choosing a debian compatible pup or dog?

I am looking for recommendations for a pup or dog. My primary criteria the ease of use and ability to install third party .debs. I anticipate having to manage, install and track additional dependincies. Apt and Pkg are certianly possibilities. I do not need a gui package manager.

For Dogs I love Jessie Dog and Stretch and Devuandog Beowulf. You can make your own with Build scripts.

Try Dpup Buster by Joseph2424 it has apt.

From memory pkg by Scottman is also there in Dpup Buster. I think Peebee's builds do too.

deb packages can be installed into Puppy by downloading and left clicking on the deb package file.
But you may need to get needed dependency stuff.
I find looking for deb packages that are compiled around the same time the Puppy version was developed, will give best results.
Deb packages for Debian versions of around the same time as the Puppy version.
Some will just work OK.
Others, Puppy will be missing needed dependency stuff.

Check Dependencies Installed Pkg program, that is in most Puppy versions.
This will tell you if anything is missing, that is needed by the deb package program, you installed.

For Puppy versions using Ubuntu based Linux core files and programs.
The Ubuntu version, the Puppy used, will have deb packages that should work.
Same for other Puppies based on other Linux OS.

pkg is in fossapup64, and met my needs. Not saying Dpupbuster wouldnt work as well, but I can run fossapup64 in a container easily, so it got the nod, as my daily driver is Easy Dunfell.
