Bionicpup64 8.0 doesn't mount USB Drive

Yes another question, I don't think this should be a problem but somehow it is - the OS doesn't mount a perfectly working usb drive in a working usb port which I tested on Ubuntu. I'm still running Bionic on a VM and I of course allowed USB passthrough with the correct USB stick. I then used various commands like usb-devices, blkid, lsusb, etc. and it does detect it exists so then I try and mount it and it gives me "can't find device in /etc/fstab" I searched the folder "mnt" in root and sdb1 and nothing. I need some files off of it for some other problem I'm troubeshooting .

Probably unrelated, but I've noticed a similar kind of issue in Bionic64.

I always use pWidgets on the desktop, and in Bionic64 I've got the "Space_drives" widget running, amongst others. Despite that sdb2 is auto-mounted at boot, pWidgets drive-space widget stubbornly reports it as unmounted....

Perhaps there could be a common 'root' cause here, I don't know......

Saved and rebooted, so new changes are now being used?

What format is the USB drive partition?

Does Pmount see it?

When you plug the USB in.
Does a drive icon come up on the desktop?

Puppy Event Manager
Activate tab.
Both options selected?
Rox Icons Tab.
options to show desktop icons for drives selected along with show partitions?

I could try XenialPup to see if usb stick is detected on its VM but I hesitate to even load that since the mouse pointer is off by two inches for some reason. I tried loading the driver and still it remained.

I saw your desktop in another thread and its amazing, it gave me a renewed boost to keep moving forward . If I get the hang of this I'll love tinkering it.

This is a small question that I don't want a separate thread for, now that I think of it, why does "root:3" in jwm shortcuts mean open the puppy start menu? I suspect its related to Xlib.

EDIT: Oh my goodness, not only was it mounted as Pmount showed, but I check the desktop and at the bottom there it is as sdb1 *facepalm* . It shows all the files now but the strange thing is I searched the mnt folder and sdb1 wasn't there until I opened sdb1 from the desktop...why is that?

The icon on bottom of screen is a link to the mount point. Clicking it mounts the partition (/dev/sdb1) to the mount point /mnt/sdb1. So you don't see the contents of the drive until it is mounted.

If you look at the icons on the bottom of the screen, in the top right corner there may be a second embeded symbol. The Home partition displays a little home symbol, that is there always, as the Home partiton is always mounted and can't be unmounted. The other drive mount points may have a little indicator, which is only displayed when the associated drive is mounted. If you click this indicator, it will generally unmount the partition. The unmount won't occur if items contained within this drive are mounted/open.

/mnt/ directory may have identified devices in it.
Think of those as pre-listed devices, that are going to be mounted at some time.
Kind of saved identifiers for the device.
when you mount a device partition, it shows in /mnt/ and the file system can see it.
If you are navigating in the file system.
Mounted drives can be accessed in /mnt/
When you unmount a device. /mnt/ may still keep the identifier for future use, if that device is mounted again.

Puppy does not, by default, auto-mount any device, but the one the Puppy files are on.
that is the biggest reason for the desktop drive icons.
Simply click on one to mount it.
Simply click on icon unmount symbol, to unmount.

You can setup Pmount options, to auto-mount a drive partition, on boot up.
Run Pmount.
Click on a listed drive partition small black arrow.
Select mount partition at boot.

Just to add to what bigpup said, when in /mnt not only will you see 'directories' that show nothing when clicked-on (because there's nothing there; at that moment in time, nothing is plugged-in & "occupying" that particular mount-point), but you will also see a few of these have a small green dot on them. These are the ones that are mounted and in use by Puppy.....and are the ones that will actually show on the desktop.

(As for the desktop, umm....it's not everybody's 'cup of tea', y'know! Many like their desktops to be quiet, peaceful places. Me, I've always liked a 'busy' desktop; graphics design is a long-standing hobby of mine, and I take the view that if I'm the one who has to look at it every day then I may as well make it an enjoyable experience...

What your desktop looks like is only limited by your imagination.)
