I'm still trying, but it's very hard to do for the first time ever from scratch.
If @peebee could send me some of the mean Woof-CE files related what needs to be edited/modified to me to have a look at, this would surely be of a lot of help.

There is an older Hungarian build of HirsuitePup64 from Dec 2020.

I have seen the work of that author, last year. But, so far on the forum, he is not here to address arising issues. Am I wrong?

The author of the Hungarian version seems to build and release many different builds. I've been trying various builds of his, and some of them are very good and others not so much. I don't speak or read Hungarian, so if I have an issue I've had to research it.

Similar experience, @dasouth .

Like @peebee's builds, his builds also boot via SG2D which leads me to believe he may also be using WoofCE for his 64bit PUPs he presents that I have tested. I merely download his ISOs, boot them, and everything is consistent with PUPs.

Oh well. Will wait for a supportive 64bit version.

@peebee,
Thanks for this Puppy.
As a recent release it contains recent woof-ce changes like "SAVESPEC" and "AUTOSAVE".

It's also available for uefi capable machines, as 'UPupHH+D-21.04+0.zip' (285MB) on https://www.mediafire.com/folder/eto6n8 ... ziprelease.

Of the Ubuntu/Debian builds I have used this one is best in my opinion anyway built a retro version for really old hardware that can't handle series kernels so this one uses kernel 3.14.56.....

I'm still using Tahr-era XFCE, either X-puplet or my homecraft ppm version.

Anyone know how memory usage compares?

When I'm running a frugal "UPupHH+D-21.04+3" and execute a "modprobe" console command, I get this message

Code: Select all

libkmod: ERROR ../libkmod/libkmod-config.c:657 kmod_config_parse: /etc/modprobe.d/cdrecord.conf line 1: ignoring bad line starting with 'sg'

However it seems that "modprobe" still works, it's just that the message is a bit annoying.
If I comment out "/etc/modprobe.d/cdrecord.conf line 1" the message no longer appears.
Since that's the only line in '/etc/modprobe.d/cdrecord.conf', I wonder what the file is supposed to achieve.

Oh, I suspect that this issue is older than "21.04+3".

Hi @gyrog
That file comes from a common32 pet:

:cdrtools:|pet|Packages-puppy-common32-official|cdrtools-3.02a09-i686_common32|cdrtools|3.02a09-i686_common32||BuildingBlock|3520||cdrtools-3.02a09-i686_common32.pet||Original cdrtools supporting CD, DVD and BluRay burning|slackware|14.0||

cdrtools-3.02a09-i686_common32.pet 2019-Aug-20 02:14:46 569.9K

https://github.com/puppylinux-woof-CE/p ... s.petbuild at line #82

has:

Code: Select all

  # autoload 'sg' module needed by cdrecord
  install -d -m755 "$pkgdir"/etc/modprobe.d/
  echo sg > "$pkgdir"/etc/modprobe.d/cdrecord.conf

[later] sg.ko is in the zdrv............

UPupFF+D also displays the warning message but BionicPup32 (older cdrtools pet) and ScPup32 (Slackware cdrtools) do not [both do not have /etc/modprobe.d/cdrecord.conf]

Probably nobody has tried to record a cd for some long time ............

Changing the line to:

Code: Select all

install sg /sbin/modprobe --ignore-install sg

copied from examples in /etc/modprobe.d/puppy.conf

gets rid of the error and still results in sg being installed ..... but is it correct??

@peebee,
I'm testing with the command:

Code: Select all

modprobe overlay; echo "$?"

I tried with the line:

Code: Select all

install sg /bin/true

no error message, and '0' result code.

I tried with the line:

Code: Select all

install sg

got error message, but '0' result code.

Sorry, I've no idea what it should be.

@peebee,
FYI.

line 68 of the 'cdrtools.petbuild' file committed to woof-ce by "wdlkmpx" on 20 Feb 2018:

Code: Select all

  echo sg > "$pkgdir"/etc/modprobe.d/cdrecord.conf

I updated to 'UPupHH+D-21.04+4.iso'.
No issues with 'modprobe'.

In 'UPupHH+D-21.04+4.iso'
the file
/etc/modprobe.d/cdrecord.conf
has been deleted
in a similar way to the FossaPup64 build

The scsi driver sg.ko is loaded so there should be no issues with cdrecord
but please report any issues seen.....

@peebee @gyrog
Hmmm sounds well known to me.
A couple of days before, mikewalsh and me were searching for the reason of the same problem.
In this case nero-4 burning application did not detect the drives.
Loading of kernelmodule sg did not solve the problem.
When I tried to unload the kernelmodule sg I got an error message unloading not possible.
This bug was reproduce able every time.
After that I compiled kmod from source.
Now loading and unloading worked without problems.
When I loaded the sg module I got the message invalid module.
So I guess it's kernel related.
Mike clanged the kernel and nero worked without problems.

test distro: Xenialpup64
affected kernel: k4.9.58

Nothing can be done other than to replace Light (lightweight) with your favourite heavyweight browser....

Menu -> Notes:

2. adrv web-browser
The web-browser supplied in the adrv is "lightweight" and should be replaced or augmented by a "heavyweight" browser in many scenarios. There is a menu item "Get Web Browser" under Internet that can be used to download a selection of suitable "heavyweight" browsers once internet access has been established.

For anyone interested, there is an ungoogled chromium package for 32-bit that runs on HH-3, its built for slackware by alienbob and uses no google and does not use the slackware api key.

There was some discussion about whether alienbob had any issues about people borrowing this package and he has since removed his google api key and given implied consent for others to use this (uses no slackware resources now). It is an open source package.

Latest versions are available here

It will run from root using the --no-sandbox switch, example u̶n̶g̶o̶o̶g̶l̶e̶d̶-̶c̶h̶r̶o̶m̶i̶u̶m̶ ̶-̶-̶n̶o̶-̶s̶a̶n̶d̶b̶o̶x̶ chromium-ungoogled --no-sandbox
Should also run from limited user "Spot" without that switch?

Edit: Fixed the switch syntax - thanks greengeek. Also seems to run on older 32-bit pups, I had not tried that. :shock:

Many thanks for the link. The browser works great on Tahr32
Just one thing - the syntax is incorrect - needs to be as follows:

chromium-ungoogled --no-sandbox

Cheers!
