Questions about installing Slacko to USB and will the trackpad work?

Post by tredI9100 »

Hey everyone, I have a few questions about Puppy Linux, specifically Slacko 5.7.
The first one is that I'm planning on installing to a USB from a freshly burnt CD, but I want to know if it will modify anything on my internal HDD or other stuff. I'm planning on taking this with me as a sort of personal system.
The second one is that my laptop is a Thinkpad T430s, and I'm not sure whether the trackpad and/or trackpoint will work.
Thank you! :thumbup:

Hi, I'm Tred, and I do stuff.

Hi tred,

Booting from usb will not modify anything on the hdd. I have used many puppy versions on several thinkpads from p3 cpus to I5's. Both the trackpoint and pad work without any configuration required. If you use the trackpoint a lot you may need to adjust the speed and dynamics settings which are not easy to find in some puppies. The best trackpoint responding puppy OOTB I've found is fossapup64 9.5.

That laptop should be able to run the latest versions of Puppy Linux.

Why do you want to use such an old version of Puppy (slacko 5.7)?

The things you do not tell us, are usually the clue to fixing the problem.
When I was a kid, I wanted to be older.
This is not what I expected :o

@bigpup offers good advice for a PC that has the Thinkpad T430 power.

The newer PUPs have merely made new apps available as they are upgrades of the old PUPs.

If you want to test a couple of new PUPs without touching your PCs current storage (HDD/SSD) checkout this safe solution allowing you to evaluate a couple of them. A mere 15 minutes of your time and your USB stick and you'll be running one of the PUPs it offers.

@Clarity

Since the OP is taking this with him as his personal system, the target computers he connects to may not have the power of the T430 and thinks that 5.7 would be a better choice for those. Even then I would chose a newer pup.
