Any consideration for a Gentoo-based Pup?

Post by r96chase »

So, I had this idea after looking at a post on the RPi forum not too long ago and now I figured why not a Gentoo-based Raspup? In fact, why stop there when we can also have a Gentoo-based Pup in general. Might take work and effort though I know.

This hyperlink is to the original RPi forum post btw.

Otherwise, I still hope for an update on the orginal Raspbian-based Raspup though. Just thought I'd provide an idea. :D

I am a crash-course Linux novice. :lol:

@r96chase :-

Umm.....ever looked at the Gentoo website? Read any of the documentation?

As I understand it, the approach is somewhat similar to that of Slackware with their "Slackbuilds" - a return to the early days of Linux, where everything has to be compiled from scratch (although assisted by build 'recipes') on the machine that's going to be using it, so as to be 'optimised' for your hardware. And for much software, that will also mean compiling each & every one of the dependencies your app/program will need to function.....along with any sub- and sub-sub-dependencies that THEY might require.

Not such a problem for a reasonably powerful desktop machine/laptop, powered by x86 processors. I wouldn't like to say how well an ARM-based box, such as a Pi, would handle this kind of task....?

The point being that the whole concept of this type of distro tends to negate the idea of one person "building" it, then putting it up for everybody else to download. That's NOT the way it's intended to work.....the whole idea is that you build your OWN distro from the ground up. Like LinuxFromScratch, which is, I believe, what Kirk & jamesbond have been using to construct parts of FatDog for a while now.

Just my two-penn'orth, like. But you're absolutely right about one thing; it WILL mean plenty of work. A LOT of it...!!

It is possible to make Puppy variants based on the entire DistroWatch list. There are only two small "BUTs" :) But why is this necessary? But who's going to do it?

Fossapup OS, Ryzen 5 3600 CPU, 64 GB RAM, GeForce GTX 1050 Ti 4 GB, Sound Blaster Audigy Rx with amplifier + Yamaha speakers for loud sound, USB Sound Blaster X-Fi Surround 5.1 Pro V3 + headphones for quiet sound.

@mikewalsh I'll be honest, I have not looked at Gentoo's website. My apologies. I kinda got caught up in the ideasphere and probably got overhyped and stuff. Again, I do apologize.

Absolutely nothing to apologise for, dear boy. I just didn't know if you were aware of quite what's involved with Gentoo; by & large, it tends to appeal more to people who like to be in full control of absolutely every aspect of their computing experience. And usually their lives, too..... :D
