To be clear, it appears that only My Book Live devices are affected. These are network-attached-storage devices that are connected to your system via Ethernet cable.
This issue does not affect ordinary My Book devices, which connect to your system via USB and are merely external hard drives, not NAS devices.

I'm glad I don't use that system.
What a fright though... I thought for a moment someone was complaining about some unknown WeeDog Linux variant I had never heard of: "WD MyBook"...! But I'd have called it "WDL_MyBook" anyway so if I ever publish that one please remember to unplug it from the internet

I had one, which failed about 5 years ago. I thought it was really buggy and was geared for Windows.
Glad it's long gone.
