Windows update messed up Lick bootloader.

Post by J_D_ »

Windows update totally messed up my Lick bootloader. Lick makes things so fast and easy I can not imagine using any thing else. Ive been using Lick for a couple years so I'd have to figure all that out again. Used Windows 10 without updating for about a year. I finally gave in to the notices and did an update last week.  After screwing around with different browsers I decided to do a fresh install of my Puppy. Opened Lick and uninstalled my old Puppies and tried to install a fresh one. Tried about 10 times and failed. Finally reverted my Windows 10 back to my old version and did the Puppy install. Rant over. Mostly just posting to warn others. Do not update Windows.

To "permanently" turn off Windows' telemetry and its automatic updates, download and run WindowsSpyBlocker.

Select 1,2, and 3.

I can just stop the updates in thee control panel. Just have to redo it every 35 days.

As far as I remember, only WSB does work. No redo necessary!
But if you ran option 1 & 2, all Microsoft-owned sites will be inaccessible; including is msn.com

Are you using the latest version of Lick?
v1.3.4
https://github.com/noryb009/lick/releases

Well, this does seem to be a recently reported issue on the Lick web site.
https://github.com/noryb009/lick/issues/40

feature called 'Fast Startup'. This cannot be enabled if LICK is installed. LICK disables Fast Startup upon installation.

Is fast startup still disabled after the Windows update?

The things you do not tell us, are usually the clue to fixing the problem.
When I was a kid, I wanted to be older.
This is not what I expected :o

I did install the latest Lick. Definitely not a Lick problem. Fast start up did not work after the update.
After going back to the old Windows 10, I had to run Lick and install my puppies again. Now I have about 8 Fossapups and 2 Xenials on the Lick menu. Only one of each boots. Can I edit some of those out ? Also, just asking, not complaining. Lick and Puppy are are the best.

I do not know the particulars of Lick, however ...
From a Puppy you should find a efi/boot fat32 partition. Windows will not allow you looking there.
You should find grub installed in it. You should look there for grub.cfg.
In it you should find multiple entries for your pups.
It could also be some other .cfg file. Several .cfg files could refer to each other.
I do not know how to determine which entry works. Maybe use the title of the entries for this.

Do any editing from a running Puppy version.

This may be what you want to know about editing the menu.
https://oldforum.puppylinux.com/viewtop ... e1#p991669

When you open the lickgrub.cfg file in a text editor.
Should be able to delete any extra entries not needed.

I also experienced the same thing. I can't reinstall my LICK after a "blue screen" occurs on the main OS (Windows 7). On reboot the system automatically performs "Startup Repair". And what happened I couldn't boot LICK (Xenialpup65-7.5) again. Finally I reinstalled LICK on my Windows 7 but an error occurred "lick-fltk.exe has stopped working".
Anyone can help me?
Thank you.
Greetings from a new Puppy Linux user in Indonesia.
