Thinking about a new desktop theme for EasyOS 3.1

Post by BarryK »

Thinking of recycling an old theme, booted up some old Quirky Linuxes and EasyOSs and took snapshots:

https://bkhome.org/news/202110/a-look-a ... hemes.html

I think that over the years there have been other themes, but can't find them. I only looked at old Quirky Linux and EasyOS releases, not the pups before that.

If you have a suggestion, let me know. If you think that I should NOT use a particular old theme, let me know also -- for example, I think that those green themes have had their day.

Hi Barry,

I like the presentation of Quirky64 8.1.6. A proposal: xf ptheme.

Regarding the wallpaper with "Quirky Xerus" text in it, I received an email from Duncan, he has the original of that wallpaper, without the text. He will send it to me.

These three have GTK+ 3 support, and make GTK+ 3 applications consistent with GTK+ 2 applications:

https://github.com/puppylinux-woof-CE/g ... ey_rounded
https://github.com/puppylinux-woof-CE/g ... ished_blue
https://github.com/puppylinux-woof-CE/g ... dient_grey

I'd go for one of these - even if most applications use GTK+ 2, all up-to-date browsers use GTK+ 3, and they're inconsistent with everything else unless you use a theme that supports both.

I like dimkr's polished blue with the background listed as defult42.jpg (attached) from I believe puppy 4.2. There were a number of different colours of the same pattern, so maybe one of the others would do if this doesn't suit. Sorry i don't remember who created it back then, it should be on the old murga puppy site. I use it as my standard background as it doesn't seem to affect my eyes as a number of others have over the years.

The first time I tried Easy OS, it was the theme where everything was black and white. I liked the chalk-board like simplicity of that, and the clear contrast. The only way I can think of to make it better would be black and yellow instead of black and white. Still chalkboard like, but a little easier on the eyes before I can get redshift turned on.

Thank you for all the amazingness you always share, and I look forward to seeing what you decide.

@dimkr
Thanks for those links.

Duncan sent me the brown surreal landscape, without the inserted text, and I have uploaded it as a pet, two wallpapers in the pet, one with "EasyOS" text inserted:

https://distro.ibiblio.org/easyos/noarc ... 211022.pet

The file that Duncan sent me is 351KB and I reduced the file size to 89KB, but it still looks ok. If anyone wants the original, I can send it to you.

This is the desktop snapshot from my blog, showing that brown surreal landscape wallpaper:

Saw the post about the consideration of a new theme. Since I am playing around with some customization, I thought I will post some screenshots with my progress so far.

I replaced the theme icons with "Papirus Icons" and started to replace other icons with the same icon theme. Since I prefer not having too many icons on the desktop, I added wbar on the bottom, as shown on the screenshots. There are also screenshots with the traditional icon layout.

If I may suggest, since we have "Easy Apps" and "Pup Control Panel", many of those apps could be eliminated from the menu?

But overall I really like the concept of EasyOS a lotttttt. Really awesome.

Greetings

Due to the limitations on file size, one screenshot did not make it. It is the reddish theme with the original icon layout.

@Misaligned
I like what you have done!

I have already released easyOS 3.1, pretty much kept the previous theme, or close to, with a different wallpaper. Just wanted to get the release out.

But now can consider a new theme in a more relaxed fashion, maybe for 3.2.

Yes, the menu is cluttered. The thing is though, it has been that way since the early pup days, and people are accustomed to it, know where to find what they want in it.

Hmmm, I wonder... that box drawing in the middle might make a nice logo. I have never really liked the smiling face with the thumb sticking up. Maybe without the text, as the logo would have to render nicely even when small, like 16x16.

jwm-xdgmenu in woof-CE (https://github.com/puppylinux-woof-CE/w ... -puppy-jwm) now generates a cleaner menu, with Name as the menu entry, and Comment in the tooltip. Therefore, menu entries are translatable, and .desktop files of newly installed applications don't have to be modified by woof-CE or PPM.

@Berry

Thanks for the likes. If you want to use the box as a logo, I don't mind. I can post the svg file or a png, let me know.
While I am at it, I was wondering if there is a way to hide the container icons without disabling the containers, and or
what controls the location of the container icons on the desktop?

Greetings

The box-within-a-box seems symbolic of apps running in containers in EasyOS.

Yes, would appreciate the svg!

Also, would it be ok to make your collection of wallpapers into a PET package?
Full acknowledgement of the author in the description of course.

Are you in the USA?
I have been called Berry before, by people from the USA, so is that a common name there?

Yes, US is correct and Barry is a name I ran into before, but it's spelled the same way as yours, so I won't be able to use it as an excuse. But hey, I expressed my appologies, didn't I ? :)

I don't mind creating a pet of my backgrounds ... now, I have to ask is there a tool in Easy to create those? I have done sfs packages before and as far as I know, pets are the same thing, as far as the folder structure goes, right? I glanced over the menu just now and couldn't see anything. I will take another look. Going to post the logo together with the pet. The box in the box - was actually thought to be a representation for the Easy container system.

The utility to use is 'dir2pet'

newest rox filer

Post by don570 »

I'm using new fatdog64 812
The version of ROX filer --> rox-filer-jun7-2021.09-x86_64-1.txz
fixed the problem of right clicking on the top menu button
i.e. right click is inverse of left click when listing the files by date or type or size etc.

I'm not using easyOS but I thought this info might be useful

@BarryK,

did not take the logo attachment as plain svg file, so I created the tar file.

Here is my background and it being used in EasyOS. The original is SVG. QWallpaper didn't show the SVG file as an option, so it was converted to JPG.
