Firefox 79 (Precise 5.7.1) Updated!

Hi forum

WARNING!!
This is the last version who work without any problem in precise, newer version doesn't work for a problem with gtk version...
SO.. don't upgrade more of this version...
If you have a newer version working or you know who have it, please coment me to know how is posible... thanks!

Sharing this two version of firefox 79 working in puppy precise 5.7.1, finally the problem about the audio is gone!...
the first is a pet to be installed ffrom zero

WARNING!! both version are tested only in precise, I do not guarantee that it will work in other recent versions or maybe it could cause a little problem ...
Important note: for this version of Firefox to work, glibc must be updated to a version greater than 2.17, luckily for us, this update is in the Mike Walsh repositories and here I share it ==> https://drive.google.com/file/d/1uyjN1F ... sp=sharing <==
Update Glibc first and then install the pet or add the sfs and that's it ..

Do be aware that although I packed this glibc stuff into a tarball, and mirrored it, credit for the original very firmly lies with battleshooter. One of only a handful of lasses on the Puppy Forums, yet along with Jemimah an important contributor of extremely useful software.

Originally assembled to enable Chrome in Saluki & Racy 5.5, it nearly got lost when meownplanet went tits-up a few years ago. Ally & Russoodle between them rescued a lot of stuff before it disappeared for good, though the archives were a bit jumbled up, being essentially left in whatever order they were grabbed in. I found this worked a treat, so I put all the relevant individual files together, together with a short 'READ-ME' explaining the order they had to be installed in.

I'm glad others are still finding them useful...!

About Glibc I know that it is the work of another colleague, but at the time I did not remember who the compiler was ...
Thank you for reminding me and giving immediate credit to battleshooter, from whom personally copying the scheme that has its packages I have tested Glibc 2.27 in precise Linux, hoping that it works without any problem, it is still in the testing stage, at least for now it works ...

OK brief first post.
I have used the forum for a few years now as a guest.
I use precise 5.7.1 on a Dell P4 laptop as my everyday device,
Many thanks to all of the contributors who have helped keep my precise online.
Recently I have noticed that the banks are getting twitchy about Firefox 78esr also the latest seamonkey 25.3 and palemoon 29.2.1.
So i felt I was approaching a crisis point and would have to junk perfectly useable hardware.
As I always run puppy as a live cd I was able to do much research and testing without crashing an installed system.
So I have to report that I am posting this using Firefox 89.0.2 in a live session of precise 5.7.1.
See attached screenshot.
I have never had any luck with precise in playing online videos so I cannot comment on whether the audio works. The codecs are too ancient.
I want to carry out a little more testing and I will post again showing how I set it all up.

The simplified version

After much trial and error this is what appears to work.
From messing about with palemoon I knew that slackware packages installed and ran.
So I used slackware 14.1
Note that Glib also needs updating due to to changed requirements for function calls after version 2,35, newer applications no longer being backwards compatible.

Firefox 80 did not work.
Firefox 87 did and updated to 89

first, thanks for helping keep precise 571 current.
i installed it on an imac several years after trying
other candidates, then running 571 as a live dvd for
awhile. great os.

second, pipsdex, when you speak of installing the
ffox79 pet from zero, what do you mean by zero?
also, is the adrv.sfs to be loaded before first run of ffox?
the ffox.pet said it could not be installed. i did not
try to download the adrv.sfs.

third, mikewalsh, only the glibc2.27 upgrade pets,
steps 1-4, would install. the 2.30 upgrade set all
failed to install. i run precise 571, so ignored the racy set.
i assumed that the numbering of the steps meant the
readme was not needed.

fourth, waxman, the slack and deb items downloaded,
installed. i found my way to a page of older versions of
firefox, where there were a number of 80's: 80; 80ob1;
through 80ob8 or 9 before the version number changed.

i chose 80ob7. d-loaded, installed but i cannot start it.
in the displayed files, there is a gear icon. when i click
on it the familiar rectangle flashes around it but nothing
happens. files show as executable in properties also i
clicked exec in permissions.

when i open a terminal window in that folder, then enter
'firefox' it opens the version which i'm already using, 52,
though i had closed it when i finished downloading.

full disclosure: i have not run any checksums on any item
i have mentioned. i know their value & how to run them.
my keyboard and mouse are a bit better than my eyesight.
if asked to go back and do sums i will understand.

