(Ubuntu minimal "live")

Updated 2020-11-15, some bugfixes.
Updated 2020-09-19, some bugfixes. Added to Dog Linux website now: FossaDog
Updated 2020-09-07 FossaDog-2020-09-07_64-bit-UEFI.iso, now with UEFI support (for testing) thanks @jamesbond and @Clarity !
Download links replaced Here

Changes and Fixes

FossaDog is a fork of "DebianDog" with the difference that it's Ubuntu based.
See also for Debiandog history: https://debiandog.github.io/doglinux/zz07about.html
DebianDog full credits: https://github.com/DebianDog/Wheezy/blo ... Credits.md

Full access to Ubuntu repositories by using apt-get (from terminal) or from Synaptic Package Manager (GUI)

Fossadog repository: https://debiandog.github.io/FossaDog/Packages-amd64/

Login details:
root with password root
puppy with password puppy

Specifications: Updated 2020-11-15
Built completely from scratch by using debootstrap (previously was upgrade from BionicDog)
Size became rather large (567MB) this is mostly because of the firmware (lots included) and many kernel modules.
Kernel: 5.4.0-53-generic
Boot Method: porteus-boot , see examples; https://github.com/DebianDog/FossaDog/r ... -codes.txt
Default WM - OpenBox
(with different choice of Desktop modes: tint2 icon-panel, cairo-dock or rox-pinboard icons, to choose, run 'Desktop Manager' from Menu)
Tint2 bottom panel or cairo-dock.
Default File Manager - pcmanfm with option to use rox.
Default Internet Browser - Firefox Quantum latest version (running by default with apulse to enable sound).
Menu provided by Obmenu-generator (perl script)

Note: to show the drive icons in pcmanfm (by use of "pup-volume-monitor"), a workaround is made, script /usr/local/bin/pcmanfm points to /usr/bin/pcmanfm and (required) gio libs in /usr/local/gio
EDIT: Fixed 2020-11-15, now without this "ugly" workaround.

Full LZ4 squashfs support (compression and loading modules)

Systemd is enabled by default.

Changes and fixes done for FossaDog-2020-08-15_64-bit.iso :
- Changed names to Fossadog (that previously were Bionicdog), e.g. for isolinux entries in ISO and the installer.
- Repo specially for Fossadog now in /etc/apt/sources.list https://debiandog.github.io/FossaDog/Packages-amd64/
- Fixed/updated some applications to work correctly in Fossadog.
- Added some more applications, e.g. camphonetab, run-as-user (similar to run-as-spot)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Changes and fixes done for FossaDog-2020-08-19_64-bit.iso :
- Built completely from scratch now by using debootstrap (previously was upgrade from BionicDog)
- Removed the pcmanfm workaround to make drive icons show using pup-volume-monitor.
(see here viewtopic.php?p=2707#p2707 and further)
Instead now using gvfs to show drive icons
- Fixed that at shutdown/reboot some mounts failed to unmount (red "failed" messages should be gone now)
- Added some more applications, added xlock to logout options.

Changes and fixes done for FossaDog-2020-09-07_64-bit-UEFI.iso :
- Added UEFI support
- The kernel is upgraded to v5.4.0-45 and is a separate .squashfs module now
- Added to Menu > System > Upgrade kernel that can create separate .squashfs, initrd1.xz and vmlinuz
- The menu entry for google-chrome did not work because the repo list for google-chrome does not eingxist, fix by running from terminal:

Code: Select all

echo "deb [arch=amd64] http://dl.google.com/linux/chrome/deb/ stable main" > /etc/apt/sources.list.d/google-chrome.list
# Add trusted key:
wget -q -O - https://dl.google.com/linux/linux_signing_key.pub | apt-key add -

- The "Compress" option (right-click) in pcmanfm didn't work, fixed by changing --add-to to --compress in /usr/share/libfm/archivers.list (under xarchiver)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Changes and fixes done for FossaDog-2020-09-19_64-bit-UEFI.iso:
- Kernel upgraded to v5.4.0-47
- Symlink "awk missing in /usr/local/sbin, needed for some startup applications, e.g. firewall, LXinput, fixed by:

