Re: The murga-linux forum seems to be back up!!
The person that payed for it is no longer. (died)
To keep the forum active, still is being payed by someone.
whoever was payed to provide the forum, is being nice enough to let people still access it, to get stuff off of it.
But, that is not going to be forever.
GET WHAT YOU WANT AND STOP GOING TO THE MURGA FORUM.
This is now the official Puppy Linux forum!!
We all, just hope, rockedge is willing to pay for it, and provide the needed bandwidth and storage.
The things you do not tell us, are usually the clue to fixing the problem.
When I was a kid, I wanted to be older.
This is not what I expected

Re: The murga-linux forum seems to be back up!!
I have enabled logins to you can retrieve PM. It also has links to this forum as requested.
You don't need logins to view anything, though, I have also made the "off-topic" area open to everyone.
---
As Mick already said earlier, please do not crawl or spider or mirror the forum.
Feel free to use it, browse it, google it, whatever you want to do but please do not flood it with automated crawling request.
There is no need for that anyway, the forum is now backed-up properly and it will be kept online for as long as we can.
Enjoy.

Re: The murga-linux forum seems to be back up!!
Should this forum have an annual fund raiser to get monies to support this site as well as BarryK's site?
As this BB continues to improve, we could set an annual anniversary date to fund site renewal costs so that no member is burdened with the cost to support this world-wide effort of peoples from all nations.
FYI
P.S. @rockedge and @jamesbond and @01micko and @BarryK and all the distro contributers...THANKS. Love what you given!
Re: The murga-linux forum seems to be back up!!
this forum should have a donate button on the top
so that people can give what they want when they want
rockedge jamesbond barry k 0micko etc can decide how to distribute it
it should help (at least a little) with the cost
and help keep this forum running long term
and that is of benefit to everyone in the puppy community

Yes, one could search the forum without being registered and/or logged in.nic007 wrote: Tue Aug 11, 2020 6:28 pm Was it possible to do a search on the old forum without being logged in, can't remember? Anyways, you can now.

I'm not sure how much of the 'hidden' subforums (like Spam Reports and the previously-hidden Off-Topic area) were indexed by the search engines, though. Flash, do you know if the search engine bot 'users' had full access to those subforums?taersh wrote: Wed Aug 12, 2020 5:09 pm Yes, one could search the forum without being registered and/or logged in.

Re: The murga-linux forum seems to be back up!!
Personally, I will definitely be happy to make the odd contribution here & there, but.....it must be done in such a way as to be a voluntary act. We don't want to turn the Forum into "pay-per-access", and make members think they have no choice BUT to cough up.tosim wrote: Wed Aug 12, 2020 1:39 pm We users of this forum SHOULD contribute so that no one or two persons have to pay it all. I hope they setup a PayPal, or some kind of account to which we can contribute.
As long as it remains a purely voluntary action, you might be surprised at the increase in numbers of folks that will consider it to be a worthwhile thing to do.....

http://puppylinux.us/psearch.html
In the web source drop down select Puppy forum.
Also has some other Puppy locations to choose.
Along with www for the complete web.

Re: The murga-linux forum seems to be back up!!
purely voluntary
no pressure
don't give money you need to feed the kids
but puppy has been a lot of fun and very useful to me over many years
and i kick in a few bucks now and then for my other hobbies
also remember its purely voluntary for rockedge and jamesbond too
and i would hate to see the forum go away
a discrete donate button on the top should be enough
then everyone can do what they feel like at the moment

Because in my view it would be far easier all round to have everything old and new in one place and merged here if at all possible.Plus in the sad eventuality that the original Murga Forum should be lost or shutdown (as some seem to suggest in here),it would all be backed up here..wanderer wrote: Tue Aug 11, 2020 3:47 am why not have the old forum have a notice and link to the new forum
have the old forum be read only as an archive
and open up new threads on the new forum
for the threads people want to stay active from the old forum
that way no one would have to rearrange and merge everything
the new forum could just slowly pick up the active threads from the old forum
and if one needed more background info on that topic
you could just go to the old related thread on the old forum and read it

Re: The murga-linux forum seems to be back up!!
The problem is the 15 year old murga system would be difficult to merge with this one. A conversion and merger would then completely alter the structure as it is now and introduce a nest of spaghetti of over a million posts and 20 gigs of attachment files. Since the the murga forum and this one reside on completely different servers on very different host services this would entail transfers of large amounts of data. The php that is needed for the murga forum to run is different than it is for this one, to the point one will not run on the other so a side by side conversion is not possible and since these are servers physically different and on different continents there are several challenges that are for our limited budgets just not worth the effort. One very small problem encountered anywhere along the way could mean both forums would end up being non-functional and both would be lost.
It has been decided to keep what has been solid up until now close to as is as possible and create ways of linking the 2 forums in other ways.