Those Firefox builds with a "b" in the version are usually, 'beta', 'nightly' builds. They alter virtually every 24 hrs or so, and they're known to be unstable. They're only for interim testing to provide feedback for the dev team.

When you open a terminal in a specific window, it still won't execute any command from that window unless you preface that with "./". If you don't, it will just search the normal $PATHs as usual, and execute what it finds there, i.e., your existing install of Firefox.

So; instead of

firefox

....when you "open a terminal window here", enter

Code: Select all

./firefox

This will execute the specified binary.

I think there is an issue with firefox 80. I have read other posts in other forums about ff80 not loading in other linux distros. I did not get ff80 to run but that may be due to minor differences in my updated precise.
Try ff87 it worked for me.
mikewalsh is correct, do not use versions with letters appended after them.

Just to clarify my simplified version post.
It was updated from a remastered iso set up to run ff78esr but would also run ff79.
That already had been updated to gtk3-3.4.2 using mikewalsh pet.
Also updated;
to glibc2.22
and added
glib-2.0_schemas.pet and
libdbus-precise.pet

I download the tarball from firefox extract and place the resulting firefox folder in say Downloads.

Left click the folder to open it and left click firefox to run.

Alternatively if testing I will type the following in the terminal.

/root/Downloads/firefox/firefox -safe-mode

This will either start firefox or list an error in oreder to debug it.

Just to confirm that sound is now working in ff89.0.2.
After adding the apulse pet by oscar talks - apulse-0.1.10-i686-wz.pet.
This is using the extracted tarball from firefox and opening the folder and running firefox.

I don't understand this thread, very confusing. In the thread a poster claims he is posting with Precise running Firefox 89 (now that will be great) but elsewhere it's about Firefox 79 that works with Precise (I'm aware that version 79 works). Does Firefox version 89 also work with Precise, I'll be surprised...?

I see you got Firefox 89 running but not Firefox 80 (strange). Anyways, I would love to get version 89 going if possible. I have upgrades of glibc 2.27 and 2.30 at my disposal. How should I proceed from there to definitely get Firefox 89 working with Precise? Download links for the files you mention here please.

This is an important thread with a user claiming he got Firefox 89 32-bit version running with Precise. The upgrade steps are not clear to me. Has someone else got version 89 going with Precise and the specific steps taken please...this waxman poster does not seem to respond or actively post on the forum. Thanks.

I have an experimental KLV-Airedale 32 bit version that goes fast........ AND it runs the very latest Firefox 109 in a 32 bit version.

So I am wondering what if we took the Void Linux 32 bit Firefox package and see if I can get that to run in Precise. Will look at the major library upgrades that might need to be done for the Precise 5.7.1 platform. I have gotten lucky many times swapping around pieces of Void and Puppy within each other and that working.......

That will be great rockedge. It's really hard to get a late version of Firefox working with Precise. For starters one has to upgrade glibc and also install a gtk3 package (this is the easy part).

I suggest my version here: viewtopic.php?p=67697#p67697. The old glibc has been removed and newer glibc and gtk3 are provided as additional drives. Do the necessary amendments as mentioned in that first post. It runs the latest Palemoon and Seamonkey but I couldn't get Firefox nor Chromium to work. Haven't tested other browsers.

Not been logged in for a while - family issues have got in the way for a few months.

I will try and catch up with this thread.
I am posting this from my precuse 5.7.1 updated using firefox 91.9,1 esr..
Just jappens to be what is burnt into the cd.
I only run puppy as a live cd.
So every time I do an upgrade I have to create a new iso which then gets burnt to cd.
So it all gets done in steps over a period of time

There are 2 issues which are not help[ful for further upgrades.
Some of the older forum posts have disapeared which would have explained some pf my early updates.
Launchpad has removed the 32bit files and dependancy info.

