Bionic Pup for Netbook with BIOS (no UEFI) and Atom 1.6GHz CPU

Post by Amadeus »

Hi to all Forum members!

Please it would be great if one of the forum members could help me out here.

I am new in Puppy Linux (usually I am on openSUSE + KDE).

I found an old HP/Compaq notebook in perect condition (Ms Windows XP is installed).
I would like to install Puppy Linux + a lightweight desktop, a browser (Firefox?), Libre Office (only writer and calc) and a leightweight email client.
That's all needed.

The ISO I downloaded = bionicpup32-8.0-uefi.iso

I am puzzled because the filename of this ISO contains the word UEFI
I am wondering will the affore mentioned ISO install on the HP/Compag Netbook with only Legacy BIOS and without UEFI?
Or do I need a different version (ISO) of Puppy Linux?

Please can someone here on the forum help me out here?

I would like to install Puppy Linux on that HP/Compaq netbook with Intel Atom CPU on 1.6GHz an 1GB RAM (I have a 2GB soDIMM that I want to use in this Netbook). The HDD is a 7200rpm Toshiba (if I like the Puppy Linux Install I will replace the HDD with a SATA III SSD). Currently the fore mentioned netbook has the original Ms Windows XP installed, it speaks for itself that I want to get rid of the XP installation.

I would like to know which is the best ISO to download & install on the fore mentioned netbook and maybe a forum member also can give me some insight abut the possibility to install LibreOffice (only writer & calc). All tips & tricks are welcome.

THANKS!!!!!

Yes it will! Should work perfectly with Legacy BIOS. Forum member mikewalsh has also found ways to add LibreOffice components without the entire package I believe and may chime in to give much more detailed information on this.

I think you will find Bionic32 very useful.

When you install Puppy.
Do a frugal install.
Some features of Puppy, only work, on frugal installs.
It is a complete install of the OS, but in a special way.

As small as Puppy is, with most of Puppy loaded into RAM (as a frugal install), a SSD drive is not going to be that much different except for starting very big programs.
Except for the browser, in most Puppy versions.
A big program would have to be something you added to Puppy.
Example:
The complete LebreOffice suit of programs, will take 5 to 10 sec. to start, but runs fast for me, after the different programs get loaded.
Speed of the RAM, CPU, and read of the drive is a big factor.

Some general info:
All versions of Puppy (UEFI or non-uefi), will install and work, on the old legacy bios.

For UEFI computers, the Puppy version, needs to have additional files, for UEFI booting.
So, Puppy versions with uefi in their names will for sure work on UEFI computers.

If the UEFI bios settings are changed to disable secure boot and or enable legacy boot.
It will basically work like the old legacy bios.
With these settings, good chance any Puppy version will boot.

Keep in mind, some boot problems, are the Puppy version, not having the hardware support, for the computers hardware.
This is more, trying to use too old a version of Puppy, on too new a computer.

The things you do not tell us, are usually the clue to fixing the problem.
When I was a kid, I wanted to be older.
This is not what I expected :o

Luxury!

On an Asus EEEPC-701, Libre-Office can take as long as it takes me to go get a cup of coffee to get started. Once going, however, it is fast enough to use.

Seamonkey takes about 5-10 seconds but will once started, open youtube and play a video etc.

I rate that as "not bad for an under 1GHz machine"

The puppy involved is largely 528 for this test.
