HP Deskjet F4400 won't print

Post by oldguy_46ca »

I have an HP Deskjet F4480 printer that I know works but I can't get it to print in Wary Puppy 5.5. CUPS finds it and correctly identifies it. I have set it up properly as far as I can tell to use hpcups 3.9.8 but it will not print. I notice that when used on my more modern laptop running Mint it uses hpcups 3.16.9 but that is not available with Puppy 5.5.

I have attached a pdf of my printer configuration file. It is beyond my current level of ability to look at it and recognize any mistakes.

OG, does Wary ship with hpcups 3.9.8 or did you install it from an outside pkg?

It was there after I installed hpliplite from Puppy Package Manager. I wouldn't know where to put it myself.

Good. Because of Pups unique way of running as root, its CUPS system is specialized.

Not that I'm the one capable of explaining the in-and-outs, but, it's good you've kept your setup stock.

There IS a MASTER guru who has stewarded Pups printing system in the past, though he's moved in a new direction.

I'm quite sure he'll see this, and, if he has something to add, you'll surely hear about it.

Hang in there...

Interestingly (to me at least), just to see if it would work I logged in to this forum using my Wary Puppy 5.5 and Firefox 4 installation on my AMD K6-II computer. I could not connect with the https address. But if I deleted the "s" and just used http I could. Everything went well until I tried to reply or logout. Then I got the can't connect error messages. It would be nice if a fully functional Puppy Linux Discussion Forum was still totally usable on my Wary Puppy Linux 5.5 computer. I wrote this on my modern Linux Mint computer.

Anyway, thanks. I await responses from true gurus.

Relax and try not to be too hard on the forum hand-exchange. Teething problems are part of such a roll-over. Trust that Rocky is working hard with the "powers-that-be" to make our previous forums transition as smooth, warm and welcome as possible for Pups dedicated followers.

Something here may help you:
https://developers.hp.com/hp-linux-imag ... g/gethplip
Stuff for Ubuntu or Debian will usually work in Puppy Linux, but not so sure with Wary.

This is providing the latest HPLIP version and it is probably going to need dependency stuff that is not in Wary.
But really do not know until you try it.

Here is the older versions of HPLIP.
https://sourceforge.net/projects/hplip/files/hplip/

Never used any of this stuff.
Maybe it will provide needed info others can help you with.

The things you do not tell us, are usually the clue to fixing the problem.
When I was a kid, I wanted to be older.
This is not what I expected :o

Wary Puppy 5.5 uses HPLIPLITE. HPLIP is quite large in comparison. How do I install it? Where do I put the downloaded file for HPLIP and once installed how does the browser know to use it instead of the lite version when it looks for localhost:631?

I notice there are CUPS folders in several different directories, some with many files in them. It strikes me that one character off in any one of them or one choice toggled the wrong way could be the cause of this. But I don't know how to check.

Re: HP Deskjet F4400 won't print (SOLVED)

I found a post in the archived Puppy forum that had a link to download hpliplite-3.10.5.pet. I installed it, opened CUPS to modify the printer, changed the driver to hpijs 3.10.4.16 and voila, it printed the attached test page. I also tried it with a Libre Office document. It is now the working default printer.

Great follow-up Old Dude. :thumbup2:

Is this the post from where you downloaded your hpliplite-3.10.5.pet?

Did you install "libnetsnmp-15.pet" as well?

Yes that is the same post.

No, I only installed hpliplite-3.10.5.pet and that was enough.