Re: The murga-linux forum seems to be back up!!
Whilst I agree with you as to the ease of use as far as members are concerned, I have to concur with Rockedge. Merging the two fora was always going to be dependent on a number of competing issues; if attempting to do so would perhaps result in the total loss of everything we have, then I say NO. Don't even attempt the merge.Tahrbaby wrote: Thu Aug 13, 2020 9:43 amBecause in my view it would be far easier all round to have everything old and new in one place and merged here if at all possible.Plus in the sad eventuality that the original Murga Forum should be lost or shutdown (as some seem to suggest in here),it would all be backed up here..
-----------------------------------------------
Anyway, it's not as though the content will be irretrievably lost in any case. Barry & jamesbond between them have now got secure backups of the old forum's content.
https://forum.puppylinux.com/viewtopic. ... 2592#p2163
...and, for the near future at least, the old forum's hosting is secure, too:-
https://forum.puppylinux.com/viewtopic. ... 2592#p2266
It's not ALL bad..! If the worst comes to the worst, and the old server packs up, I would hazard a guess that it will probably be possible to clone the operating system/software, and re-install the whole thing on newer hardware.
@rockedge :- Would the above suggestion be possible, or not? Yes, server stuff is a little way out of my 'comfort zone', it's true, but you can't help but pick up at least some of the basics over time....

Re: The murga-linux forum seems to be back up!!
experimentation will progress on testing the feasibility of a merger. We have the data now for the murga forum and it could be all upgraded at some point. Although the path now leads to 2 separate systems working together.
I find the custom search at https://rockedge.org/psearch is helpful because it scans both the old and new forums.

Also on the forum page is a link to http://oldforum.puppylinux.com which is the Murga-linux puppy forum. Don't worry, there are no domain changes (as stated in the notice today at the top of the main forum page of this site - see date of this post for the reference to 'today'). All links and bookmarks for both https://puppylinux.rockedge.org and http://murga-linux.com/puppy/ should be preserved!

Re: The murga-linux forum seems to be back up!!
Very, very, old, that is really no use anymore.
A lot of information, that some works now, but some does not.
Puppy has changed over the years.
A merger would just put a lot of outdated unusable stuff on this forum.
Now, if you want to have the old forum, as it now is, available to access for reference, getting some of the still working pet packages, and looking for info in general.
archived!
That could work!
Really, the old murga forum, was in bad need, of a good cleaning out!
Needing a lot of stuff just archived away, so it could still be looked at, but not necessarily used.

Re: The murga-linux forum seems to be back up!!
Bigpup, old friend, just remember one thing.... You & I both know that, yes; there IS an awful lot of archaic & out-of-date information on the Murga-Linux server. That's not in dispute; I mean, how could it be otherwise? There's stuff on there that dates back to the dawn of Puppy's history. And whilst I agree that for most use-cases it's totally non-functional now, you and I both know that you will always have those who delight in digging/sifting-through historical archives. This is, I believe, one reason why the old Forum is best left to its own devices, totally self-contained, as a kind of gigantic, historical "reference library".
After all; who knows what elderly equipment might still be squirrelled-away in lofts/backs of cupboards/garages/storage units. etc., etc., that may still be in perfectly functional condition.....and capable of lasting for a good few years yet? Why deny owners/users of such elderly hardware at least the opportunity to try and make them functional again?
Unless I totally miss my guess, this was always Puppy's "raison d'être".....right from day one.
Mike.

It seems the link in the "Questions?" section on page http://puppylinux.com/index.html needs to be updated to forum.puppylinux.com, otherwise it looks and reads good. And update the footer from 2014-2019 to 2014-2020.

I wonder if that means murga-linux.com domain name will need to be maintained in order to redirect to puppylinux.com forever?
Or should people start fixing their web links to specific pages on the murga forum to a pure puppylinux.com url in anticipation of the eventual expiration of the murga-linux.com domain name?

I've already edited my Murga-Linux bookmark to point to oldforum.puppylinux.com, and it takes me straight there. I'm guessing the redirect has been already set up at the old server's end.....
Mind you, much of this W3 stuff is over my head - always has been - so I could be talking out of my backside. And of course, what Linode specialise in is virtual private servers. Is that what the forum's been running on, all these years?

Not going into specifics the reason I asked is that murga-linux.com still resolves to the linode.com server when I did a traceroute.
I was hoping 01micko could elaborate a bit more for those of us that have hundreds of murga-linux forum links tucked away.
