I was looking at old notes when I was experimenting scanner with puppies few years ago.
Thru synaptic, I didn't see sane/xsane scanner, epkowa driver, etc in StretchDog/FossaDog.
Are they not available in StretchDog/FossaDog, or do you have to add additional repo list in sources.list file?

I ended up using Epson ImageScan for scanning.

I downloaded 2 packages (Debian 9, Debian 10 - 64 bit) from:
https://support.epson.net/linux/en/imagescanv3.php
Tested on StretchDog, BusterDog, Bullseye (all from scratch - new/empty change dir).
On StretchDog - Debian 9, installation was easy, smooth and worked without problem. 
On BusterDog - Debian 10, installation was easy, smooth and worked. But upon reboot there is problem. You can't login...X doesn't work anymore.
I think the problem was that during installation, the script removed packages that it said 'no longer required'. How do you stop/modify script to leave unused packages alone?
On Bullseye - "Debian 11 (?)" - installation failed, both packages (9&10). Missing dependencies. Similar behavior if you install Debian 9 package on BusterDog. How do you solve these missing dependencies?

Weird that it removes so many essential packages ! (e.g. all xserver-xorg-...)
I will investigate more in the next days, it could be that there's a problem with the custom repository (libeudev1 should provide libudev1) not sure yet.
To workaround, you may want to try installing libudev1 with aptitude (install aptitude first if not already), I tried that and it doesn't remove the whole bunch of packages like apt does.

EDIT: Btw, I like aptitude because gives you choices what to do.
For Bullseye there's no .deb yet, so need to wait for that after Bullseye becomes the stable branch.

I did real-run, not dry-run since all are scratch test setup. I had 3 BusterDog test setup (mklive-buster) -> minimal, Chrome, Chrome+nVidia.
After installing these:
apt install aptitude
aptitude install libudev1
In BusterDog minimal, imagescan-bundle installer didn't remove anything.
In BusterDog Chrome, imagescan-bundle installer didn't remove anything either.
Imagescan still installs, and works. But reboot still failed, like it was before.
BUT during "aptitude install libudev1", packages were removed/substituted depending on which choice you chose.
So, it looks like the packages removal/substitution just got pre-empted before imagescan-bundle installer.
It looks like it's not 'really' imagescan-bundle installer, but rather "install libudev1" that kicked off the event.
Two choices during "install libudev1" (which seem to be the key of reboot failing)

Thanks for your reports, yes problematic install of libudev1.
Should be fixed now, (no need to install with aptitude), pls test and report back.
I've added new versions of eudev and libeudev1 to the custom repos for Buster, Bullseye and Sid.
Also added udev and libudev1 packages (these have priority over the standard Debian packages), which are just transitional packages for eudev and libeudev1. (this is following the way that Devuan handles it, eudev provides udev)
EDIT:
In BusterDog minimal, imagescan-bundle installer didn't remove anything.
In BusterDog Chrome, imagescan-bundle installer didn't remove anything either.
Imagescan still installs, and works. But reboot still failed, like it was before.
Mmm... can't explain why it won't boot if there are no packages removed. Perhaps best to start with fresh save then and it will install the new libudev1.
EDIT2: You should never let this happen, it terribly breaks the (X) system (just saying btw, it won't be anymore with the new udev and eudev):

Just an observation from my own experience.

I've never run anything BUT Epson printers & scanners. There's always been the issue that, even with an 'all-in-one', you STILL need to install separate printer/scanner driver packages (with the ImageScan! package, in particular, you MUST install the ImageScan 'data' package BEFORE installing the ImageScan package itself; if you attempt to use the bundled all-in-one installer, it refuses to play ball. It wants the data in place before the driver installer runs.....at least, that's always been the case for me.)
Perhaps worth mentioning at this point that the unit in question is a Stylus SX218 - this unit is the immediate ancestor of the business-class WorkForce series. It's quite possible the all-in-one bundles work differently with newer units.

I've found in recent years that newer releases of ImageScan will install, & fire up, but always complain about "running out of memory". Er....hell-O? 32 GB not enough for you? 
I gave up on it in the end, and now scan/copy direct from the unit's onboard control panel. This functions flawlessly.

I don't understand this, According to the SANE project,, the SX218 has always been supported by the built-in epson2 backend.
Even newer Epson models are supported by epson2 just by adding their product:vendor ID codes to the .conf file.
It also looks like the SX218 is supported by the epkowa driver which is still available in the Starter Kit print/scan knowledge base.
