hi all,
tried bionic puppy 32bit on an Intel Pentium III from Gateway model D810 desktop,
512MB ram, VGA ... installation seemed like it was going to work ok,
all daemons started ok,
... then it switched to a dark screen, and zap ... nothing
sounds like it was searching for a video card ?
i tried other versions of linux 32 bit apps, they boot ok, no problem,
graphics are a bit chunky (800x600?) but ok ...
any hints as to other puppies to try ?
Whew, a P III??? Ok, that old CPU is going to be a challenge, but you might find one of the older Slacko Puppies
satisfactory, in regards to most things...web browsing will be a challenge due to limited RAM and lack of SSE.

puppy shell # comes up ok
xview won't start, loads for a while,
black screen, no action
any hints ? it says there is a 'graphics wizard'
but can't find it ... looks like xview can't
find the graphics adapter drivers or finds something
that doesn't work
PIII has SSE ...it's 'only' 20 yrs old ...

Sometime ago I made a Bionic Pup with a retro series 3 kernel try this:

As above, an older pup is possibly better suited, Wary comes to mind....
But, if you boot to a prompt, you could run

xorgwizardto choose your video settings
If you can get to running xorgwizard.
Select vesa for the driver to use.

A PIII does have SSEs, so browsing will be possible, though not perhaps terribly brilliant. We do know of one SSE-only browser - Pale Moon 27.9.4 - though I doubt YouTube will work. Should be OK for general browsing though.
Darren, your 4.3.1 "Phoenix" re-spin would run the SSE-only Pale Moon, I think? Might that not be a better fit for this machine?
I seem to recall we found no end of stuff that would work with it, after digging around in Ally's archives for a while.....

thx bigpup, xorgwizard runs ok,
vesa, 800x600, 16 bit ...
xwin/Xorg seems to start, screen turns black, no ctrl-c,
no way to stop it, hard reset next ...
is Xorg the only gi on this version ?
looks like Xorg was compiled for i686,
could that be the reason ? ... PIII is i586 ?
kernel # commands ok, any other options
other than what was suggested trying earlier versions ?

xorg can't connect to server, can't find the graphics display ...
pup 19.03 does not install a display for some reason,
finds the intel bridge 82801 and all other devices install ok, kb, usb, mouse, etc,
display rez is 0x0, name is null, some is missing ...
but what ?

i did, tried all settings, vesa, low rez, etc,
no go, xwin starts, screen goes blank ...
is there a kb shortcut to exit xwin ?
kernel keeps running it seems ...

May be for you? 10 years ago I used on Compaq with PIII 600 ~ 1000 MHz (I don't remember details) and no more memory than 512 MB precise-5.7.1. Download generic precise-5.7.1.iso.

Probably a driver or firmware missing.
Look in the program menu->System->Boot Manager->Modules tab->Add new module
See if it lists the module for Intel 82801BA ICH2 or CS40201 that you could choose to load.
Look in the Blacklist module
See if maybe one of these is getting blacklisted.
Un-blacklist if you find one.

there are paremeters at boot-time to give puppy.
for Puppy 4.12 Linux 3.9.11 [i686 arch] grub has in his menu.lst:
-> title PuppyDEas008pre1 (sda3/full)
-> root (hd0,2)
-> kernel /boot/vmlinuz root=/dev/sda3 ahci=on uhci=on ehci=on noacpi
ahci uhci ehci = USB
good try is noacpi
Didn't test if precise an newer puppies accept these paremeters.
And, there maybe also parameters for graphic

I have an old Windows 2000 military laptop with similar specs.
When I ran Puppy on it, I used Lucid 5.28, which is the version right before Precise (which is updated as Precise Light and already recommended above).

Consider a text based browswer like links2 for simple text based browsing along with whatever else you decide to use. It will be much faster.
