has 59G free.

The final message was: Fatal Error: Steam needs 250 MB of free disk space to update.

Other people have had that message trying to update steam, but I didn't find a solution for Puppy linux.

There's also a message abut libpipewire-0.3.so.0 missing. Quickpet has an earlier version of libwire available, but not 0.3.

I chose to try Puppy linux because I have a 3 GB/month limit for internet, so something like lubuntu would take at least 2 months to download. However, if Puppy linux won't run Steam, I'll have to try something else.

In Vanilla Dpup you can install Steam the Debian way and it will work:

apt update
apt install steam

(A new menu entry will appear after several seconds and Steam is auto-configured to run as spot - it "just works")

I updated and edited the first post with new information.

The installation via quickpet turned out to have installed, once I added another 512 MB to save. I edited the text file, Steam gave the 'updating' window, downloaded another ~300 MB of whatever ... and I sat waiting for a long time, with just a black rectangle with a close button on screen. Steam was using cpu cycles, possibly its opening screen despite nothing showing on-screen, but I finally gave up. I restarted, and again just a black rectangle, though no extra downloading.

I think I'll try to download another OS, maybe lubuntu, and give that a try.

Thanks for the advice on how to attempt to install Steam on Puppy, but maybe Puppy just doesn't work with Steam on my mini-PC (integrated graphics).

Steam needs a lot of free space in the save.

Your save file is just too small.

Make the save file 4GB in size.

The Linux version of Steam is 32bit and I think they do not spend much time trying to make it work.

About every time you run it, does some kind of updating, using up more storage space in the save.

My save file already is 4 GB. I doubled it just in case that would solve the "just a black rectangle" problem, but it didn't.

Just did a quick check for "steam black rectangle", so it's not a Puppy-specific problem. The advice is to delete and reinstall it, which is fine if you have a fast connection and unlimited traffic. If I can download lubuntu from the public library, I'll try that first. I assume that lubuntu will likely have less trouble with Steam, and possibly run games faster.
