Can't Boot FossaPup USB on Old Computers (Solved)

Post by benali72 »

I've got 2 ten-year-old computers I'm working on. Both are Intel Core2 6700 @2.66 ghz. Their BIOS's date from 2006 and 2012.

Both computers boot BionicPup64 8.0 and XenialPup64 7.5 off USB memory sticks just fine.

However, when I try a bootable USB with FossaPup64 9.5, it won't boot. It's like it doesn't even recognize the USB as bootable.

I've tried multiple memory sticks and several different apps to create the boot images, and the USB files look fine. So I believe the USB image is correctly created.

My question is -- does FossaPup64 9.5 work on these old computers?

Or is something (like say the kernel) fundamentally different with FossaPup that might cause it not to work on these 2 old computers?

Thank you for your feedback.

Try creating the usb using: menu>setup>stickpup-usb stick installer. I've install fossa64 9.5 on lots of old dual cores and pentium D's.

Thank you for the advice.

I ended up creating a bootable CDROM with FossaPup on it. That booted fine. So I must have had some problem with the Image Writer tool in Mint I was using to create the FossaPup USB image.

Then once I booted FossaPup using the CDROM, I used the Puppy installer to create a bootable FossaPup USB. And that of course works fine.

So I'm all set. It's great to have a new puppy to play with!

Read the info, about the needed change to the pmedia= command, in the boot menu entry config file, that comes with Fossapup64 9.5
viewtopic.php?t=157

The Fossapup64 9.5 ISO has all the boot loader files used to make a live install on the USB drive.
However, they are setup for booting from a CD install.
If installed on a CD it works because the pmedia=cd is the command in the boot menu entry.

For USB booting it needs to be pmedia=usbflash.
The installers in Puppy, when making the boot menu entries, know to use this pmedia=usbflash, when installing to a USB drive.

General purpose USB installers, that other OS's can use.
Do not know to change this pmedia=cd command, when installing to USB drives.

The things you do not tell us, are usually the clue to fixing the problem.
When I was a kid, I wanted to be older.
This is not what I expected :o

I sometimes use pmedia=atahd with USB drives (sticks) to have Puppy treat the USB like a HDD install