Code: Select all

ln -s /bin/busybox /usr/local/sbin/awk

- Fixed some missing icons in the Menu
- Upgraded all packages (apt upgrade)
- Some more small fixes done
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Changes and fixes done for FossaDog-2020-11-15_64-bit-UEFI.iso, some bugfixes :
- Kernel upgraded to v5.4.0-53
- Changed how to make the drive icons show in pcmanfm file manager

at first post wrote:

Fixed now by modifying pup-volume-monitor package, no "ugly" workaround anymore.
- Upgraded all packages (apt upgrade)
- Included different /etc/mke2fs.conf , formatted to ext4 filesystem is supported booting from grub4dos, see also issue here:

Included in the ISO is a setup script (+dependencies) "weeinst" to easy install the grub4dos bootloader, see also here (similar):
viewtopic.php?f=46&t=464

Extract, or mount the ISO and copy the contents to HDD or USB and run:

Code: Select all

./weeinst
from terminal on the drive you want to install grub4dos (e.g. from /mnt/sda1 or /mnt/sdb1)

Oooops......., made a bad mistake  , by leaving /clear-changes-at-reboot, which results in unexpected clearing save storage at reboot
Fixed and re-uploaded the ISO, also included now the "easy grub4dos install" files, which I forgot earlier, where are my brains....

Hi Fred,
I type this from FossaDog-2020-08-15_64-bit.iso.
I can not open .pdf file. I try to apt remove evince, then I do 'apt install evince', but still not open my pdf.
thank you.

Hi recobayu,

Yes indeed doesn't work, I added new evince package version 1:2.32.0-2 to the repo, it should work ok from what I tested.

Code: Select all

apt update
apt install evince

I did a manual frugal install of this on my hp 2540p laptop.

Booted fine. Wifi config was fine after a few tries.

Firefox wouldn't start and gave me this error in the terminal.
root@live64:~# firefox
XPCOMGlueLoad error for file /opt/firefox/libmozgtk.so:
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libgtk-3.so.0: undefined symbol: g_mount_operation_set_is_tcrypt_hidden_volume
Couldn't load XPCOM.
root@live64:~#
Let me know if there is more info that you need.

Dan

edit: I get the same error when I try to launch my firefox portable and my vivaldi portable.

edit again: used md5sum to check the download and it was fine, so that's not it.

Re: FossaDog (Ubuntu 20.04 'Focal Fossa' LTS) 64-bit Alpha (updated 2020-08-15)

Post by fredx181 »

Hi Dan,

I could reproduce only half, from tint2 panels Desktop, firefox runs ok for me.
But running portable firefox I got the same error you got, but runs ok when using full path e.g. from root terminal:

Code: Select all

root@live64:~# '/mnt/sda7/ffox/firefox_79.0_64/ff'
Not when running ./ff from firefox_79.0_64 directory.
So, a bit mysterious, but... I think, after some digging and a bit of luck, I found that the reason for this is because of the workaround I made for pcmanfm to show drive icons, renaming script pcmanfm /usr/local/bin/ to pcmanfm.bak solved it for me (but then no drive icons will show in pcmanfm), workaround wrote at first post:
Note: to show the drive icons in pcmanfm (by use of "pup-volume-monitor"), a workaround is made, script /usr/local/bin/pcmanfm points to /usr/bin/pcmanfm and (required) gio libs in /usr/local/gio
Can you test if renaming to pcmanfm.bak solves it for you ? After that restart X, and see if firefox and portable firefox/vivaldi runs ok.

Okay, the first thing I did was change the desktop from pcmanfm/lxpanel to tint2, Local firefox worked, but portable didn't.

Then I went back to pcmanfm/lxpanel, confirmed local firefox didn't work, then renamed /usr/local/bin/pcmanfm, restarted x, and tried again. Local firefox and portable firefox both worked.

Let me know if there is anything else you'd like me to check.

No urgency from me for any of this, I was testing for the sake of testing.

Yes, that's what I expected, but now I know for sure.
The pcmanfm workaround is bad, I don't know how to make pup-volume-monitor work properly now, so probably will switch to gvfs in next release to show drive icons in pcmanfm.
Thanks for testing.

