In the U.S., a Gauss rifle was launched for sale - $3750.

Until recently, the Gauss rifle was fantastic. Such weapons have only been featured in sci-fi fiction, films, and numerous computer games. The popular Fallout series of games brought great fame to the weapon :)

Structurally, any Gaussian cannon consists of a solenoid, inside which a barrel (usually made of a dielectric) is placed. A special projectile is inserted into one of the ends of the barrel, which is made of ferromagnet. At the moment the electric current flows in the solenoid, an electromagnetic field appears, which accelerates the projectile.

The American company Arcflash Labs has announced that it has become the first and so far the only company in the world to create a hand-held Gauss rifle capable of firing steel projectiles. The weapon received the designation GR-1 ANVIL. In this case, we are talking about hand-held weapons, and not a stationary installation. True, the cost of an electromagnetic rifle can scare off a number of buyers. The device is priced at $ 3,750. When pre-ordering, the company is ready to provide customers with a 10 percent discount - $ 3,375 :)

The GR-1 rifle is capable of accelerating ferromagnetic projectiles up to a speed of 75 m/s. The rate of fire of the weapon is estimated at 100 rounds per minute. The capacity of standard magazines is 10 ammunition. At the same time, the used 6S LiPo battery provides the shooter with 40 shots per charge. The manufacturer claims that three main types of projectiles can be used with the GR-1 rifle: 32, 42 and 52 mm. Arcflash Labs recommends using for this purpose the magnetic armature 1232, 1242E or 1252 of its own production. For example, a 10 pack of 1232 ammunition costs $ 11.5. But any steel rod, fastener or dowel pin with a diameter of 11 to 12.6 mm and a length of 30 to 52 mm will also work. You can find similar products at hardware stores :) But the manufacturer does not recommend doing this and declines responsibility for damage to the device or injuries sustained when using third-party fittings.

In fact, in the dimensions of many modern sniper rifles, the user receives a weapon weighing more than 9 kg. At the same time, the capabilities of the rifle, although they surpass modern models of traumatic weapons, came close only to small-caliber small arms.

75 meters per second isn't very fast for a bullet.

Ideas are old, details are new

The idea of such devices is not new. Not just an idea, but also working models. Let me give you an example.

Solenoid guns were even assembled by Soviet pioneers and schoolchildren. I have a book from 1955 of the last century (it seems that the book even smells like 1955, somehow interesting :) ). It is called "For a young electrical technician":

Here you are.
Solenoid cannon available to the Soviet pioneer. Instead of a cannon, it was also proposed to make a pistol. It was necessary to shoot... no, not at the damned capitalists :) , but at the target - the silhouette of a tank:

In addition, there were models of a solenoid road, caskets with a secret magnetic lock, and transformers.
There's a lot more to it.

And batteries.

Indeed, it's less than the speed of an arrow fired from a modern compound bow (300+ feet/sec)

Right. Subj can be compared with modern crossbows and old bows.

The speed and energy of an arrow fired from an English longbow is 55 m/s and 100 Joules. And the English bow is a serious thing, the French knights would confirm. Modern crossbows are even cooler.

The conclusions are as follows. Too lethal for a toy, too confusing for a weapon. Suitable only for recreational shooting at close range. But this is for now.
