Firefox error (BionicPup64), Firefox 92.0

Post by PuppyandCo »

Has anyone seen this Firefox / X error before on Puppy?
I eventually get crashes in most sessions: the memory (and I think also CPU) usage shoots up, and unless Firefox is closed quickly enough it prevents the mouse moving, the X session being changed, or a keyboard shortcut I have set up to "kill firefox". After closing and restarting it's fine again until next time. It's been doing it for the last 2 years on several different versions of FF, but this time I had opened it in terminal and happened to see the error messages.

From google it seems like it might be a problem Firefox has with certain laptop display drivers (this laptop has an Intel HD bog-standard integrated one).

Firefox 92.0 was installed how?
Specific details?
Is this a Windows version of Firefox or a Linux version?
Is Wine installed or was it ever installed and uninstalled?

The things you do not tell us, are usually the clue to fixing the problem.
When I was a kid, I wanted to be older.
This is not what I expected :o

With browsers it is best to get them from some other way than Puppy Packge Manager(PPM).
The browser packages are most of the time compiled for other Linux OS's, due to non-Puppy repositories, PPM can access.

This forums Additional Software->Browsers and Internet section is a better place to get browsers.
These are compiled for Puppy.

Some Puppy versions have their own more specific installers than PPM.
Bionicpup64 8.0 has one.

I suggest you uninstall the firefox you installed, by using PPM->Uninstall.

This is how I did it in Bionicpup64.
Bionicpup64 8.0 has the program Quickpet.
Run Quickpet->Browsers and download and install Firefox from here.
It will install an older version 62.
To update Firefox.
Run firefox and go to the help->About Firefox
It should have a selection button saying update available.
Click on the update button.
Firefox should now be version 92

Note:

This way of installing Firefox, does not need the apulse in a terminal start command.
See my terminal startup results:

Also, Quickpet has a update function, to update Bionicpup64 8.0
Quickpet->Info->Bionicpup updates
Reboot and update save, so new changes are now being used.

After reinstalling from the Quickpet it's doing the same thing but with slightly different error messages.

as you said, apulse no longer needs to be entered - and links in Thunderbird work again as they hadn't been, so that's something

Code: Select all

Did you uninstall the firefox you installed, by using PPM->Uninstall, before you installed it from Quickpet?

You are booted to the working desktop.
Is Firefox the only program running?

hi yes, at least I think so - ppm is now showing ff62 rather than 92 but I guess the upgrade done inside the app doesn't update the list in ppm

Image

FF is usually the only program running when this happens. It does seem to happen more when I have Qoppa PDFStudio open at the same time.

If there was a way of prioritizing the lxterminal process or reserving memory/CPU for it that might be even better than fixing the bug. All versions of puppylinux I've used seem to rarely crash, but to often let some application use up all the system resources until the mouse can't be moved to close them anymore

The kernel has a builtin out of memory killer, but it does not work well.

I have a similar issue, but it is not Firefox exclusive. The issue happens when I run Chrome based browsers and Mozilla based browsers at the same tim.
Visiting sites with a lot of media, such as videos, for some reason, my CPU will max out and the computer will lock up, if I don't shut down one of the browsers. Ctrl-Alt-Backspace is a backup solution.

This has been encountered on Trusty, Bionic and Fossa. I haven't taken the time to figure out what the culprit is.

Meeeooow!

snoring_cat start your own topic about your issues.

If we start talking about two different peoples problems.
It gets really confusing to follow!!

PuppyandCo,

In the desktop image you posted.
I see other stuff running in other virtual desktops. It shows you have 4 virtual desktops.
What is running in the other virtual desktops?

So to get best test of Firefox.
Only use the one virtual desktop and have no others with anything open in them.

Also, I see in your image of PPM->Uninstall list.
Firefox 62 is up at top of list.
If you just installed it.
It should be the last item in the list.
Well, in my version 2.1.2 of PPM->Uninstall list
What is just installed always shows at bottom of list.
Sure only that one Firefox is listed?

on that screenshot it would have been jwm folder windows
usually there is Thunderbird, Firefox, and sometimes libreoffice or a pdf viewer
but firefox hangs the same way whatever is open

running FF with nothing else open doesn't affect this - what I put in the s/s isn't it crashing, when it crashes there isn't the resources to take a screenshot, and usually there isn't the ability to get any error messages or log outputs since the PC must be hard reset

I didn't think you meant the virtual desktops were to blame - but I don't think they can be, as the problem has only been on this one puppy and not the others, when the others always have 4 desktops.

it's at the top of the list because I sorted the list by name and scrolled
The list should show the install date really...

This looks like exactly what I need

Being as it's a daemon, if I want to just have it in the background for firefox could I install the .pet and then add

earlyoom &

onto the start of the .desktop script that opens firefox?
