Missing Icons in Thunar [SOLVED]

Post by JASpup »

Anyone happen to know why Thunar icons are missing in Tahr JWM?

Icon areas outlined in blue. Under DEVICES they are eject (unmount) buttons.

I think you're onto the process, but it wasn't this specific change:

[Settings]
gtk-theme-name = Ambiance
gtk-icon-theme-name = Puppy Standard
gtk-fallback-icon-theme = gnome
gtk-sound-theme-name = ubuntu
gtk-icon-sizes = panel-menu-bar=24,24

Interestingly I see a difference in icon appearance in the URL bar depending on the directory I choose.

/usr/share/icons doesn't show any indication of being Puppy Standard or much more than lower res generic app icons - some but not much - nor the type breakdown in the hicolor sub-directories:

Code: Select all

root# ls -l
total 1
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 3 Dec 15 2015 actions
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 3 Dec 15 2015 animations
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 1024 Apr 9 2014 apps
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 3 Dec 15 2015 categories

et cetera

This is my /usr/share/icons/ folder, I see Puppy Standard, Tango and Puppy Flat icon themes.

I don't have the line referring to "fallback" icons in my /etc/gtk-3.0/settings.ini file
. You could try Tango (or any other theme you have installed in your /usr/share/icons/ folder ) in that setting.

You could try to use other theme. I'm using the Puppy Standard as mentioned in the thread I've linked, but for sure some icons are missing in some apps. I can't tell for sure.

Are you suggesting icons are not showing in Thunar because I don't have the all the icons in the set?

Truth is, this goes with a second problem of partition access: http://forum.puppylinux.com/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=3670

I can only get partitions in Tahr JWM, or XFCE, or by using Pipzdex's overwrought PCmanFM (I just want pup-volume-monitor). Partitions are more serious.

I won't use Thunar without partition access, and then I'll worry about icons again, but if you have the answer that will be helpful knowledge for the community.

I do not know how to use alternate gtk icon-themes in JWM. I see them in the other DEs.

I can't tell you about Thunar, since I only use the built in Rox file manager in my Bionic32, Bionic64 and Tahrpup32 installs.

But it seems that when an icon is missing, the reason is the icon not present in the icons theme folder.

If you look at my second post in this thread (third overall after yours), that is the same icon missing and present in the same run with nothing different installed (the title bar color difference is the window selected or not).

Maybe it's possible the navigation box is looking for a different icon.

I've downloaded the "WhiteSur" icon theme, then installed in my /usr/share/icons/ folder, and tried it. Seems it has more icons available.

You can try it and see if the problem persists.

What beyond copying the new theme to the directory would you do to make Thunar use the icons in JWM?

Again, this is just Tahr 32, because Xenial won't show partitions.

After extracting the icon theme to the mentioned icons folder,

Open the file /etc/gtk-3.0/settings.ini
Edit the line to gtk-icon-theme-name = YOUR_NEW_ICON_THEME (spell exactly the icon folder's name, in my case WhiteSur)
Make sure you have all the correct spaces and upper case letters.
Save the edited file
Restart X server

(quoted from the other thread I've mentioned)

@fernan tested with no change.

The icon theme in Thunar stays the same as set in the Puppy Icon Switcher, in my Tahr case JQ8raised, with missing icons like root.

Are these 3.0 themes the alt-desktop environment ones, like Papirus?

Do you know if this version of Thunar is using GTK3 or GTK2?
Editing the file mentioned above is only for GTK3

The overall icon theme switcher (i.e., the one that controls pinboard desktop icons) is the same theme being partially applied in Thunar.

GTK2 control the windows, e.g., Raleigh, Numix, Emacs, Stardust, etc., and I know icons are associated, but how that all comes together?

That icon theme switcher is for the pinboard and JWM Menu icons, it does not set the GTK+2 icons as far as I know. If your Thunar is GTK+2 you will probably need to configure the icon theme by editing /root/.gtkrc.mine
If you have installed an icon theme named "WhiteSur"
Then add:-
gtk-icon-theme-name = "WhiteSur"
to that file and restart X
I am not in Tahr at the moment so not sure what is already there or if the GUI programs have any control over the gtk-icon-theme-name but a manual edit is easy and should work if done correctly.

EDIT:- OK, a little later, now in fresh boot of 32bit Tahr.
/root/.gtkrc.mine has gtk-icon-theme-name="ROX"
so obviously change the "ROX" to "WhiteSur" or whatever the installed theme name is. Then restart X
The version of JWMDesk Manager in Tahr does not appear to have GTK icon theme switching. I think later versions do.

That was it. Thunar in Tahr is really refreshing. I can only think of needing Pmount to mount partitions at boot.

WhiteSur + -dark combined are almost 25mb, but they have a nice look to them.
