Focal fossa64 black screen on usb boot

Post by Logan57 »

Hi my hardisk failed recently so I write fossa pup on Usb with rufus with default setting but it shows black screen.while Googleing about this issue I read that rufus default setting iso mode is wrong so I select second mode but it shows this

Booting `find /menu.lst, /boot/grub/menu.lst, /grub/menu.lst'

Minimal BASH-like line editing is supported. For the first word, TAB
lists possible command completions. Anywhere else TAB lists possible
completions of a device/filename. ESC at any time exits.

Your problem and its solution is discussed on this thread. viewtopic.php?p=16266#p16266.
Basically, the problem with rufus is that --although it will create a boot-able Fossapup64 USB-Key-- that key will be formatted as ISO9660 which will not accept a SaveFile/Folder: You can't preserve settings, customizations, or install other applications.
But you can use that boot-able Fossapup64 for create a 2nd USB-Key:
Use its builtin gparted to format the 2nd key so that it will have a small Fat32 FIRST partition and the rest of the key formatted as Linux Ext3 to hold Fossapup64, its SaveFile/Folder and anything else.

Fossapup64 has Frugalpup-Installer built in. See this thread and its links, viewtopic.php?p=171#p171 for instructions. Its GUI is reasonably intuitive. About the only suggestion I'd add is that after formatting the 2nd partition, before running Frugalpup-installer, Right-Click an empty space on that 2nd partition, select New>Directory and give it a meaningful name, e.g. Fossapup. That will enable you to avoid having to do so while running Frugalpup which asks you to identify such folder and offers to create it if it doesn't exist; then instructs you to select it before pressing Enter. Creating the folder in advance avoid any confusion. [There are versions newer than builtin to Fossapup64. But its version is up to the task you want to do].

However, from Windows, you might want to first try USBImager. See this post, viewtopic.php?p=21506#p21506 and the one following it.

The black screen thing.

Here is where specific details are important.
Do you boot with the Fossapup USB and see a boot menu?
Do you select the first entry?
Do you see any information as it boots?
If yes.

It is probably a graphics driver issue.
There are some added boot command options to get around the issue.

In the boot menu you see.
Look for this entry:
"fossapup64 9.5 - No KMS (Kernel modesetting)"
Try using that one to boot.

Need to know what graphics hardware the computer uses.
Make and model of computer if you do not know the specs.
We can look up the computers specs.

The things you do not tell us, are usually the clue to fixing the problem.
When I was a kid, I wanted to be older.
This is not what I expected :o
