Hi,

I want to use boot splash.
plymouth has dependency conflict with elogind. plymouth works with systemd.

Alternates found sugesting to use plymouth-nosystemd

Could not locate the deb package.

Any other alternative for splash screen?

Thanks.

Alex.

This is working for puppy. Not for newuser created. X server not starting. Remains in console mode.

You need to change /etc/skel.

Strange, works for me, I ran "Add new user" from menu, created user "fred' > Exit X > typed login > logged in as fred and X started.
Also modified /etc/inittab to autologin as "fred' and after reboot it worked ok.
Maybe you did different, also it may depend on the setup, e.g. Desktop choice, what's yours ? And any error message you see ?

EDIT: Re: Splash screen: I have no idea, and don't know anything about plymouth, sorry.

Hi,
Using StretchDog that I used to make BusterDog isos yesterday.
I just tried to use mklive-bullseye (from page 1, dated 2021-05-23 ).
Tried to make bullseye Tint2 (last one on gui selection page). Script ran for a while, input passwords for root and puppy users, configuring keyboard, and then failed. Tried 2 twice.

I think I used mklive-bullseye64 yesterday to make some iso (with gzip) successfully, but thought to re-make them with XZ compression this time. But forgot where I put mklive-bullseye64.

Maybe some repo link is down temporarily. I will try again later.

Meanwhile, I'll try other selection....see if it gives same error...

Edit - just tried minimal iso (first one on GUI). Same error...(full screen output attached).

OK, running 64-bit OS, building live system for 64-bit: x86_64
Create a Debian Bullseye minimal live system similar to 'DebianDog'
With overlay support and porteus-boot style included

It's required to have at least 3 GB free space
and to run this script on a Linux filesystem, e.g. ext4
Building will be done in: /root/Downloads/bullseye
Running with configuration: /tmp/openbox_lx.conf
Build setup info can be found in: /root/Downloads/bullseye/build_setup.txt
If you'd like a log from the output, run again e.g:
./mklive-bullseye -gui 2>&1 | tee mklive-bullseye.log
First setting up debootstrap, this will take a few minutes
After that you will be asked to set the password for 'root'

At the end of the install process you may want to run one or more commands
 (in the chroot)
 If so, Xterm will run and you can type e.g. synaptic, to install more packages
 Or e.g. rox or thunar (filemanager), if installed)
Do you want to run Xterm just before exiting chroot ? (Enter=no) (y/N)?
OK, will not run xterm at the end of install process

Checking network connection...
OK
At the end of the install process the initrd file(s) will be created
The initrd1.xz for porteus-boot will be created anyway, but an initrd for 'live-boot' can be created also (initrd.img)
Do you want to create initrd.img (for live-boot) ? (Enter=no) (y/N)?
OK, will not create initrd.img, only initrd1.xz
At the end an ISO will be created
Type Y or y (or ENTER) if you want an ISO with UEFI support
(ISO size will be larger)
If not, type n
Do you want to create ISO with UEFI support ? (Enter=yes) (Y/n)?
OK, will create ISO with UEFI support

Pls ignore above.
I tried few hours later and it's ok.

My guess, this is related to this error that resolved itself now.

Hi Fred: There has been some discussion in the Puppy section about pupmode=13 not working with overlayfs.

But I ran the Bullseye Starter Kit with EXIT mode and it worked fine. Am I missing something?

The EXIT mode works OK indeed with overlay (not much tested though), it wasn't working OOTB, I've done lots of modifications compared to the previous aufs method.
So should be possible to work with Puppy too, I guess. It should start in the init script (by using overlay) and probably requires a complete rewrite of the /usr/bin/snapmergepuppy script (that takes care of copying the changes at shutdown).

Part of the "finit" script (functions for "init" in the initrd1.xz) (if directory /memory/images/changes-exit exists it will be part of the mounted layers and the EXIT mode will be active (and by running save2flash or snapmergepuppy at shutdown or on demand)

Code: Select all

LOWLIST=""
for x in `cat /tmp/modules`;
do
	NAME=`basename $x`;
	mkdir /memory/images/$NAME;
	mount -o loop $x /memory/images/$NAME 2>/dev/null
	if [ $? -eq 0 ];
	then
		echo "  $m  $NAME";
		LOWLIST=/memory/images/${NAME}:${LOWLIST}
	else
		echo $i"[1;36m""Cannot read $NAME - corrupted module?""[0m";
		rmdir /memory/images/$NAME
	fi
done
if [ -d /memory/images/changes-exit ]
then
	LOWLIST=/memory/images/changes-exit/upperdir:${LOWLIST}
	cp -a /memory/images/changes-exit/workdir/* $WORKDIR/. 2> /dev/null
fi
LOWLIST=`echo $LOWLIST | sed 's/:$//'`

#echo "mount -t overlay -o upperdir=$UPPERDIR,lowerdir=$LOWLIST,workdir=$WORKDIR overlay /union"
mount -t overlay -o upperdir=$UPPERDIR,lowerdir=$LOWLIST,workdir=$WORKDIR overlay /union

AFAIK, official Porteus releases are still using aufs, but there were some experiments with overlayfs that I saw in the Porteus forum, and I took big parts of the code and setup from there, but can't remember from who btw.

