Porteus-v5.0rc3 is released

On behalf of the Porteus dev team, I'm happy to announce the release of Porteus version 5.0-RC3.
Almost a year after RC2, both 32bit and 64bit versions of the 7 flavors are now available.
You can download the releases at any of our mirrors in the Porteus-v5.0 folder of your desired arch(x86_64 or i586).

This move towards retiring gtkdialog is very wise in my opinion despite how relatively convenient gtkdialog remains for creating frontend GUIs. It is not anything like an active enough well-maintained project - it is simply in a kept "hanging in there" status. However, the problem remains that of finding a truly suitable replacement, that is simple enough to learn and use; I do not myself think pygobject is likely to fill that bill. Personally, I rather like IupLua since it is well-established, cross-platform, and the code form is relatively similar in structure to a typical gtkdialog layout (without the tags) along with a yad-lookalike element. Nevertheless, I understand the reluctance generally to leave gtkdialog, and also doubts about IupLua - been around for a long time but not exactly what I'd call 'mainstream' (not that gtkdialog was ever mainstream - yad, being closer to that status but unfortunately yad is more than a bit limited).
Porteus itself is pretty nice. I've dabbled with it in the distant past (and DebianDog utilises a modified version of its initrd so I'm familiar with some of the boot cheatcodes). However, I'm not at all a Slackware fan - its package format is simple enough but I find Slackware package management system somewhat inferior (its well known lack of automatic dependency resolution, for example - unless that has changed in recent years?) compared to the likes of Arch Linux's pacman, or Debian's dpkg/apt, or Void's xbps.

The biggest little ones, I think, are:
1. AntiX
2. Puppy
3. Porteus
AntiX shines with its look and feel.
Porteus is always proud of its size and "boot" speed.
However, at the end of the day, usability is what matters. How to get your things done, produced, etc.
Puppy is simply more balanced, multi-dimensional, and all around package for now.