The menu entry for google-chrome does not work because the repo list for google-chrome does not exist, fix by running from terminal:

Code: Select all

echo "deb [arch=amd64] http://dl.google.com/linux/chrome/deb/ stable main" > /etc/apt/sources.list.d/google-chrome.list
# Add trusted key:

Seems to be working fine, nothing too criminal. At least for my basic needs as I use it heavily modified anyway.
'Create squashfs' is missing from the right click menu in the pcmanfm.
'Compress' option in the same right click menu doesn't do anything, if it supposed to do anything (I just usually install file-roller and it pops up from this option). Probably something needs to be set up from the pcmanfm preferences.
'Upgrade Kernel' is not present (at least yet).
'xserver-xorg-video-amdgpu' is not installed but gpu worked anyway, presumably on radeon driver, so probably not needed. 'Amdgpu' driver is for modern and even not very modern amd cards, 'radeon' is for old cards and 'ati' is probably for something very old. My amd video for reference (after installing amdgpu bits)

Code: Select all

AMD Raven Ridge [Radeon Vega Series / Radeon Vega Mobile Series] driver: amdgpu
Looking forward towards final release :)

Thanks for testing Flying Cat!
Yes, the compress option doesn't work with xarchiver, see fix here:
https://www.raspberrypi.org/forums/view ... 4#p1511454
Upgrade-kernel needs a bit of work to do.

Thanks fred,

For another sexy release. Installed on my cantankerous HP dv6000 and so far is working well.

Sound and video working well, connected to internet with no problems. Didn't use weeinst script - installed manually.

Many thanks Fred.

Hi Fred !
Quick Remaster does not work for me ......no Progress....
"Sorry cannot continue with the remaster.Canceled,or not enough Disk-space ?
Restoring Backup and exiting..."

Anybody else having this Problem......or just me?
Otherwise i`m a happy Camper with the ..Buntu-Dogs.

(probably repeating myself)......."Best Thing since sliced Bread"
So far everything else seems working fine ...........use it now as my daily Driver.

Thanks a lot Fred for all your hard Effort......

Hi backi, thanks for testing!

Quick remaster works OK for me, can you give some more details about your setup ?, (e.g. booting from USB or HDD, kernel boot command or anything/something special about it , so I can possibly try to reproduce).
You did have enough space on the boot partition ?
Was there no progress bar at all, or did it stop at some point?
What is your boot partition (mountpoint e.g. /mnt/sdb1 or ....), check with:

Code: Select all

readlink -f /mnt/home

Hi Fred!
There is nothing wrong with the Quick-Remaster.
Reason for that Bug was .....i did install E23 Enlightenment-Desktop.

Seems i found a Solution....
Solution ......i switched back into to Openbox-Session for performing quick-remaster ...so it worked without any Problems......

After Quick-Remaster and Reboot (into E23-Enlightenment Desktop)....even in Enlightenment Desktop i am now able to perform the Quick-Remaster.
Only flaw ....Progress-Bar is not working in Enlightenment Desktop Environment...but Remaster is performed correctly.
So I regard this Problem as solved.

Thanks Fred... for Reply !

Ah... good to know.

Well except that it doesn't work correctly on E23, do you have any idea how come that the progress doesn't show ?

Btw, you don't have the (over)heat problem that you had with Buster ?

Hi Fred !
Regarding why Quick-Remaster in E23 Enlightenment Environment... Progressbar does not show any Progress----- (Progress-Bar is shown but does not react....) but further Notifications "01-filesystem created".... and so on ....are working .
Have absolutely no Idea Fred.
But it does not really bother me as long it works .Just a cosmetic Issue .

Overheating Problems don't occur.
System/Machine is running very cool, fast and smooth....light as a Feather.

This Overheating Problems seems to be not "Buster" specific .... Bionicpup64 8.0 CE
also causing Heat Problems on my Machine.

Regards !

FossaDog update with UEFI support

Post by fredx181 »

Updated FossaDog, FossaDog-2020-09-07_64-bit-UEFI.iso

Now with UEFI support, many thanks to @jamesbond, for guiding me kindly how to do it and also thanks to @Clarity for the support .

I'd appreciate if anyone with an UEFI system can test.
Specially a manual install by copying files to USB, see in ISO "ReadMe-UEFI".
I can't really test myself, because my hardware doesn't support it, although I did test with qemu virtualization UEFI boot and seems to work fine.