Thanks.

BTW, I consider the two recent developments - overlayfs and the smaller initrd - to be complete successes.

So, does the "My Squash Loader 2.1" implement the overlay way of doing things just for squash files loaded on the fly?

Or did installing it on my Stretch installation do something else?

My Squash Loader is a front-end for the loadmodule tool. The original loadmodule was based on aufs. But when Fred switched to overlayfs, he re-wrote it to use symlinking.

My Squash Loader v2.1 has its own version of loadmodule. It also uses symlinking, but a variation of the technique.

If you look in /usr/local/bin, you should see the original loadmodule renamed as loadmodule.000. If you prefer to use the original version, you can switch it back.

Hi Fred: Master PDF Editor v4 in your Bullseye repo is broken now that Bullseye has migrated to QT5.

Luckily, I have v4 packaged as a squashfs module from Buster that still works in Bullseye.

Ah, thanks, I will remove it from repo soon then.

Hello Luke2021,

Mmm... cannot reproduce the error you got about keyboard-configuration and libgtk3-nocsd.
I assume you ran from Puppy the appimage (mklive-bullseye64), pls tell me if you did different.
Anyway I tested on FossaPup running the appimage and all went fine.
Perhaps it's a temporary failure, so I'd suggest that you try running it again.

yes appimage (mklive-bullseye64) in FussaPup64 from USB pendrive live.
the chose keyboard popup 3 times, the last one exit with error.

is there any idea ? maybe change FussaPup for something else or use another script ?

Yes, trying from another Puppy might work (maybe my FossaPup is different version, so possibly that's why it could work ok for me).
Also, note that the timezone and date must be correctly set, I've found that the build will fail if not.

I don't understand that, you saw 3 times after each other the keyboard-configuration dialog ?
You did press "Enter" after choice made ?
EDIT: The build must be done on a Linux filesystem, e.g. ext3, did you do that ? (and with enough free space ?)

If exactly the same dialogs popup 3 times then there's something very wrong, no idea, never seen that.

Try to find out what filesystem type your USB is, if it's other than a Linux filesystem (e.g. FAT) then it's NOT going to work as it should.
With gparted you can make a ext3 or ext4 filesystem somewhere, from there you can run the build.

,
The USB is FAT32 but the save file ext4.

Ah, ok, then problem could be not enough free space, needs at least 3gb (your savefile only 1gb as I understood).

Ok, now I've tried similar as you did, running ./mklive-bullseye64 from /root, in FossaPup with a 4gb savefile. (first time I did such a way, normally I build from a separate ext4 partition and works well)
I didn't get the error you got, but things went wrong at nearly the end of the build, don't know why, in theory it should work, but obviously it doesn't work building inside a savefile.
So my conclusion is that this way of building the system should be done on an actual filesystem (separate partition, e.g. ext3 or ext4 formatted), NOT from /root (or other location) in the Puppy "virtual" filesystem. I wish I could explain why with the details, but cannot, sorry.
EDIT: See next post, above seems not correct.

Hmm.. turned out that the first time I tried, FossaPup (v9.0.3) was in pupmode=13, which means that the changes are in RAM (and saved at shutdown or on demand) but I have only 2GB RAM so ran out of disk space at the end.
Now I rebooted (with another pupmode) and checked first that there's enough space in / (with my 4gb savefile it should be enough)

Code: Select all

root# df -h
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
....
unionfs         3,9G   87M  3,8G   3% /
....

So should be OK according to "df", ran the build from /root and all went well for me....

@Luke2021

Finally, I think, found what's the problem. I normally press "Enter" after making the keyboard layout choice (with up/down arrow keys).
Now I tried clicking Ok in the dialog with the mouse pointer (I guess you did that, right?) and got the same problem, indeed the dialog comes back 2 more times and finally the build fails.
So..., don't know real solution (that clicking Ok works) , but anyway I guess it should work fine for you when you press 'Enter' after making keyboard layout choice.

Btw, when I run the build from DebianDog, there's no problem, when clicking Ok with the mouse.
(the problem may have to do with a possibly incomplete gtk3 install in FossaPup, but that's just a guess).
Anyway, sorry for the inconvenience and thanks for reporting!