So to get ff87 working you could take the version of ff79 at the start of this thread and add in the files I mentioned on page 1. Give it a try. Then you have to do a further upgrade for ff91esr. More on that in another post.

At the moment my precise 5.7.1 updated will run ff91.13esr, poirtable palemoon 31.3,0.1, seamonkey 2.53.15, and newmoon 32.0.1. I have not had any luck with Chromium or FF100 series.

@amethyst if the forum allows pm me an address or just postcode and house number and I could post you the working precise+ff91.9.1 live cd. That may be easier. That version is bombproof as far as I know. The base puppy was precise5.7.1no-pae.

As a matter of interest - how big is your Precise base file after your updates (uncompressed) that will give me an idea what you had to add to get Firefox going? The idea is to get a later Firefox running with minimal upgrade to the system (let's allow for about 10MB extra) otherwise it's not really worth it. I can run the latest Palemoon and Firefox 79 (I think) with my upgraded version of Precise. This is basically just a glibc upgrade (the small stripped version) and added GTK3 libraries. Anyways I'm using Bionic 32 almost all of the time now.

There are probably some redundant files in there but I have not felt the need to clear them out.
The reason I am persisting with precise is because of how snappy it is on my older hardware.
I also use xenial but as I always run live cd's I find that xenial does not allocate the oersonal storage correctly to my eyes. When first loaded although the personal storage is 1gb only 684mb is available as an example..
Then I have tried bionic and find when I try to print out of a web page to pdf, (which I do often), the browser crashes and bionic crashes and reboots. As a live cd somewhat irritating so I have left bionic alone.
I am also trying out every 32bit puppy I can find on 3 laptops abd 1 desktop to try out as many browsers as possible. Then I run into driver issues and puppies not installing properly.

This is because your base sfs and kernel is copied to RAM at bootup when working with a live-CD. This takes up space of your personal storage. You can boot with the pfix=nocopy parameter in which case the whole system won't be copied (you can edit the applicable line at bootup) but then your operation will be slower because the system needs to read from CD every time you access something (but you will have more personal storage space). I use Bionic with an old kernel (Tahr's kernel) on my old machine. BTW - it will be useful if you can make your iso available (actually, only the base sfs) WITHOUT the inclusion of the 3 browsers. Have you tried to get the newest Firefox ESR going? The other thing is that I haven't been using the Firefox ESR versions (as I understand it the ESR versions are normally a bit "behind the times"). Maybe I should download Firefox 91 ESR first and try it with my upgraded version of Precise.

Yes the experimental version in the post above was ff102.4esr, But in order to do that some features become disabled. So more work to do.

Trying to get FF99esr to work requires GTK3-3.10,8.

I will try to sort out a cleaned up sfs.

I'm posting this from Firefox 110.1 running in 32-bit Tahrpup, guys (6.0.6, NOT 6.0.5). I mean, let's be honest; Tahrpup was the very next Puppy up the ladder from Precise; not very much heavier, actually still supported now till next year (2014->10 yrs support->2024).....and this is in fact running natively in Tahrpup now. I haven't even had to pull the chroot stunt and run it from Xenial!

Quite impressive, to my mind. I've been watching LinusTechTips most of the evening on YouTube; smooth as so much oiled silk, all the way. I'm not complaining....especially given that I've had something of a love/hate relationship with FF all the years since I first started using it way back around 2004/5. If only FF had been this stable all those years ago, I might never have gone over to Chrome & the 'clones'. As it is, it tends to get used as a 'standby' browser most of the time, although given that the final 32-bit 'legacy' builds of Slimjet & Vivaldi are getting somewhat long in the tooth and decidedly 'creaky' now, I may even switch to this & SeaMonkey full-time for Tahrpup.....

And for me, THAT is saying something. I don't know whether 32 GB RAM, and an Nvidia card with the official driver has anything to do with it, but I've got something of a soft spot for Tahrpup. It WAS the very first Puppy I used full-time for more than two years, and was never anything less than 100% rock-solid.