Other major change is that the kernel is now a separate .squashfs, see more at Changes and Fixes

Download, see Here

I'll get to testing UEFI in the morning, but until then, a few small problems I have noticed in an otherwise amazing distro.

1.) The firewall status icon doesn't start because the script is looking for awk in /usr/local/sbin rather than /usr/bin(I think is where it is, not at the computer right now. Fixed temporarily with a symlink.

2.) The web browser icon in the top tint2 'dock' doesn't seem to run with apulse, though the ones in the menu did, as do the ones on the rox desktop, pcmanfm desktop, etc. I didn't look at the time, but maybe related to it calling x-www-browser or something rather than FF directly?

3.) One of the memory conky objects has 'MiiB' as a unit instead of 'MiB', with the extra eye being hardtyped into the config and easily removed. Purely cosmetic, but while I am at it lol.

Please don't take this as nitpicky, those are honestly the only problems I have really had, even with FossaDog in alpha.

Indeed forgot about the tint2 browser icon to make it run with apulse and will look at the firewall/awk issue.

UEFI boot works OK! Flash drive was marked as UEFI in bios. Boots fine. But somewhat slower (maybe it's due to fat32 or flash drive is not very good, can't do extensive tests now) than normal (legacy) boot.
The only problem is that UEFI boot requires fat32 and weeinst doesn't work from fat32 xD Good thing I used already bootable fat32 drive. And only option for saving on fat32 is to the savefile 'changes.dat'

Hi Fred,
Well I've tried the other Dogs so I thought I'd try this one. However, my record on getting them to work with a save folder rather than save file is abysmal. I only managed to do this once and that was with a lot of help. In keeping with this record I've failed again. Here is the setup I'm using. I have a 40GB 2.5 inch ide HDD which came from an old laptop. It's plugged into an adapter which allows it to be used as a USB drive. It has two partitions. sda1, formatted ntsf at just over 9 GB and sda2, formatted ext3 at about 28GB. I have both buster dog and racy551 on sda1. I did not manage to create a save folder for buster dog, though I did try, so sda2 has nothing on it. Buster dog has a save file on sda1. I did a manual frugal install of fossa dog on sda1. I'm using grub4dos to boot both buster dog and racy so it was relatively easy to boot fossa dog. All I did after booting was to set up the wifi then I shutdown. As part of the shutdown process I was give the option of creating a save file or a save folder. I chose save folder. This is where things start to become confusing. I was asked to choose a folder in which the save folder called "changes" would be placed. I migrated to sda2 and chose "create folder". I named my folder f-dog-sf. I was told that this folder could not be used as it was not on a linux partition even although sda2 is a linux partition. I repeated this but this time did not choose a folder. This time the "changes" folder was accepted and written to sda2 and was used to save the changes. Now we come to the next problem that of the "cheat code" I looked at "Examples-boot-codes.txt". Below is the one I considered most relevant to me.

"Recommended to put the casper folder in a folder with unique name, e.g. Fossa_Dog, then use this:"

Code: Select all

title FossaDog in folder Fossa_Dog, save on exit (sda1)
root (hd0,0)
kernel /Fossa_Dog/casper/vmlinuz noauto from=/Fossa_Dog changes=EXIT:/Fossa_Dog/casper/
initrd /Fossa_Dog/casper/initrd1.xz
I found this a little confusing as the changes folder appears to be called casper when the routine to set up a changes folder only allows the name "changes" as well as the fact that the folder containing vmlinuz, initrd1.xz and the .sfs file is also called casper. Below is the boot code I've used.

Code: Select all

title FossaDog (sda1/7920fossadog)
root (hd0,0)
kernel /7920fossadog/casper/vmlinuz noauto from=/7920fossadog changes=EXIT:/sda2/changes
initrd /7920fossadog/casper/initrd1.xz
I have also tried many variations of this including =EXIT:/mnt/sda2/changes and =EXIT:/changes and others I can't remember. Some times when it fails the report seems to suggest that sda2 cannot be found. I'm now wondering if I am not alone in having problems in finding a "cheat code" that will let me boot using my save folder.
Can you suggest how I can get fossa dog to use the save folder that was created using the fossa dog shutdown routine or if not is there a way to make a save folder that can be got to work.

Regards,

Ken.
